Netflix's Outer Banks has been amassing a cult following since debuting at the height of the pandemic in April 2020, landing at the top of the Nielsen ratings U.S. streaming chart following its second season. Ahead of its fourth season, as a testament to the popularity of the series, one of the stars received the full Beatles heartthrob treatment on the set of his new film.
Drew Starkey, who plays Rafe Cameron on the series, will next appear in his first major film role in the upcoming historical romantic drama Queer, alongside Daniel Craig. The film, an adaptation of the 1985 William S. Burroughs novella of the same name, follows an outcast American expat (Craig) who becomes infatuated with a younger man (Starkey) in 1940s Mexico City.
In a GQ profile published on Thursday, director Luca Guadagnino admitted that he had never seen the teen drama before approaching Starkey for the role. However, it didn't take long for him to realize the star power he had on his hands.
"I had not seen Outer Banks nor knew that Drew was in it," Guagadnino told the publication in an email. "I discovered that Drew made it and was a celebrity the day in which, leaving the studios after a day of work, I saw a thick crowd of fans holding banners with his name in front of the gates, screaming, ‘Drew, Drew, Drew!'"
For his part, Craig also unsurprisingly "had zero prior knowledge" of Outer Banks before working with Starkey. "There were a lot of people outside the studio every night lined up with big signs saying, 'Hi Drew,'" the 55-year-old actor recalled.
"I liked Drew from the moment I met him," Craig added. "He’s such a wonderful, kind human being, and that was very obvious to me from the very start."
Queer, which wrapped up filming last summer, does not have an official release date yet. But in the meantime, you can catch Starkey in season four of Outer Banks, which is expected to premiere sometime in 2024.
