The disappearance of American college student Natalee Holloway gripped the country—and the rest of the world—in May 2005. After nearly two decades without a concrete answer, her suspected murderer has finally confessed to the crime.
On Oct. 18, Joran van der Sloot of the Netherlands appeared in a federal court in Alabama as part of his trial for extortion and wire fraud in relation to Holloway's disappearance. Prosecutors told the court that van der Sloot had confessed to Holloway's parents that he bludgeoned their daughter to death on the beach in Aruba and put her body in water after she turned down his sexual advances.
Her mother Beth confirmed the confession and took a moment to address him directly in front of the court. "You didn't get what you wanted from Natalee, your sexual satisfaction, so you brutally killed her," she said, lamenting that he "terminated her dreams, her potential, her possibilities."
Van der Sloot was convicted for murdering a Peruvian woman in 2010. Earlier this year, he was extradited to the U.S. to face trial for wire fraud and extortion. He entered a guilty plea in the case, owning up to the fact that he tried to sell information to Holloway's family about the location of their daughter's remains. Beth paid him in a desperate search for answers. While van der Sloot was remorseful for killing her and insisted he'd become a born-again Christian, Beth wasn't having it and told him he'd always be a killer.
Van der Sloot likely won't be facing his sentence related to Holloway's death any time soon. After his trial wraps up here in the States, he'll be extradited back to Peru to complete his sentence in that murder case before coming back to the U.S. to serve whatever sentence he receives in the Holloway case.
