Tourists Get Bad News on the Deepest Lake in the United States

If you are planning on taking a trip to Oregon's Crater Lake, you had better get on it soon.

Crater Lake, which is the deepest lake in the United States, will be restricted from tourist access for an extended period of time, Crater Lake National Park announced this week.

The reason for the shutdown is because Cleetwood Cove Trail, the only legal pathway to the shoreline of Crater Lake, will be closed off due to construction starting next year.

“The park is planning on starting construction in 2026,” Crater Lake National Park said in a press release. “Due to the extent work to be completed and short construction seasons, trail closures will be required and are expected during the duration of the 2027 and 2028 summer seasons.

“During this time, no boat tours will be provided and the trail will be closed due to construction and rockfall hazards. If construction goes as planned, the renovated trail will reopen in summer 2029.”

This summer will mark the last time tourists will have access to Crater Lake for two years .

Martha McCabe, the park's public information officer, told SFGate that visitors will only be able to obtain panoramic views of the lake from its elevated rim or via the air. Park scientists will be the only people able to approach the body of the lake.

Crater Lake was formed more than 7,000 years ago when the ancient volcano Mount Mazama erupted and collapsed, leaving the massive depression.

"That crater gradually collected rain and melting snow, filling the 1,943-foot deep basin and creating the deepest lake in the United States," SF Gate wrote. "Its iconic blue waters are pristine — with no inlets from other water sources, the lake water is free of sediment and light scatters freely in its depths, leaving only clear blues."
