A Spoonful Of Sugar: Cultural Significance Of Sugar In Indian Cuisine

Sugar, an integral part of Indian culinary traditions, weaves a delightful tale of cultural significance that resonates throughout the diverse tapestry of Indian customs. From the iconic festivities of weddings to the vibrant celebrations of festivals, sugar takes center stage, symbolizing joy, abundance, and a collective sense of delight. Once revered as a luxury commodity reserved for the elite, sugar's scarcity and association with affluence enhanced its cultural importance, becoming a symbol of prosperity and success within Indian society. Indian cuisine encompasses a diverse range of sugar varieties, including granulated sugar, jaggery, and palm sugar, each lending its distinctive flavour to culinary creations.
Sugar assumes a foundational role, not only in adding sweetness to delectable sweets and desserts but also in striking a harmonious balance with the spices and flavours that define savoury Indian dishes. Whether it's the enticing aroma of a steaming cup of Masala Chai or the intricate craftsmanship of traditional mithais (sweets), sugar elevates the taste and sensory experience of countless culinary delights. Embedded within the fabric of Indian customs, sugar's cultural significance has evolved, interwoven with traditions and festivities. It has become an indispensable ingredient in the creation of traditional sweets that grace the tables during religious and cultural holidays. Togetherness can be forged over sweets.

In India, holidays are occasions for family reunions, and sweets are a key component in bringing people together. It's a time to share recipes, discover new ways to make sweets, and trade sweets with one another. Additionally, since India is a country with many different languages, faiths, and customs and each region has its own distinctive sweet foods, sweets are a reflection of the diversity of Indian culture. Sweets are a reflection of India's rich and diverse culinary past, from the rasgullas of Bengal to the jalebis of North India, the gulab jamuns of Maharashtra to the Mysore pak of South India. These mouth-watering treats transcend their edible form, symbolizing the interconnected emotions of happiness, and cherished relationships that are intricately linked to these momentous occasions.
Beyond its role in culinary traditions, sugar holds deep associations with hospitality, charity, and the delight of sharing in Indian culture. It finds expression in the generous distribution of sweets at weddings, where every guest is welcomed with a symbol of sweetness and warmth. Furthermore, sugar becomes a gesture of devotion in religious ceremonies, representing the essence of dedication and generosity. As India opened its doors to foreign influences and cultural exchanges, the culinary landscape experienced a delightful fusion of flavors and techniques. The introduction of Western desserts and baked goods into Indian cuisine expanded the horizons of sugar's usage and importance.

Traditional mithai walas (sweet vendors) began embracing these influences, skilfully infusing their creations with elements of chocolate and other Western ingredients. This newfound blend of flavours delighted palates across the nation, igniting a desire for fusion sweets that combined the best of both worlds. Today, people eagerly anticipate indulging in these innovative confections, which have become the centerpiece of weekend indulgences and special occasions. In the wake of growing health awareness and concerns regarding excessive sugar consumption, the cultural significance of sugar has also experienced shifts. Emphasizing the importance of moderation and balance, there is an increasing exploration of alternative sweeteners and healthier substitutes without compromising the essence of traditional Indian sweets and desserts.
This evolution ensures that the flavors and cultural heritage associated with sugar endure while adapting to the changing needs and preferences of a health-conscious society. Nevertheless, sugar remains deeply rooted in the heart of Indian culinary traditions, continuing to exude its cultural significance. It symbolizes sweetness, warmth, and the shared feeling of delight and celebration. To ensure the utmost hygiene and quality, packaged sugar has gained prominence over loose sugar. Packaged sugar not only meets stringent cleanliness standards but also provides convenience and precision in measurement, ensuring an optimal cooking and dining experience.
The cultural significance of sugar in Indian cuisine is a sweet symphony that celebrates the essence of happiness, abundance, and togetherness. As it entwines with the rich tapestry of Indian customs, sugar unveils the flavoursome heritage passed down through generations. It bridges cultural boundaries, infusing traditional delicacies with innovative flair. Whether savouring a classic mithai or indulging in fusion confections, sugar continues to inspire moments of pure delight, spreading its sweetness across the palates and hearts of all who savour it.

Study Reveals the Most Expensive U.S. States for Fast Food

That Big Mac might be costing you more depending on where you live.

A study by NetCredit determined the most expensive states and cities for fast food. NetCredit analyzed GrubHub data to determine the cost of menu items from Burger King, McDonald’s, Popeyes, KFC, Pizza Hut, and Taco Bell in the largest cities of each American state. They then determined the average national price, as well as the price premium, above or below the national average. Their findings revealed that fast food prices are anything but uniform.

Anchorage, AK and Honolulu, HI both pay more than 18 percent above the national average for fast food, the biggest discrepancy for any location analyzed. Alaska is also the state that sees the biggest upcharge on fast food, with an 18.17 percent increase over the national average. Food is infamously pricey in remote Alaska, which explains some of the increase.

