A college wrestler in Kentucky tragically died over the weekend after allegedly being strangled to death by his teammate and roommate, TMZ reported.
The horrifying incident occurred last weekend at Kentucky's Campbellsville University. Police responded to a call alerting them to an unconscious male in one of the dorms. When they arrived, they discovered Josiah Kilman, 18, clinging to life. He was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Shortly after Kilman’s death, police issued an arrest warrant for Charles Escalera, 21. Escalera was Kilman’s roommate, and the two competed on the university’s wrestling team together. Escalera was apprehended a few hours later, after police received reports of a suspicious person lurking around a barn on the county line.
"Escalera was taken into custody by Kentucky State Police without incident," a Campbellsville police spokesperson confirmed to TMZ. He has been charged with second-degree murder and burglary, and is being held on a $2 million bond at Taylor County Correctional Center.
“It is with heavy hearts that we share the loss of Josiah Kilman, who left us far too soon,” Campbellsville University said in a statement. “Our thoughts and deepest condolences go out to Josiah’s family, friends, and the entire university community during this difficult time.”
Kilman’s family has set up a GoFundMe page to bring his remains home to Montana for a proper burial. As of Thursday afternoon, the campaign raised over $71,000 on a $65K goal.
"There are no words strong enough to mend the broken hearts of this family right now,” said a statement on the fundraiser’s page. “We are all truly in shock at the unexpected loss of Josiah, and we are asking for an abundance of prayers for them as they grapple with this devastating tragedy.”
The exact circumstances surrounding Kilman’s death are still under investigation by local authorities.
