To close out the year, Google has released its annual Year in Search to find out what people were searching for in 2023, which coincidentally also happens to be the 25th anniversary of the company. And while much of the data—which reflects the top trending searches, rather than the top searches overall—is geared towards news, current events, pop culture, and entertainment, the search engine also learned what health-related questions people were interested in over the past 12 months.
Interestingly enough, while the pandemic is not considered to be over, the top 10 searches certainly seem to indicate that people seem less worried about Covid-19 or related symptoms than they would have been in recent previous years.
However, catching or spreading strep throat is a major concern for searchers, as the top two health-related questions are "how long is strep contagious?" and "how contagious is strep throat?"
But while strep is trending at the top of the list, the rest is decidedly a mixed bag.
The third most-searched question comes from people asking how to lower their cholesterol, while the fourth comes from those looking to reduce bloating. The fifth question is another cardiovascular-related question from people wondering what causes low blood pressure. To round out the list are questions about everything from warts and snoring to preeclampsia and food poisoning.