The study also found that Alaskans are increasingly willing to pay even more money—anywhere from $10–$30— to companies such as DoorDash to bring orders straight to their door because some parts of Alaska are only accessible by plane.

“There’s literally no roads to connect these people to McDonald’s or to KFC or whatever,” Katie Burrows, an airline assistant in southwest Alaska, explained in the report. “Paying an expediter or DoorDashing something to our office and paying $20 is really not that expensive compared to going into town.”

McDonald’s items were found to be priciest in Alaska, Massachusetts, and Vermont. Massachusetts came under some fire earlier this year when it was found that the state was selling America’s most expensive Big Mac, at nearly $8 per sandwich. McDonald’s responded to this by telling Business Insider that “prices are ultimately at the discretion of our franchisees and may vary by restaurant.” There's no word on whether prices will increase once McDonald's implements its changes to the Big Mac.

Of all the chains studied, Pizza Hut had the most variable prices. Hawaiians pay a 25.64 percent difference in the cost of a 14-inch Meat Lovers, Veggie Lovers, or Pepperoni Lovers Pizza, 12.68 percent above the national average. Pizza Hut prices are generally cheaper across the mid-East, possibly due to the large amount of pizza establishments in this region making prices more competitive.

The study did reveal a few glimmers of positive fast food news, though. It was found that Floridians are getting a preferential deal on Burger King, which makes sense is it originated in their state. The price of Whoppers, French fries, and bacon double cheeseburgers are down 6 percent there from the national average.

New Yorkers also got some surprising news as the study determined that Subway sandwiches are significantly cheaper in their state than the national average. The cost of a sandwich in New York is 4.6 percent below the chain’s national average. The company closed more than 1,000 locations in 2021, with New York losing a whopping 22 percent of its Subway sandwich shops in just a few years. That might account for the preferential pricing in that region.

Hattiesburg, Mississippi was deemed the least expensive city for fast food. Residents there pay 12.14 percent below the national average. Texas was found to be the cheapest state overall, with two cities amongst the 10 cheapest in the U.S.

Below are the top 10 most expensive states for fast food in the U.S. You can find the full list here.

  1. Alaska (18.17 percent above the national average)
  2. Washington (12.91 percent)
  3. Hawaii (11.98 percent)
  4. California (11.75 percent)
  5. Vermont (7.89 percent)
  6. New Hampshire (7.60 percent)
  7. Massachusetts (7.20 percent)
  8. Oregon (6.85 percent)
  9. Rhode Island (6.63 percent)
  10. New York 5.96 (percent)

Tesla Cybertruck Involved in First Crash With Toyota Corolla

Just one month after debuting, the new Tesla Cybertruck has been involved in its first reported collision. The incident occurred on Thursday afternoon when the Tesla crashed into a Toyota Corolla in Palo Alto, CA.

The battery electric full-size pickup truck, which was introduced as a concept vehicle in November 2019, has become known for its unusual triangular body design and flat stainless steel metal sheet panels. Safety experts have raised concerns that the angular design and steel exterior could pose risks to pedestrians, cyclists, and other vehicles on the road.

Though, in this instance, the driver of the Cybertruck sustained only a minor injury and declined medical transportation. According to a report by the California Highway Patrol, the vehicle also did not appear to be operating in autonomous mode.

However, photos of the accident that have since surfaced on Reddit show that the Cybertruck didn't seem to suffer much damage, despite the side-curtain airbags having been deployed, while the Corolla did not fare nearly as well.

View the original article to see embedded media.

Dashcam footage taken from the scene likewise shows the Corolla's front end smashed up with significant damage where it came to a rest on the side of the road.

CHP confirmed to The Verge that the Tesla Cybertruck had been carrying three passengers when it was hit by the 2009 Toyota Corolla, which was being driven by a 17-year-old.

"Our preliminary investigation indicates a Toyota Corolla was traveling south on SR-35 southbound, south of Page Mill Road, at an unknown speed, when the driver, for unknown reasons, turned to the right and subsequently struck a dirt embankment on the right shoulder," the CHP report states. "The Toyota then re-entered the roadway, crossed over the double yellow lines into the northbound lane, and crashed into a Tesla Cybertruck traveling north on SR-35 northbound."

Authorities added that an investigation into the incident is ongoing.

Lost Rolex Sells for 20 Times What a Buyer Paid at Auction

When London commuters lose things on the city's public transportation system, the items are taken to Greasby's auction house, a family-run business founded in 1919. In addition to Transport for London lost and found, the auction house likewise sells museum lost property, police evidence, and items from household and shop clearances.

And for dedicated customers who frequent the shop, there are bargains to be found and profits to be turned.

