Leonardo DiCaprio’s resume is so impressive that it speaks for itself. He’s starred in some of the most popular and respected movies over the years and has cemented himself as one of the biggest names in Hollywood.
And yet, the 50-year-old mega star remained incredibly humble while proving that he'll never forget where his career began and what truly helped jump-start it.
In 1993, when DiCaprio was 17 years old and looking to make his big break into the industry, he starred in the movie This Boy's Life alongside Robert De Niro. It was effectively DiCaprio's "breakout role" and helped to propel his stellar career in the film industry.
This week at the Cannes Film Festival, DiCaprio presented De Niro with an honorary Palme d'Or, one of the industry's most prestigious awards. And as BuzzFeed detailed, DiCaprio used the opportunity to give his former co-star some unbelievable praise, crediting him for starting his "entire career."
“That moment changed my life forever, started my entire career in the world of cinema,” DiCaprio said of De Niro choosing him as his co-star in This Boy's Life.
After joking about De Niro keeping a mostly private life when not on camera, DiCaprio presented the 81-year-old with the award while continuing the well-deserved high praise.
“If I’m lucky, I’ll get a nod from him tonight, maybe even a half smile. And I would take that as a standing ovation. And every once in a while, even the most private giants deserve their moment, a moment to be acknowledged, not just for their work, but for the quiet lasting influence they’ve had on so many lives,” he said, wrapping up his speech.
“So, without trying to speak for the entire world of cinema here tonight, but probably doing it anyway, there is no one more deserving of this Palm d’Or lifetime achievement award than Mr. Robert De Niro.”
