REI's Lightweight Hiking Pack Holds 'Far More Than You Think,' and It's Just $42

Men’s Journal aims to feature only the best products and services.  If you buy something via one of our links, we may earn a commission.

Even on a quick out-and-back or moderate day hike, it’s important to be prepared. A lot of what you need can fit into a sling or hip bag, but investing in a proper daypack can take your hike from good to great.

While there are a lot of high-end packs out there, fortunately, you don’t need to spend a lot to get a solid hiking daypack. As a go-to destination for outdoor gear, REI also manufactures solid hiking equipment and apparel. REI’s Flash 22 Hiking Pack is ideal for day hiking or travel. It’s currently just $42, a 30% savings on the already reasonably priced pack. It’s available in a muted green or eye-catching teal.

The 22-liter size makes it a good compact option for daily use, but there’s enough functional storage to easily organize your must-have gear. The flap-top features a zippered pouch for storing any quick-access items, and there’s also a side-entry zippered sleeve. The inner compartment is secured with two buckles and a drawstring, and it has pockets for smaller items. There’s also a removable panel that gives the bag some structure.

There are two spacious water bottle pockets, plus a compartment for attaching a hydration bladder, making it easy to stay hydrated on a hot day. External attachment loops can be used for items like trekking poles. Mesh padding on the back of the bag adds comfort and breathability.

Despite how many pockets and features this bag packs in, it's an ultralight bag, weighing just 14 ounces. The bag also features a packable hip belt and a removable sternum strap, allowing you to add more support when carrying heavy gear. The recycled nylon construction helps reduce the environmental impact of manufacturing the bag.

This bag is popular with shoppers for both hiking and travel, with one writing that the double buckle and cinch closure “makes it almost impossible to pickpocket, great for city use.” Another wrote that it was the “perfect under-seat carryon for a four-day trip.”

As for hiking-specific features, one reviewer mentioned that the “deep exterior pockets are perfect for a water bottle or rain jacket. My hydration pack works well with the pocket and I love that it also has an opening for the hose to feed through.” Another mentioned this bag as their “go-to bag for shorter day hikes year round.” One shopper mentioned that the bag can “hold far more than you can think,” and that they “get as much use out of it on a long car trip as I do on a multi-day camping trip.”

You’ll want to act fast before this versatile everyday bag sells out.
