Photos Show Aftermath of Tesla Flying Over Pool, Crashing Into Kitchen

As families across the country prepare to gather around the Thanksgiving dinner table, it's unlikely they're thinking about their cooking process being interrupted by a car crashing into the kitchen. But a woman in San Mateo, CA managed to destroy a neighbor's kitchen while behind the wheel of a Tesla just in time for the big food-centered holiday.

It happened when an unnamed 70-year-old driver lost control of her daughter's Tesla Model X. Jerami Surratt, a public information officer for the San Mateo Police Department, told People in a statement that the driver admitted "she was unfamiliar with driving this car and has not driven in about a year." He added that she believed "there might have been an issue with the car," as witnesses who saw the incident happen claimed the vehicle was moving slowly then rapidly accelerated before the crash.

"When the driver lost control of the vehicle, the car drove over a curb and through the driveway of a neighbor's home, then through a fence that separated the two properties," Surratt said. "The fence and back of the house is approximately 40 feet." He estimated the car "probably flew 40 to 50 feet through the air" above a neighbor's pool before crashing into their kitchen

The homeowners, meanwhile, were counting their blessings as no one in the house or the car was hurt. Meredith Donato, the owner's daughter, told KTVU that it could've been disastrous if it had happened any other day.

"If my mother was in the house, she would absolutely have been drinking her tea at 7 a.m. in the kitchen," she said. "There's obviously property damage, but at the end of the day, it's just stuff."

Donato's sister Doria Charlson received a security notification on her phone that someone had broken into the house when the crash happened. She was just as shocked as everyone else by what happened.

"I’ve lived here for almost 30 years and have had no cars flying into our backyard before," she stated plainly. "Overwhelmingly, our family is just really glad that no one got hurt, which is pretty miraculous if you saw the car behind me."

Seems like Tesla might be able to claim that they're responsible for the world's first-ever flying car
