Junior Ski Champ Dead at 19

Up-and-coming Italian skiing star Matilde Lorenzi has died at the age of 19 after a training session on Oct. 29 went tragically awry.

According to  TMZ, Lorenzi, a member of the Italian Army's sports section, was completing a training run on the Grawand G1 slope in Italy's Val Senales valley when she lost control and suffered a devastating head injury. She was taken to the hospital by helicopter where she was later pronounced dead.

The International Ski and Snowboard Federation (FIS) issued a statement grieving Lorenzi's sudden passing.

"We are deeply saddened by the passing of Matilde Lorenzi, as announced by the Italian Ministry of Defense, who conveyed heartfelt condolences for the 19-year-old athlete of the Italian Army," the statement read, per Powder. "FIS joins FISI President Flavio Roda and the entire Italian winter sports community in mourning, including coaches, athletes, teammates, the federal council, and all FISI staff."

"FISI is in mourning, standing by her family, friends, and everyone who cherished Matilde, honoring her memory today and always," the statement concluded.

Acclaimed American skiers Lindsey Vonn and Mikaela Shiffrin were among those sharing their condolences on Instagram. "This is a tragic loss. Sending my thoughts to her family," Vonn said; Shiffrin similarly sent "So much love to her family, friends, and teammates."

Lorenzi was the Italian junior overall champion and Super-G champion last year. Her sister Lucrezia, also a competitive alpine skier, mourned the loss on her Instagram Stories. "With great sorrow I announce that our Mati has left us," she wrote, detailing where fans in Italy can pay their respects this week.
