Tim Allen recently launched his third starring sitcom, Shifting Gears, which has already become a smash hit in the ratings. But at 71, Allen realizes that his time on network television may be coming to an end.
In the series, Allen plays a widower who runs an auto shop and reluctantly takes in his estranged daughter, played by Kat Dennings, and her two children. The Jan. 8 premiere was ABC’s most watched series debut since The Conners in 2018, amassing nearly 17 million multi-platform viewers across ABC, Hulu, Hulu on Disney+, and other digital platforms in its first seven days.
It seems that once again, Allen has struck gold, following eight seasons of Home Improvement and nine seasons of Last Man Standing, which aired from 2011 to 2017.
"Somebody I was talking to called me the Tom Brady of TV with those three sitcoms, and I hadn't thought of that but it got in my head," Allen told USA Today in an interview published on Wednesday. However, even Brady retired eventually. And though Allen continues to be popular in both sitcoms and movies such as the The Santa Clause franchise, he thinks Shifting Gears is probably his last sitcom.
"This probably will be the end of it," he continued. "That sounds depressing, but I did [Shifting Gears] because it seemed like a good idea that would be fun. That's really it."
But assuming this series also has a long run ahead of it, that won't be for quite a few years. In the meantime, Allen emphasized how much he enjoys working.
"I just love being around the camera people and actors and the crew, so much so that I'm more uncomfortable at the thought of leaving the set and, God forbid, going to play golf," he added.
Interestingly enough, not all of Allen's former co-stars have told quite the same story about working with him behind-the-scenes.
