Since debuting over the summer, Madison Square Garden's Sphere at the Venetian Resort has enthralled visitors to Las Vegas. And after attending U2's inaugural residency that kicked off at the venue last month to rave reviews, UFC president Dana White has revealed big plans to hold an epic fight at the Sphere.
White made the remarks at a post-event news conference for DWCS 66 this week. "I'm obsessed. I'm obsessed," the 54-year-old raved, noting that he's been talking to the people at MSG every day since attending the event over the weekend, and had his secretary schedule another Zoom meeting with them later that day.
However, White seemed nonplussed with rumors that Showtime Championship Boxing might want to hold a boxing event at the Sphere.
"You know, these boxing guys are calling them up going, 'Oh, we want to do a fight over there.’ Those fucking guys," White said. "They’re not going to spend the money to put a fucking show on there. Those guys can’t even do fucking replays for Christ’s sake."
"They think they’re going to fucking put on an event at the Sphere? The Sphere is a whole 'nother level," he continued. "And basically, in my opinion, I don’t run the Sphere and it’s not my company, but it’s so good that for the first—at least year, they should do nothing but incredible experiences. You know, bring in groups that will put on amazing experiences that will just blow peoples' minds."

I'm just gonna tell you right now, I will put on the greatest, live combat sports event anybody has ever seen at The Sphere, in September, for Mexican Independence Day. pic.twitter.com/re4wPgfo9u
White went on, raving about how the designers got everything right, from the visual and seating to audio and hospitality. "I mean, these guys really nailed it... everything that these guys are doing over there is first-class and it's incredible."
"I'm just gonna tell you right now, I will put on the greatest live combat sports event anybody has ever seen at the Sphere in September for Mexican Independence Day," he declared. I fucking guarantee it. I’m so in on this it’s not even funny."
He noted that if the Sphere is "smart," that the UFC should be the first live transmission sports event to take place in the venue, and that September should give them adequate time to prepare.
"Obviously because I want it for Independence Day, right?" he added. "But it’ll take that long for us to really work this thing out and figure it out. Plus, the other thing is, you know I will spend the money to make it right. Boxing is going to fuck around with them on the tickets. They don’t have the money to do it. None of those bums got the money to do it. I’ll do it."
We can only imagine what Dana White and UFC has in mind for the Sphere. The inside of the venue boasts a 160,000-square-foot wraparound screen that stretches high above and around the 18,600-seat audience while projecting images in ultra-crisp 16K. State-of-the-art speakers likewise deliver high-quality audio that allow spectators to actually feel the sound vibrations.
But with 11 months left to plan—provided the project gets the green light—White and company will no doubt deliver something spectacular.
