Los Angeles is losing one of its most iconic and historic restaurants later this summer as the popular celebrity haunt is closing its doors after 42 years.
Last week, the legendary original West Hollywood location of Chin Chin restaurant announced that it is officially closing its doors next month.
"After 45 unforgettable years in West Hollywood, we are heartbroken to announce that Chin Chin will be unexpectedly closing its doors at our Sunset Plaza location and will begin the search for a new home. Our final day of service at this beloved location will be Sunday, July 27th," the restaurant wrote in a post on Instagram.
"Over the decades, we’ve celebrated countless milestones, shared unforgettable meals, and built lasting connections with our cherished guests. None of this would have been possible without your unwavering support, and for that, we are deeply grateful."
For decades, the restaurant was a popular celebrity spot on Sunset Plaza as it helped bring Chinese American cuisine to America after it opened in 1983, when founder Bob Mandler helped bring dim sum and Cantonese specialties to the United States.
A representative for the restaurant told the L.A. Times that the building’s landlord chose not to continue their lease arrangement for the legendary location.
“At the last minute I think the landlord had a change in vision for the place, and as much as we wanted to be part of that, Chin Chin just wasn’t part of their vision,” David Choi, a partner in the restaurant, told the Los Angeles Times. “It was just a very sudden change, and so we were kind of left scrambling.”
Chin Chin does have two other locations in the area, in Brentwood and Studio City, and is hoping to reopen the West Hollywood location elsewhere, but this marks the end of a historic and legendary location.
