The 2023 U.S. Open kicked off yesterday at the Los Angeles Country Club, and it's already hosted two moments never before seen in the championship's 128-year history. The 34-year-old golfer Rickie Fowler finished Round 1 with an eight-under par score of 62, breaking the U.S. Open's single-round record in the process. But he only retained solo custody of the title for a few minutes, as 29-year-old Xander Schauffele also clocked an eight-under 62.
Fowler and Schauffele also entered an exclusive club with their achievement. The two Americans tied the all-time record for lowest round score in a major tournament. Only one other golfer in history, Branden Grace of South Africa, has ever hit 62 in a major round, reaching the unprecedented score at the 2017 Open Championship.
The competition between the golfers has been nothing but friendly, however. They dapped it up after their history-making performances yesterday and joked about Schauffele constantly being right behind Fowler.
“I kept making birdie. I was like, ‘Second still, second still, second still.’ I was like, 'Bastard!'” Schauffele told Fowler. Fowler, meanwhile, wasn't paying attention to the leaderboard until he played his 18th hole of the day. “I looked over and I saw you were seven under and I was like, 'Oh,'" he confessed. It turns out Schauffele had been chasing him the whole time and was keeping a close eye on his opponent's scores. "I was peeking all day, baby!"
Round 2 of the U.S. Open kicked off today with Fowler and Schauffele leading the pack. The championship wraps up on Sunday with a record-setting $20 million purse on the line.