Case in point, UK's The Telegraph recently published a piece on the auction house and spoke with one buyer in his 40s who once paid £500 for a Rolex he got at auction, that turned out to be worth considerably more.

The man, identified only as "Rupert," works part-time at HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC), the UK's tax, payments and customs authority. However, he supplements his income “buying and selling tech" and regularly bids on items at Greasby's. "I pick up stuff here and sell it on eBay," he said. Working with a partner, they spend "a couple of grand, on average, on devices, earbuds, headphones and stuff" at auction, with the hopes of doubling their money online.

But in the instance of the Rolex, he made his money back and then some; turning a profit for £10,000, a whopping 20 times what he paid.

"It obviously didn’t come with any papers," Rupert admitted. When asked if he used the money to go on a vacation, he shook his head and said that he instead "paid off some debts."

Considering the underground market for fake luxury watches, he was especially lucky that it didn't turn out to be a counterfeit Rolex. A fool and his money may soon be parted, but in this instance the gamble paid off.

REI's Final Members-Only Sale of 2023 Gets You Markdowns on Yeti Coolers, On Running Shoes, and More Until Tonight

Men’s Journal aims to feature only the best products and services.  If you buy something via one of our links, we may earn a commission.

REI has announced its final member discount of 2023, granting REI Co-op members 20% off the most expensive item in their cart until 11:59 p.m. PST. This comes after a wave of holiday sales that saw discounts on everything from winter jackets to car roof racks.

This member discount is slightly different as REI Co-op members (and those interested in becoming members) have one day to save on products that weren’t available during the other events, including Yeti coolers, running shoes from On, and even the iconic #500-series Chelsea boots from Blundstone.

To get the discount, members have to log into their REI Co-op accounts and use the code “WINTER23” at checkout. Those who aren’t members have the opportunity to gain access to this discount by signing up today for a lifetime membership for the one-time $30 fee. Signing up also grants access to free standard shipping with no minimums, discounted rentals and shop services, plus 10% back at the end of the year on eligible purchases. If you sign up today, REI will also give you a $30 bonus card to be used on a future purchase.

There are a few exclusions on today’s discount, including bikes, skis, snowboards, and other seasonal gear. Despite that, the lineup of eligible products is too good to pass up. Here’s what we’re looking at today during REI’s final members-only discount.

Blundstone Original Chelsea Boots, $168 (was $209) at REI

The Blundstone #510 Chelsea Boot

It’s rare enough to find Blundstone boots on sale, let alone the original series. But the #510 Chelsea boots in black are just $168 with today’s REI member discount. These boots are a fantastic pick for winter thanks to their durable lug sole and weather-sealed leather and stitching. But even after winter, they’re a solid pick to punch up an outfit. This pair isn’t insulated, so it’d be wise to rock them with a pair of wool socks. For something warmer, look into the insulated Chelsea boot, which comes in black and brown.

Yeti Roadie 48 Wheeled Cooler, $360 (was $450) at REI

The Yeti Roadie 48 Hard Cooler

Yeti coolers also seldom go on sale, which makes this a rare opportunity to snag one for less. We’ve personally tested the Roadie 48 and swear this is the best Yeti cooler you could have. The 48 size is perfect for chilling food for a weekend camping trip, drinks for a party of 12-15, or a beach day for a large family. The wheels are paramount for convenience, too, making them easier to move than the Yeti Tundra coolers and less of a drag on your shoulder than the soft coolers.

On Cloud X 3 Road-Running Shoes, $120 (was $150) at REI

Sometimes, stepping into a new brand of running shoes after sticking with one brand for so long can be daunting. Getting a discount on a new pair makes the transition easier, though. The Cloud X 3 is a new style at REI and is good for runners with neutral foot types who prefer road or treadmill running. They have an 8mm drop, which is helpful for forward propulsion, and are made from a total of 35-40% recycled materials.

TikTok Users Unlock McDonald’s Hack for Extra Tasty McNuggets

TikTok users are abuzz as news of the latest McDonald’s hack rolls across the platform. Back in February, user @xomakel2 urged their followers to order their McNuggets “extra crispy” the next time they stop at McD’s. They even show off a box of gleaming, golden, super crispy McNuggets.

Nearly a year later, the hack is catching on thanks to food vlogger @tommywinkler, better known as The Food Guy. In a video posted on December 14, Winkler took himself to a McDonald’s location to order some extra crispy nuggets for himself. After a tense few moments during which it was unclear if the restaurant could meet his request, Winkler got his order and confirmed that they did indeed look “extra crispy.” The audible crunch when he bit down seemed to confirm this.

A few days later, fellow food critic Kevin Uznanski (@lord_cappucino) tried the hack, ordering a set of “well done” McNuggets. “We might be onto something here,” he said after taking his first bite. “These might be some of the best nuggets I’ve ever had at McDonald’s.”

