If you’re a dedicated hiker, it’s worth having a few footwear options in the rotation. But if you were to have just one pair of shoes, rugged water-resistant ankle hiking boots will allow you to conquer most day hikes in any season.
Portland-based Columbia is a mainstay of economical outdoor gear, and the brand’s Newton Ridge Hiking Boot is a classic boot that features a waterproof upper and deep traction for handling any terrain. Right now, this already affordable boot is on major sale. Typically $100, it’s on sale for as low as $58, with very limited quantities available for just $33 as well. It’s the No. 2 bestselling hiking boot on Amazon, boasting over 27,000 five-star ratings. There is a wide range of colors to choose from, so prices change based on the style.

The boots feature a leather upper with mesh panels on the tongue for breathability, with a PU coating for waterproof performance. The stitching is seam-sealed to reinforce weak points and prevent water from seeping in, and the boots are designed to be breathable as well, keeping feet comfortable on long hikes on rainy days. They’re not Gore-Tex, so they won’t offer top-of-the-line waterproofing and breathability, but they’ll be suited to light rain or inclement weather.
The outsole features a deep tread for secure footing on uneven terrain, whether a dusty, dry path or a muddy trail. The midsole is made from lightweight foam that provides cushioned comfort. At just under 1 pound per shoe for a size 9 boot, these shoes are also lighter weight than most comparable boots, keeping feet comfortable and fatigue-free for long days on the move.

Shoppers were impressed with the boots’ performance, comparing them favorably to pricier boots. "They're much lighter than what they look like in photos,” one shopper wrote, adding, "Comparable boots by Keen, Merrell, and Timberland regularly run $40-$50 more.” Another reviewer called the boots "better than Timberlands," adding that the Columbia boots are "still going strong after almost 1-1/2 years of constant daily use." Another added that their "feet remained 100% dry," when walking in "30-degree rainy weather."
Other shoppers found them versatile in varied conditions, with one writing that the boots "work wonders in all weather." Shoppers also appreciated the traction, with one writing, “The soles have a great grip and I feel safe hiking the mountains and the rocks. They are light [so] my legs don't get tired.” Another added that the boots have "very good traction" on snow and ice.
Columbia’s affordable yet capable boots can tackle any terrain year-round, and while they’re already affordable at just $100, they’re even better at a discount. Consider picking them up on sale starting at $58.
