Apple Cutting Support for Older iPhones With iOS 17 Launch

Apple is rolling out an iOS 17 software update this fall, chock full of new features from keyboard and Messages upgrades to a journal app and grocery list capabilities. But you'll only get to use these features if your iPhone is a newer model, as older generation iPhones will be left in the dust.

The good news is that most recent models will be accommodated, according to CNET. Standard, Pro, Pro Max, and Mini (when applicable) models of the iPhone 11, 12, 13, and 14 will all be eligible to upgrade to iOS 17. So will the iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, iPhone XR, and the second generation or later of the budget-friendly iPhone SE.

However, the iPhone X, first generation iPhone SE, and any earlier models won't support iOS 17, and will be relegated to iOS 16.

The company first announced the new iOS upgrade during its Worldwide Developers Conference on June 5. But it was largely overshadowed by the announcement of the Apple Vision Pro, the company's new virtual reality headset and first major device launch since the the Apple Watch first debuted in 2014.

Those excited to try out the brand new features of iOS 17 can check out the public beta, which will be available in July, before the full upgrade rolls out likely in September.

You can check your device model by going to the Settings app, tapping General, and then About.
