Wolves Whiskey, the California spirit brand created by fashion icons James Bond of Undefeated and Jon Buscemi of Buscemi, Truff, and Oliver Peoples, has launched its flagship American single malt. It’s the first bottling from the brand that will be available year-round.
Wolves Whiskey was founded in 2017. However, the brand didn't release its whiskey until fall 2022, instead electing to sell its limited-edition products through its website. But even when the brand started releasing its bottles in stores, they remained limited. With the release of Wolves American Single Malt, the whiskey maker is hoping to offer something permanent.
Wolves' offering remains unique among the growing American single malt market. The whiskey is aged for five years in California wine barrels in the Arizona heat, and afterward is blended from hand-selected barrels and finished in aged cognac casks.
"We were captivated by the challenge of creating a standard-bearer in the emerging category of American single malt," says Jennifer Marks, president of Wolves. "We're proud of our innovative approach and the result, a contemporary yet timeless classic that can be enjoyed year-round."
Bottled at 96 proof (48 percent ABV), Wolves American Single Malt is priced at $90 per 750ml bottle. On the nose, it smells of honey, graham cracker, caramel, and red fruit. Those notes give way to a palate of vanilla custard, nutmeg, clove, sweet oats, and fig. The finish is medium-length, and leaves a sweet taste on the tongue.
American single malt has been on a tear, recently, with its current market estimated to have a value of $300 million. Brands like Diageo-owned Bulleit, Jack Daniel’s, and Jim Beam have all gotten into the sector over the last two years and some expect it to grow to a value of over $7 billion over the next seven years. If that's true remains to be seen. For now, we're going to keep sipping on Wolves American Single Malt.
