Video: Ball Brothers Promote Father's Embattled Footwear Line

Lonzo Ball and his brother LaMelo are on social media this week promoting the latest release from their father Lavar's Big Baller Brand footwear line, although neither one wears them on the court nowadays.

Lonzo hasn’t played an NBA game since Jan. 14, 2022, when he tore his meniscus. One report claimed that the Lakers privately blame his choice of BBB footwear, worn during the beginning of Lonzo's professional career, for his initial injury. Lonzo himself said he once had to change the shoes each quarter because they would fall apart; he was not wearing BBBs in the Jan. 14 game.

He's since undergone three surgeries, including one in March to replace cartilage in his knee. His progress has been slow going, though, and it’s reported he’ll now miss the 2023–24 season.

Despite the setback, both Ball brothers are out promoting Big Baller’s new line of kicks, their Genegg Slippers. Lonzo appears in a pair of white and red shoes, announcing that he just got out of knee surgery at the time of recording.

In LaMelo’s clip, he shows off a pair of red Genegg’s while discussing an upcoming collaboration with his own lifestyle brand LaFrancé. He shows off his “LF” insignia tattoo, revealing that the shoes will feature a revised version of the logo.

Fans seemed less than enthused by the promotion, joking that their father forced them to record the videos.

Lavar Ball started Big Ballers in 2017, charging nearly $500 per pair, but the shoes were reportedly constructed poorly and he later became embroiled in a lawsuit with his co-founder. Ball only wore BBB once in an official NBA season game, quickly abandoning them for a variety of other brands.

Lonzo Ball played 252 games in his career prior to injuring his knee. He averaged 11.9 points, 5.7 rebounds, and 6.2 assists during his time with the Lakers, Pelicans, and Bulls.
