6 Tips To Become A Fabulous Brunch Host

A brunch (between breakfast and lunch) is a fun meal, perfect for weekend get-togethers. You can plan an Indian-style brunch with South Indian idli-dosa or Punjabi chhole bhature-lassi or perhaps a more Western-themed brunch with sandwiches and mimosas. Whatever cuisine you pick, brunches are always a success and have a unique vibe and energy, different from a lunch or dinner party. This weekend, plan a brunch at your place with your friends or family and follow these simple tips to make it the best brunch ever.

Here Are 6 Tips To Help You Host A Perfect Brunch:

1. Get Good Rest The Night Before

Brunches mean waking up early and setting up everything before the guests arrive. Your prep for the day starts in advance by getting all the supplies and RSVPs in time so that you can get plenty of rest at night and wake up in the morning fresh and all set to become the perfect host.

2. Decorate The Table

A brunch table has got to be refreshing and tasteful. Set it up with crockery in glass or pastels. Put out vases with fresh flowers in them. Arrange everything from plates, cutlery, glasses, cups, tissue holders, trays etc.  Finish up the set-up before the guests arrive.

4. Desserts Are A Must

Even though brunch is unlike a dinner - always followed by dessert, it can be thoughtful to keep some sweet options like cupcakes, chocolates or some people-favourite mithai for an Indian-style brunch.

5. Plan Some Fun Activities

Unless only bucketloads of gossip are on the cards, you can plan some games and activities to keep your guests engaged during the get-together. You can try out some fun games or craft activities to entertain your guests.

6. Create A Photo Booth

Creating a photo booth or picture corner is easy. Simply set up a corner that is aesthetic and has good lighting for clicking pictures. Place a small banner or placard that highlights this spot as the photo booth. Leave out some random things such as hats, scarves, sunglasses, and children's toys for your guests to use as props for quirky poses.

Follow these tips and host the best brunch ever! Have fun.

Old Forester Just Dropped Its Fan-Favorite Birthday Bourbon—and We Got a First Taste

George Garvin Brown is hardly a household name. But in the world of whiskey he’s kind of a big deal. Way back in 1870, the intrepid distiller founded a humble little brand called Old Forester. Brown’s background in pharmaceuticals inspired him to sell the new product in sealed glass bottles— something that no other bourbon maker was doing at the time.

The consistent quality of his output was immediately embraced by a broad audience—and the rest, as they say, is hooch history. Today, Old Forester’s parent company, Brown-Forman (which also owns Jack Daniel's, Woodford Reserve, and Early Times) moves more American whiskey than anyone else.

To commemorate the founder's memory, Old Forester drops a supremely limited edition whiskey every year on Brown’s birthday, September 2nd. The aptly named Birthday Bourbon has been a huge hit with collectors and connoisseurs since it first debuted in 2002, when it landed as another industry innovation: the first ever vintage-dated bourbon.

Now it’s time for a taste of the 2024 iteration.

We can say without hesitation that it’s befitting of the Brown legacy. A slow nose of the mahogany-hued sipper reveals a bowl of freshly-picked stone fruit: nectarines, sliced pluots, and over-ripened apricots, to be precise. In the sip, the 107-proof juice punches well beyond its weight class. Meaning it delivers a wallop of warming cinnamon spice, molasses, and tobacco box—along with some unmistakable heat. It’s the sort of assertiveness that makes bourbon aficionados swoon. Most notable, however, might be the rich mouthfeel of the whiskey, which holds a walnut-like oiliness.

To arrive at this enviable outcome, master distiller emeritus Chris Morris and master taster Melissa Rift hand-selected 209 barrels which they deemed of exceptional quality. The flavor profile of Birthday Bourbon varies from year-to-year, and that’s kind of the point; a unique character that will never be replicated. But they're always compiled from small batches. Since inception, they have also always ranged between eight to 13 years in age statement (a span generally regarded as the sweet spot for Kentucky bourbon maturation). The 2024 offering is somewhat near the upper end of that spectrum.

As a result of its rarity and uniqueness, Birthday Bourbon has been subject to runaway pricing on secondary markets. To alleviate this unfortunate trend, Old Forester ran a special online sweepstakes for fans to “win” a bottle at its retail cost of $200. The only catch: you’ll have to make your way down to the distillery in Louisville, KY, before December 14 to claim the prize.

