These Are YouTube’s Top 10 Trending Topics of 2023

YouTube has released its top 10 trending topics of 2023. The list reads as an instant nostalgia hit from the previous 12 months. Well-known pieces of pop culture, like Jack Black’s “Peaches” song from The Super Mario Bros. Movie and Greta Gerwig’s blockbuster Barbie, rubbed elbows with arguably more obscure topics, like the horror mascot video game Garten of Banban.

YouTube compiles its trending topics based on views, uploads, and creator activity around each topic. “Only topics determined to have conspicuous popularity this year, either because they were new to 2023 or because they experienced significant increases in user interest metrics, were eligible,” the company specified in a press release.

Topping the list was the YouTube Shorts series Skibidi Toilet, Alexey Gerasimov’s animated show about a war between humans with toilet heads and humanoids with electronic devices for skulls. McDonalds much-discussed Grimace Shake notched second, while the decidedly less appetizing topic of artificial intelligence placed as the ninth most-popular topic of 2023. Mexican artist Peso Pluma came in right above AI, at number eight.

On YouTube’s list of most popular songs, which tabulates “official music videos, lyric videos, and user-generated content” to find results, Toosi’s "Favorite Song" took the top spot. Miley Cyrus’ “Flowers” came in at number two; the song also took ninth place on the overall trends chart. Morgan Wallen’s “Last Night” placed fifth on the list, while SZA’s “Snooze” was number nine. Mr. Beast predictably took the honor of most popular creator.
