Former Saturday Night Live writer Harper Steele claims she came to Jay-Z’s aid during an episode during the 26th season in a unique way.
Steele recently appeared on Late Night With Seth Meyers and recalled a sketch she wrote for an episode where Jay-Z was the musical guest in December 2000. The particular bit saw the rapper (along with Beanie Sigel and Memphis Bleek) appearing with Will Ferrell’s Robert Goulet character as they promoted their “rap-and-roll” album.
Throughout the sketch, the rappers repeatedly take drags from a joint; according to Steele, it was really weed. The writer said Jay-Z asked to meet with her after dress rehearsal, and she said it was “terrifying.”
“I get there between dress and air, and Jay-Z goes, ‘Can we get a real joint?’ And I was like, ‘Yeah, you’re Jay-Z. Of course you can,” she told Meyers.
She said she went and found a staff member who had marijuana and she procured the joint.
“Jay-Z used it on air,” she said.

She recalled the entire studio then reeked of smoke the rest of the night and the woman responsible for standards and practices at the time, Betzy Torres-Mitchell, sent an intern to come find her.
“I look at this little pimply-faced inter and I go, ‘You tell Betzy Torres that I went home,” she said. “I do think that’s the first time a live drug was on the show Saturday Night Live. I think everyone else is faking it. I got the first one on.”
