The on-screen relationship between Sue Storm and Reed Richards in the Fantastic Four movies is integral to the series. Thankfully, Vanessa Kirby and Pedro Pascal were very much aware of that and have gone to great lengths to ensure it hits on all cylinders.
Ahead of the release of Fantastic Four: First Steps, Kirby opened up about how much time and effort the duo put into their relationship. They built their chemistry both on and off the screen, and did so for months before filming the movie.
As Collider revealed, Kirby gave specific details during a roundtable about how much went into building her bond with Pascal for Fantastic Four: First Steps.
“It’s been so easy,” Kirby said of working with Pascal. “We met months before, we wanted to do this together. We spent time, we did some workshops together. We did everything to bond prior to [filming], because when you read the comics, you’re just like ‘These two, man, they have lasted the course for some really hard stuff.’”
Kirby called it an "iconic relationship" and detailed the importance of making it as "real" as possible.
“And you know, I always find in onscreen relationships, to believe it, you have to answer the question ‘Why?’ You have to know why, not just, ‘Oh, those two actors are together, or those two characters belong together,’ and we’re told that. I get the pull, and even though they go through hard times, they keep coming back together. In the comics, to me, it always appeared like one of those really iconic relationships, but believable because it wasn’t a fantasy. It was just real.”
Kirby explained that she wanted to create that "deep [bond] as friends and creative partners," as Collider detailed.
It's an interesting evaluation of the work both Kirby and Pascal have put in together to make the iconic superheroes' on-screen bond truly stand out.
Fantastic Four: First Steps will hit theaters on July 25, 2025.