Beyond the Bluegrass State, you’ll have to rely on the kindness of your local liquor store to keep things reasonable. We like your chances, as pricing of the last few releases has been coming back to Earth as of late. Your best bet for scoring one of these iconic, still-shaped bottles is to get out there early, and often, on the morning of September 2nd. It’s George Carvin Brown’s birthday—and you can cry if you want to—but we’d much prefer you simply drink great bourbon in his honor.

Golf clubs are expensive—there's no getting around it. Select Callaway drivers are also heavily marked down, including the beginner-favorite Mavrik that's now over $150 off.

The Callaway Mavrik 2022 Driver is on sale at PGA Tour Superstore for just $250—38% off its normal $400 price. This is a top-selling driver among those on sale, and it's earned over 70 five-star ratings from PGATSS shoppers who say it's "forgiving and long" and that the ball "explodes off the face" at impact. It's available for both right- and left-handed golfers with two loft angles and three flex options to choose from.

This Callaway driver is constructed with a multi-layer carbon crown and an AI-designed titanium club face that combine to promote enhanced forgiveness and faster ball speeds off the tee. It features two vertical bars placed inside the head that help redistribute the center of gravity more toward the face of the club, aiding with MOI and head speed in the follow-through.

"I have a hard time spending a lot of money on new clubs," a shopper began. "But this Mavrik driver is awesome! It hits hard with just a little ping. I hit it longer and, somehow, straighter! I play with my son 90% of the time and he won't even hit his driver anymore—he walks up to the box with no club cause he's using my Maverik boomstick!"

It's also a very popular pick among beginners for its low price despite its high-quality performance. "This driver is awesome. As a beginner, it helps me keep up with my friends who are a lot more experienced than me. I'm already approaching 300-yard drives with it." Another golfer agreed, saying, "This driver makes you look and feel like you have been playing forever. Very forgiving!"

If you're looking to upgrade your basic golf bag or replace an old Callaway driver, the Mavrik 2022 is a solid pick both in value and longevity. It may have been released a few years ago, but it still lives up to the hype. Make sure to grab one for yourself while they're still in stock.

Cyclist Nearly Struck by Falling Tree in Heart-Pumping Storm Footage

A cyclist in Milwaukee was out for an easy-going ride on Tuesday, Aug. 27. But what should've been an enjoyable outing turned into a near-death experience.

A front doorbell camera captured a large tree crashing down onto the middle of a road in a Milwaukee neighborhood during a thunderstorm. The tree took down a nearby powerline with it, sending sparks into the air.

Just seconds later, the video shows a cyclist who was unable to slow down in time to avoid colliding with the fallen tree. Fortunately, he managed to escape serious injury, in part thanks to his speed at the time of the crash.

Had the tree fallen just a moment later, the cyclist could've found himself in extreme danger. Watch this:

A neighborhood resident spoke with local news about the frightening experience.

"It pulled out the ground," Fred Powers said, via WISN.com. "The whole roots. I'm telling you, I heard a boom; shook the whole house. It cut off all the power."

Hopefully, this serves as a reminder to check those weather reports before venturing outdoors.

REI's No. 1 Bestselling Trail Running Shoes Are 25% Off for Labor Day, and Shoppers Say They're 'Better Than Hoka'

Men’s Journal aims to feature only the best products and services.  If you buy something via one of our links, we may earn a commission.

REI is in the middle of a gargantuan Labor Day sale that's slashing prices on everything from bestselling sleeping pads and other camping gear to travel accessories and even rain jackets just ahead of fall. There is also a ton of footwear on sale, including the site's No. 1 bestselling hiking shoes from Altra that are surging in popularity.

Altra's Lone Peak 8 Trail Running Shoes are rising to the top of REI's most popular deals list right now while they're on sale for $105—25% off the normal $140 price. These shoes have earned over 100 five-star ratings from shoppers who say they're "excellent" for gripping trails, grass, and dirt, whether you're using them for running or hiking. They're on sale in each of the six available colors, but the blue and gray have the best sizes left, ranging from 7 to 14 with wide widths available—but that might not last much longer.

These trail runners aren't like most others because they swap traditional knit mesh uppers for a more durable ripstop mesh that's more durable, quick-drying, and much easier to clean. That means you don't have to worry about mucking them up in mud and dirt. These shoes also have a secret—they have a 0 mm drop inside, which means they promote your natural running or walking gait without the help of a declined heel-to-toe drop found in most other styles. That doesn't mean there isn't cushion, though—both the insoles and midsoles offer plenty of shock absorption and, when combined with the grippy outsoles, not even sharp rocks will slow you down.

