Billy McFarland Breaks His Silence on Fyre Fest 2 Controversy

Back in 2017, the infamous Fyre Festival made headlines for all the wrong reasons when what promised to be a high-end festival experience ended in disaster, landing founder Billy McFarland in prison for fraud. Now, he is trying to revive the failed festival and is insistent it's actually going to happen despite skepticism.

McFarland received a six-year federal prison sentence for fraud connected to the original Fyre Festival. After serving under four years, he was released in late March 2022 and has since been organizing Fyre Festival II, now set to take place from Friday, May 30th through Monday, June 2nd, 2025, in Playa Del Carmen, Mexico.

However, there has been considerable doubt about whether or not Fyre Festival 2 will actually happen, particularly after a statement from Mexican officials last week.

Solidarity H. Ayuntamiento City Hall in Playa del Carmen released a statement this week denying that any sort of music festival was scheduled in the area.

"... No such event with that name will take place in our city. There is no existence of a registry nor plans that would indicate such an event taking place in this municipality," the post read, as translated by Today.

Following that statement from the Mexican officials last week, McFarland broke his silence on the controversy with a post on Instagram where he rebuked the "inaccurate" "media reports" about his upcoming fest, claiming that he has been working directly with officials.

“FYRE has been working directly with the government of Playa del Carmen (PDC) and their officials since March 5, 2025 to ensure a safe and successful event,” he wrote in the post online. “All media reports suggesting our team has not been working with the government of PDC are simply inaccurate and based on misinformation.”

“FYRE has operated as a good partner with PDC government and has followed the proper processes and procedures to lawfully host an event, as outlined below," he continued.

McFarland went on to share a timeline of recent interactions he claims that Fyre officials have had with Playa del Carmen officials.

It's worth noting that while tickets are still being sold to the event, with prices ranging from $1,400 to a staggering $1.1 million, there is still no clear itinerary for exactly what will be happening at the festival, and there is still no lineup of artists that will perform. However, the website's lengthy terms and conditions do make it clear that no refunds will be given.
