Home Improvement fans will undoubtedly be excited to hear that Tim Allen is set to reunite with some of his former co-stars on the second season of Shifting Gears.
On Aug. 19, Deadline confirmed that Patricia Richardson, Richard Karn, and Debbe Dunning will guest star on the Season 2 premiere of the show, which will air on Wednesday, Oct. 1.
Fans reacted to the reunion news on social media.
"YAY!! One thing I love about Tim Allen is he always invites his former costars back on his current projects," one person commented on the news, which was shared on the official Instagram page for Shifting Gears.
"Aw that’s great! I know Tim Allen has been wanting to do a reunion of sorts," someone else said.
"Oh hell yeah. Bring everyone back," a third Instagram user wrote.
"This is so awesome I just finished my watch through if home improvement again! Such a great show," a fourth comment read.
Allen played Tim Taylor on Home Improvement, which was on the air from 1991 through 1999. In May 2024, Richardson, who played Taylor's wife on the show, told the Los Angeles Times that there was a big pay gap between her and Allen, which ultimately caused her to walk away, effectively ending the series.
"I told everybody, there’s not enough money in the world to get me to do a ninth year. This show is over. It needs to end," she told the outlet. Showrunners agreed that the show just couldn't continue on without Jill Taylor.
In the time since, Allen returned to television with shows like Last Man Standing and now, Shifting Gears. The latter tells the story of Allen's character, Matt, who owns a classic car restoration shop. His daughter, played by actress Kat Dennings, moves into his home with her kids, providing the main storyline of the show.
Home Improvement is one of the most watched sitcoms of the 90s, but a reboot is unlikely to occur. While Allen has expressed interest in reprising his role as Tim "the tool man" Taylor, Richardson has made it clear that she has no interest in dusting off those boots.
So, for now, fans will be able to enjoy some 90s nostalgia as the band gets back together for one night only.