However, some TikTok users weren’t enamored with the idea of extra-fried nuggets. “That means they are triple fried,” wrote one cautious commenter. “No thanks, I like my arteries and heart.”

Users on X (formerly Twitter) have seemingly been aware of the hack much longer than those on TikTok. “I went to McDonald's and ordered chicken nuggets extra crispy, and I've clearly lost all control of my life,” @Kays_delights wrote back in 2017.

McDonald’s has had a busy year, making a variety of shake-ups to its menu and brand. This month, the company announced major changes to the Big Mac as well as its other burgers and sandwiches. It also teased the return of the Snack Wrap and an end to its broken ice cream machine debacle, amidst opening a much-talked-about spin-off restaurant in Illinois. CosMc’s is the company’s bid at a Starbucks competitor, focusing on drinks and small snacks.

Jason Kelce Already Doesn’t Like Brother Travis' Christmas Gift

It goes without saying that talent runs in the Kelce family. Travis Kelce has two Super Bowl rings to his name as a tight end for the Kansas City Chiefs, while his older brother Jason Kelce has also taken a Super Bowl title as a member of the Philadelphia Eagles.

This year, Travis wanted to spread the holiday cheer by getting some special gifts for the people in his life. This included personalized golf carts for his Chiefs teammates as well as velour hoodies and sweatpants. When discussing the gifts with Jason on their podcast New Heights, Jason shared his thoughts on the apparel Travis got.

"I don't like velour," Jason confessed, to which Travis responded, "Dude, it's comfy." While Jason acknowledged that many people appreciate the blanket-like material, he admitted he's "not a fan" of the fabric.

Travis began to giggle and revealed that he actually got a velour jumpsuit for his brother as well. "I got you one too," he laughed.

Jason quickly changed his tune once he learned that his brother was gifting him clothes made out of the less-than-desirable fabric. "Well, actually, if it's from you, I'll like it," he said. "I was saying if it's not done right, sometimes they don't feel right."

Jason tried to stifle his laughter while Travis continued cackling at the sudden reversal. "I know exactly what you're saying," Travis said, noting that "This one's done right." Jason was pleased with the answer, saying he'll "probably love it."

After the switch-up, Travis said what many were thinking: "You can't make this s--t up, people."

Hopefully Travis' girlfriend Taylor Swift appreciated whatever he got her for Christmas.

Watch Icelandic Strongman Hafthor Björnsson Heavy Lift 925 Pounds

Icelandic strongman Hafthor Björnsson, widely considered one of the most powerful strength athletes in the world, is hard at work preparing for the 2024 Arnold Strongman Classic. It will be Björnsson’s first competition in more than three years.

Björnsson shared a video of his preparation with fans, in which he lifted a whopping 925 pounds. Though that sounds lethal, Björnsson started with smaller weights and patiently increased his pace from there, adding 110.2 additional pounds per set. To prevent from maxing himself out, Björnsson allowed himself an eight-minute rest between each interval.

Björnsson originally intended to lift a little over 900 pounds, but felt encouraged to go for the full 925 on the day. It’s a miraculous show just three months after he tore his pectoral muscle clear off of the bone during a September bench press (via Fitness Volt). He later underwent surgery to correct the injury, posting some graphic post-op photos.

Shortly afterward, Björnsson announced he would be returning for 2024’s Strongman Classic. He’d previously “retired” after 2020’s competition. Before his injury, the sportsman had his sights set on claiming the all-time world record for raw powerlifting, but he’s curtailed that goal for the time being.

“As of now, because of the injury, I feel like it’s the smartest decision for me step away for a little bit, keep training, keep building up the static strength, then at some point later on in my journey, maybe a year from now, two years from now, three years from now, I might pick it back up,” Björnsson explained in a September YouTube video.

“I set my goals so high, and I was getting strong so fast—my body wasn’t ready for it. And that’s why I got injured in my opinion,” he continued. “I need to be smarter in training. I need to give myself more time to build up that static strength. That’s why I have another goal in mind,” Björnsson said of his decision to return to Strongman.

He admitted in his most recent video that he’s still struggling with some exercises in the wake of his pec injury, such as the sandbag-to-shoulder lifts he does near the end. But Björnsson doesn’t have any doubt about his heavy lifting ability in the upcoming Strongman Classic.

“I feel great, man. I will be surprised if I don’t pull 450-kg (992-lb) at Arnold’s,” he said in the video. “My body knows how to be strong. I have been strong before, and I will get to the stage where I am strong again.”

Björnsson was named World’s Strongest Man in 2018, and has been crowned Europe’s Strongest Man five times. He placed first in three consecutive Arnold Strongman competitions, in 2018, 2019, and 2020. The 2024 Arnold Strongman Classic will take place March 1–2 in Columbus, OH. You can watch Björnsson’s full workout video below.
