Melissa Hortman Posted Now Heartbreaking Tribute to Husband

One year before they would be shot to death in what Minnesota's governor is calling a targeted political assassination, state Rep. Melissa Hortman posted a tribute to her husband, Mark, on her Facebook page.

The post, which was accompanied by a photo showing the couple together, is now heartbreaking in light of the chilling sequence of events outlined by Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz and police. They say the Hortmans were shot to death inside their Brooklyn Park, MN, on June 14 by a gunman impersonating a police officer. He also shot and wounded state Sen. John Hoffman and his wife Yvette and remains at large.

Vance Luther Boelter, 57, a former appointee of Gov. Tim Walz, was named as the suspect by the New York Post, which cited sources.

Both Hortmans filled their social media pages with photos showing them together. They also had two children.

On Aug. 13, 2024, Melissa Hortman posted a photo showing her and Mark standing in front of a waterfall.

"Happy 31st Anniversary, Mark Hortman! Isn’t it romantic to mow the grass & wait for primary results? So glad to be together, whether we’re chasing waterfalls in Scotland or right here on the couch," she wrote.

Her only more recent public post is for a fundraiser.

Mark Hortman also posted photos showing him with his wife.

Five years ago, a woman wrote on the comment thread under a photo Melissa Hortman posted showing her husband and two kids, "I love this picture, I miss all my family, stay safe and healthy."

Melissa Hortman also had a political page on Facebook. Her top post was on June 4 and read, "DFLers are fighting to put more power in the hands of Minnesotans and build a future where workers, families, and small businesses have a real chance to succeed."

All of the victims were members of the Democratic-Farm-Labor party of Minnesota. The gunman has not yet been publicly named.

On May 12, she wrote, "Big news: I’m taking on a new role as Secretary of Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee's Board of Directors! In the years I’ve served on the board, I’ve enjoyed working with this team to build new Democratic majorities in states across the country, and I’m excited to keep up the work!"

Melissa Hortman was an attorney. Her legislative biography describes her as "Rep. Melissa Hortman (DFL) District: 34B. Speaker Emerita, DFL Leader."
