Richard Branson Announces Shocking Family Death

Richard Branson is mourning the death of his wife, Joan.

The billionaire businessman took to Instagram on Tuesday to announce that his wife and partner of 50 years has died. She was 80. Branson, 75, did not disclose the cause of death.

Branson Shares Heartbreaking Message

"Heartbroken to share that Joan, my wife and partner for 50 years, has passed away. She was the most wonderful mum and grandmum our kids and grandkids could have ever wished for," he wrote in his caption, paying homage to her. "She was my best friend, my rock, my guiding light, my world. Love you forever, Joan x."

Joan was previously married to her childhood sweetheart in 1966, but they divorced in 1978. Joan met Branson in 1976 at his Virgin Records studio. They would go on to tie the knot in 1989 at Branson's Necker Island in the British Virgin Islands. They share two children.

It seems as though Branson knew Joan's death was on the horizon. Just one day ago, he took to social media and posted a photo of the couple laughing and hugging, and Branson raising his fist in the air.

"Love this photo of Joan," he simply captioned the post.

Branson's Previous Tributes

In February 2020, Branson took to his personal blog and paid tribute to Joan in a post dedicated to her.

"I often make up my mind about someone within 30 seconds of meetings them, and I fell for Joan almost from the moment I saw her," he wrote at the time. "Joan was a down-to-earth Scottish lady and I quickly realised she wouldn't be impressed by my usual antics."

He added, "Far beyond record titles, I owe a lot to Joan. She’s my wife of 30 years, partner of 44 years, the mother of our two wonderful children and my constant rock. Joan has always been a steady source of wisdom and has played no small part in some of my better life decisions. In fact, I owe Necker Island to Joan."