Shoppers who step outside in Altra's Lone Peak 8s say they're super comfortable, even for those who need wide sizes. "I have very wide feet and very large feet," a shopper began. "The wide toe box provides exceptional comfort without causing any toe rubs or calluses…I'll wear the shoes for about 3 months or 300 miles, whichever comes first. They wear exceptionally well. I have tried multiple shoes—these are much better than Hoka, Brooks, and other so-called maximum-cushion wide shoes."

If you're looking to hit the trail comfortably and want to do right by your feet, it's worth trying Altra's Lone Peak 8, especially while they're on sale at REI. Make sure to grab a pair for yourself before Sept. 2, when the retailer's Labor Day sale ends.

Museum Had Surprising Response After Toddler Smashed 3,500-Year-Old Artifact

An Israeli museum had a surprising response after a toddler accidentally smashed a 3,500-year-old Bronze Age vase during a visit.

Haifa’s Hecht Museum told BBC that the pottery, which dated back to between 2200 and 1500 B.C., was on display near the entrance without a case or other protection due to the museum’s belief that there is a "special charm" to showing unbelievable archaeological discoveries "without obstructions.”

Alex, the father of the four-year-old boy who shattered the antique find, recalled that his son "pulled the jar slightly" while inspecting it because he was "curious about what was inside.” When the piece toppled, Alex was “in shock” and at first thought “it wasn't my child that did it.”

After calming the young man down, Alex went to speak with a security guard about the mishap. In a heartwarming twist, the museum didn’t punish Alex or his son but instead invited the entire family back to the museum in a few days to view the exhibit on a guided tour.

"There are instances where display items are intentionally damaged, and such cases are treated with great severity, including involving the police," said Lihi Laszlo, a spokesperson from the University of Haifa, which runs the Hecht Museum.

"In this case, however, this was not the situation,” Laszlo continued. “The jar was accidentally damaged by a young child visiting the museum, and the response will be accordingly."

In another bit of good news, the museum reported that its conservation experts are currently restoring the piece of Bronze Age art. It’s expected to resume its spot by the facility’s entrance by the time Alex and his family return to see the exhibit. Alex said he’ll be “relieved” to see the vase restored, but added that his family is “sorry” because they understand “it will no longer be the same item.”

The Haifa Museum said that “whenever possible, items are displayed without barriers or glass walls,” and “despite this rare incident” they don’t plan to change their policies.

BBC reported that the jar was likely used to carry supplies such as olive oil and wine. It predated the Biblical King David and King Solomon and is typical of the eastern Mediterranean coast’s Canaan region.

Paige VanZant Shows Off Near-NSFW Workout With Husband

Former UFC star Paige VanZant has pivoted away from the ring in recent years to a lucrative new calling on OnlyFans, as well as her podcast, Paige and Austin: A Kickass Love Story, that she hosts with her professional MMA star husband, Austin Vanderford. And this week, the power couple gave fans a little taste of a saucy workout that they use to keep in literal fighting shape.

"New bicep workout," the 30-year-old, who was born Paige Michelle Sletten, posted to TikTok on Monday evening along with a laugh-cry emoji. In the clip, appropriately set to Tinashe's "Nasty," Vanderford can be seen doing a bicep press of sorts, lifting VanZant up by her hips; who in turn pushed herself off her husband's thighs.

"You guys are all class!" quipped one user of the workout on Instagram, who clearly noticed the placement of the couple's faces during the exercise move. "It's all fun and games until someone toots," added another.

VanZant and Vanderford have been pretty transparent about their sex lives on their popular podcast, which boasts over 620,000 subscribers on YouTube. In an episode earlier this year, the couple took a fan question about how they keep things spicy in the bedroom.

"I feel like that's something we haven't had to work on yet?" VanZant responded, to which Vanderford agreed: "No, I don't either. Even six-and-a-half, seven years or however long we've been together—"

"We're very lucky that's not something we've had to actively work on," VanZant interjected, finishing his sentence. "We're pretty spicy. I think that also comes with being open and honest with each other."

