Runner Hospitalized in Freak Accident With Deer During Race

A woman taking part in an annual 15K race in central New York landed in the hospital after a deer darted out of the bushes and collided with her.

The event unfolded over the weekend during the 45th annual Boilermaker 15K Road Race in Utica, New York. Jim Stasaitis, the Boilermaker race director, tells Syracuse.com that the woman was running at around the 4-mile mark when she was struck on Master Garden Road.

Witnesses say the deer jumped out of the wooded area and collided with the woman. The 9.3-mile race brought runners to a halt at the 4-mile marker to tend to the woman. Some 8,500 people took part in the race.

One of those participants included Gregory Yorton, who said he was a couple of seconds ahead of the woman when he heard a rustling coming from the bushes. Yorton told Syracuse.com that he turned around and saw "a good-sized doe" darting around rapidly before disappearing into the woods again.

In what is being referred to as a "freak accident," witnesses say that the woman suffered a bruised face and her eye was swollen.

Stasaitis, the race director, says medics volunteering at the race tended to the woman, who also suffered a leg injury. She was ultimately taken to Wynn Hospital before being transferred to Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse.

No word on her condition or her reaction about the incident. She was also far from the only runner who needed to be hospitalized. Nearly 80 people were treated by on-site medics for heat exhaustion and six needed to be hospitalized.
