Talk about trashy behavior. Soccer star Cristiano Biraghi received a nasty head wound during the UEFA Europa Conference League final last night after he was pelted with trash by fans in the stands in the middle of the game.
Biraghi was preparing for a corner kick when he was hit by several pieces of debris, including what appeared to be full drink cups, flying out of the stands. He reacted by giving the fans a mocking round of applause and then turned to continue the game before officials noticed blood pouring down the back of his head.
The game had to be brought to a halt as medics tended to Biraghi's wounds. Meanwhile, players and coaches motioned desperately for the fans to rein in their rowdy behavior. After cleaning him up and wrapping his head in a bandage—which conveniently matched his team uniform in a striking purple—he was allowed to continue playing.
The incident occurred at Fortuna Arena in Prague, Czech Republic, where West Ham were taking on Biraghi's Fiorentina. It wasn't the only injury of the game. Fiorentina Luca Jovich had to exit the game at half time due to a broken nose.
"I spoke to the president of the Premier League, those of West Ham are animals in the way they treated ours. It's not right," said club president Rocco Commisso according to a report from BBC. "This match could be won 3-0. I'm sorry for the fans, they deserved more."
Ultimately, West Ham was victorious with a final score of 2–1.