"Bam, that's exactly what I was gonna say. Again, communication and talking," Vanderford continued. "Because the thing is, if you get to that point where it's like everything's stale or whatever and you're not communicating like, your wants, or my wants, it could be different. And you know if we can bring that to the table and we talk about it, and one of us is like totally against it and it's like a dealbreaker, then I don't really know what."

"Yeah, it's about being open and honest about your needs or wants or desires—saying experiment sounds so weird," VanZant added. "We're just like, I don't know, we're open, we have fun. For me, I just feel like our sex life literally only gets better. It just keeps getting better."

In other words, if that's just how the pair works out, it's not hard to see how their chemistry stays ignited in the bedroom.

Hidden Letter Found During Museum Renovation Has Biting Message

Museums and galleries display treasures found out in the field, so finding a piece of history in the museum building itself is a rarity, to say the least. But that's exactly what happened during recent renovations at the National Gallery in London

According to The Art Newspaper, contractors working at the National Gallery's Sainsbury Wing found quite a time capsule during demolition work last year that has just been unveiled. The letter, dated July 26, 1990, was written by John Sainsbury, the Lord Sainsbury of Preston Candover, one of the wing's funders. Sainsbury, who died in 2022, was the onetime president of U.K. supermarket chain Sainsbury's and issued his letter with a Sainsbury's letterhead.

"If you have found this note, you must be engaged in demolishing one of the false columns that have been placed in the foyer of the Sainsbury Wing of the National Gallery. I believe that the false columns are a mistake of the architect and that we would live to regret our accepting this detail of his design," the letter read.

"Let it be known that one of the donors of this building is absolutely delighted that your generation has decided to dispense with the unnecessary columns," Sainsbury concluded, speaking for himself.

Needless to say Sainsbury wasn't pleased some of the choices of American architects Robert Venturi and Denise Scott Brown, who chose to install two huge false columns in the gallery's foyer purely for decoration with no architectural purpose.

Per The Art Newspaper, Sainsbury got into the construction site while the wing was being built at the turn of the 1990s and dropped his letter into the concrete column. It was able to survive for decades thanks to its protection in a plastic folder.

For now, the famous letter has been entered into the National Gallery's archive as a historic document. It's not every day a museum building itself is found to contain pieces of the past.

Salma Hayek Wows in Yellow Bikini During Yacht Adventure

Salma Hayek posted a couple sultry snaps from a recent trip to Ibiza in which she showed off both her gray hair and yellow bikini.

“Yellow bikini + white hair = perfect combination,” Hayek captioned the photos. The first shows her standing on the upper level of a yacht, hanging onto a flag pole as she playfully twists herself around. The second is a closer shot in which Hayek can be seen pulling back her wet hair.

Fans were highly receptive to the photos, commending Hayek for her choice in vacation spots as well as swimwear. “Spain is beautiful this time of year,” one wrote, “and even more so now that you are there in yellow.”

West Side Story Oscar-winner Ariana DeBose simply commented, “Obsessed.”

Hayek is no stranger to posting bikini photos, and she certainly seems to know what her fans desire. Just a few weeks ago, she showed off her curvy figure in a bikini during a break from the Olympic Torch Relay. In April, during another seaside getaway, she joked that her meddling family made it nearly impossible to “take a bikini pic in peace.” A few days prior to that, she posted yet more bikini photos from a recent trip to Mexico.

“Bottom line girls, you can be a 57-year-old superstar married to the richest man in Europe and still find it necessary to set thirst traps,” another fan commented in a final mic drop.

High School Quarterback Dies After Devastating Opening Night Injury

An Alabama high school quarterback has tragically died after suffering a catastrophic injury during the opening night of the football season, WFSA 12 reported.

Caden Tellier, 16, sustained a devastating brain injury during the opening game between his team, the Morgan Academy Senators, and the Southern Academy Cougars. He was rushed to a local hospital where he was treated, but he died on Saturday morning. It was not immediately clear what caused the young man’s injuries.

Tellier’s death has led to an outpouring of grief from the small Selma, AL, community of which he was a part. On Monday, students at nearby Edgewood Academy held a prayer vigil for their peers at Morgan and Southern.

Bryan Oliver, Morgan Academy’s Headmaster, issued a statement confirming Tellier’s death and offering his support to the school’s staff and students, as well as Tellier’s extended family.

