Over 130,000 Jeep Cherokee SUVs have been recalled over a fire hazard risk, the brand's parent company Stellantis announced this week. Owners have been advised to park their cars outside in the meantime to avoid fire threats to buildings, garages, and other structures.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the recall affects certain Jeep Cherokees from model years 2014–2016. The total number of vehicles affected is 132,099, many of which were previously subject to a recall in 2015.
According to regulators, the Jeep Cherokees in question suffer from a potential electrical short in the power gate lift module, which could lead to fires whether or not the key is in the ignition. This is due to a defect that could cause water to leak inside.
"Owners should park their vehicles outside and away from structures and other vehicles until the recall has been remedied," says the NHTSA notice. "According to the manufacturer, that remedy is currently under development."

Stellantis has identified 50 customer assistance records, 23 warranty claims, and 21 field reports that could be related to the issue, but said it isn't aware of any injuries or incidents related to the issue.
Owners can check if their vehicle is affected on the NHTSA website or by calling 888-327-4236 and entering their vehicle's 17-digit identification number. The company's recall number is 49A. Stellantis has already begun notifying dealers, and will send letters to owners beginning June 30.
In the meantime, safety first. Park your affected cars outside and away from buildings.
