'The Odyssey' Confirms Release Date, Reveals Matt Damon in Epic Lead Role

The voyage of a man, his crew, and a ship, in a desperate attempt to find their way home, is one of the oldest adventure stories of all time. Literally. The Odyssey is an epic story attributed to Homer, written in the 8th century, but certainly much older. It stands as one of the most important and riveting epics ever. And now, with a new 21st-century version of The Odyssey coming from director Christopher Nolan, we've just learned who will be playing the central hero, Odysseus,

As revealed by Universal Pictures on social media, Matt Damon will play Odysseus, King of Ithaca, in The Odyssey. And, the studio also confirmed that the movie is coming much sooner than you probably thought.

What is The Odyssey?

The Odyssey tells the story of Odysseus, trying to make his way home to Ithaca after fighting in the Trojan Wars. (Which are depicted in The Iliad.) But, the voyage is not exactly a straight line, Odysseus and his crew find themselves facing all sorts of fantastic diversions and side-quests, including a battle with a one-eyed monster called Polyphemus, an escape from a witch named Circe, a deadly maneuver between a two sea monsters called Scylla and Charybdis, and a massive showdown upon arriving back at Ithaca to reclaim the throne.

While the classic 2000 film O Brother, Where Art Thou? is a loose retelling of The Odyssey, the last major straightforward attempt to make a cinematic version of the story was a TV miniseries in 1997 starring Armand Assante as Odysseus, Bernadette Peters as Circe, and Isabella Rossellini as the goddess Athena.

Christopher Nolan's Odyssey will include Tom Holland and Zendaya in undisclosed roles, as well as Punisher actor Jon Bernthal. On top of that, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Charlize Theron, and Lupita Nyong'o are also in the film, though there is no confirmation yet on who any of them are playing either.

That said, many people are guessing that Holland could play Telemachus, son of Odysseus. Meanwhile, it seems possible that Hathaway, Theron, or Nyong'o could all play Athena, Penelope, or Circe. As of right now, only Damon's role has been confirmed.

The Odyssey release date

Christopher Nolan's version of The Odyssey will hit theaters on July 17, 2026.
