Head into the weekend, the leader of the Players Championship isn't exactly who fans would have guess.
After firing a 67 and 66 on Thursday and Friday respectively, 23-year-old Akshay Bhatia entered the weekend tied with Min Woo Lee for the lead at 11-under. The youngster wasted no time gaining a one-stroke advantage over Lee after birdieing the first hole to move to 12-under for the tournament on Saturday afternoon.
Unfortunately for Bhatia, his round was derailed slightly by inclement weather as he lost four strokes on just three holes on the front nine. He battled back, playing even par golf the rest of the round to shoot a three-over, 75 and sit four shots back of the leader, J.J. Spaun, heading into Sunday.
His impressive play from earlier in the tournament resurfaced as he birdied three of his first four holes to move to 11-under for the tournament and sit in a tie with Rory McIlroy during the final round. He struggled over the next few holes, though, carding two bogeys and another birdie to move to two-under for the round and 10-under for the tournament - which just entered a delay due to scary weather conditions.
As Bhatia continues to play well, fans have flocked to his social media channels to learn a bit more about him - and subsequently his fiancee, Presleigh Schultz.
She posted a two-word message in a video showing Bhatia walking around the course on Sunday. "Final stretch," she said just before the tournament entered the delay.
Bhatia sits just two shots back of the leader, Rory McIlroy, as both have fewer than seven holes left to play in the tournament.
