Among the celebrities and fashion icons at Met Gala's 2023 'Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty' event on Monday night was an unexpected visitor: a cockroach.
The unruly carpet crasher was spotted by members of the press, giving the stars in attendance a classic New York City welcome. With camera phones in hand, onlookers followed along as the high-fashion insect traipsed along the white, blue, and red carpet:

Naturally, social media had a field day with the unexpected interloper:

Unfortunately for the six-legged scene-stealer, its reign as a guerrilla-style icon was cut short soon after, when it was seen squished on the carpet underneath someone's undoubtedly expensive heel. Variety even memorialized its short life on Twitter:

The cockroach wasn't the only creature seen on the carpet last night. Jared Leto came dressed as Karl Lagerfeld's Instagram-famous cat Choupette, complete with a full-body cat suit. Rapper Doja Cat similarly dressed as Choupette, donning facial prosthetics to turn her into a feline.
Still, the insect stole the show before it met its demise, trending on Twitter and earning media coverage around the world.