“Caden loved the Lord with all his heart and was a shining light every day he graced the halls of Morgan Academy,” Oliver wrote. “He was a student, a friend, an athlete, and, most important [sic], a Christ follower. There are no words to describe how we feel as a school community and family. Caden will never be forgotten for who he was and what he means to Morgan Academy.”

Michael McLendon, executive director of the Alabama Independent School Association (AISA) released his own statement in which he noted that all school functions have been canceled for the upcoming week to give Selma residents an opportunity to grieve.

“We ask that our entire AISA family and the people of Alabama join us in prayer for peace and comfort for Caden’s family and the Morgan Academy community as they navigate this difficult time,” McLendon said.

A GoFundMe campaign established by a friend of Tellier’s family has already raised nearly $85,000 of its $100,000 goal.

Netflix Star Rob 'The Rabbit' Pitts Dead at 45

Rob Pitts, known to fans as "The Rabbit" and star of the Netflix series Tex Mex Motors, has died at the age of 45.

Pitts himself shared the news of his passing in a YouTube video detailing his final months. He recounted how he started feeling "off" after attending the SEMA auto show last fall and started losing weight. At first, he didn't mind the slimmer figure.

"I I was getting ready to film season 2 of Tex Mex Motors for Netflix, and wanted to be camera-ready, so I didn’t mind that so much," he said. “During filming, I started to lose my appetite, and had more and more acid reflux-like symptoms."

He initially remedied these issues with trips to urgent care, though wasn't able to pinpoint the cause. After he went to the hospital, he learned that his prognosis was much more serious.

"My castmate and ‘set mom,’ Jaime, finally took me to the ER thinking I had gallbladder issues," Pitts wrote. "It was there at the end of March I was diagnosed with stomach cancer. Since then I have been getting treatments at home, and it’s been rough. More bad days than good, but hanging in there."

He didn't keep the mood down for too long, reassuring his fans that he was happy in his final days.

"I have a lot to live for and life has been going my way," he said. "Don’t be sad for me... I accomplished my dream of buying my own store, finishing season 2 of Netflix, and marrying the love of my life. Luckily she doesn't mind doing long-term things with a short-term guy."

He ended by imparting some wisdom he learned from his health journey. "If your body is telling you something is wrong, don’t stop until you figure it out," he urged his fans. "Ask questions and get answers."

Pitts is survived by his wife Randi Foraker.

Soak Tamarind:

For that tangy kick, soak tamarind in hot water. This step is crucial for that classic rasam flavour.

Shallots or Onions:

Compass Box Drops Tasty Limited-Edition Whisky Ahead of Its 25th Anniversary

Next year marks the 25th anniversary of Compass Box, the American-founded, London-based whisky maker known for its intriguing and often spellbinding blends. From its iconic and smoky Peat Monster to the possibly even smokier Celestial to the hedonistic Art & Decadence, the brand has built its reputation on pushing limits and nailing flavor profiles. Now, Compass Box is looking backward as it releases its latest offering, The Travelling Circus.

Inspired by The Circus, a limited-edition Compass Box bottle released back in 2016, The Travelling Circus leans into the flavor that helped catapult the brand onto back bars across the world: peat. That smoky, maritime essence comes from a combination of distilleries located off Scotland’s west coast, including Talisker—one of just a handful of distilleries located on the stunning Isle of Skye—and Islay’s Caol Ila.

In full, Compass Box whisky making director James Saxon hoped to create a whisky that would “capture the grandeur and vibrancy of a night at the circus.” The majority of its components were aged in sherry casks, adding to the depth of the overall flavor.

The Travelling Circus exudes a deep fruitiness, with aromatic dry smoke and a silky flourish on the palate. The smokiness gathers additional layers thanks to the Speyside sherry notes, then finishes with a grain whisky character, due to additions from the now-shuttered Port Dundas Distillery.

“We are incredibly pleased with the arrival of The Travelling Circus,” says Saxon. “The balance of sherry cask maturation and complex smokiness is something of a hallmark for Compass Box, and those who are fans of our whiskies will enjoy dissecting this latest composition. For those new to Compass Box, this is a globe-trotting introduction to the sorts of places we can explore when creatively combining high-quality Scotch whiskies.”

The one challenge of The Travelling Circus will be actually getting your hands on a bottle, since the limited edition will only be available in John F. Kennedy Airport in New York City and Los Angeles International Airport until the end of August. Bottled at 49 percent ABV, the whisky comes with a suggested retail price of $188 per 700ml bottle.
