Jason Momoa made a splash back in 2018 as the star of the hit DC Comics movie Aquaman. The Hawai'i native will reprise his role opposite Amber Heard in Warner Brothers' highly anticipated sequel Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, set to hit theaters this holiday season. But the road to release hasn't been simple, according to a new report surfacing allegations about his on-set behavior and the movie's overall work environment.
It all started a few weeks ago when Johnny Depp fans paid the court fees for the release of documents from Depp's trial last year, including notes from Heard's therapist, Dr. Dawn Hughes. The notes were scribbled on a legal pad and contained Heard's detailed description of the work environment on the Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom set, which included claims that Momoa allegedly showed up drunk to set and dressed like Depp.
“Jason said he wanted me fired,” the notes read, per Variety. “Jason drunk—late on set. Dressing like Johnny. Has all the rings too."
Whether he was purposely trying to look like Depp or just had a similar style of dress is not made clear in the notes.
After Heard became embroiled in her high-profile legal case with Depp, everyone around her, including those on the Aquaman set, allegedly weren't allowed to post about the movie or any behind-the-scenes photos with her. This reportedly came to a boiling point with director James Wan.
"He raised his voice @ me," the therapist notes described. "[He said] 'I can’t even post about Aquaman' [and] made it like it was my fault. I said 'I’m sorry.'" Because of the ongoing trial, Heard said, "Nobody could take selfies with me on set given blackout."
Men's Journal has reached out to reps for Jason Momoa, Amber Heard, and James Wan for comment. A DC spokesperson told Variety that allegations of Momoa's on-set behavior couldn't be further from the truth.
"Jason Momoa conducted himself in a professional manner at all times on the set of Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom," the spokesperson said. They echoed a similar sentiment for the work environment led by Wan: "James is known for treating members of his cast and crew with the utmost respect and for fostering a positive, collaborative environment on set—the Aquaman films were no exception."
Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is set to hit theaters Dec. 20.
