Tina Turner, an icon of the music industry who stands as one of the most popular recording artists of all time, has died, her publicist Bernard Doherty announced in a statement. She was 83 years old, and passed away at her home in Küsnacht, Switzerland.
"It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Tina Turner. With her music and her boundless passion for life, she enchanted millions of fans around the world and inspired the stars of tomorrow. Today we say goodbye to a dear friend who leaves us all her greatest work: her music. All our heartfelt compassion goes out to her family. Tina, we will miss you dearly," the statement reads.
Turner was born in Tennessee, the daughter of sharecroppers, and first rose to fame as part of the Ike and Tina Turner Revue alongside her soon-to-be-husband Ike Turner. An opening slot on a Rolling Stones tour helped them reach a wider audience; the Turners earned their first Top 10 hit with a cover of Creedence Clearwater Revival's "Proud Mary" in 1971, for which they earned a Grammy for Best R&B Vocal Performance by a Duo or Group.
Their tumultuous marriage ended in divorce in the late 1970s, hindering Ms. Turner's career for a number of years. Her 1984 album Private Dancer served as a comeback moment, going 5x Platinum and spawning worldwide hits like "What's Love Got to Do With It."
She would go on to become of the most popular and commercially successful recording artists of all time, playing for crowds that sometimes numbered in the hundreds of thousands across the globe, winning 12 Grammy awards, and selling over 100 million records worldwide.
