Man Arrested After Father's Decapitated Head Seen in YouTube Video

A Pennsylvania man who was an apparent QAnon believer was arrested on Tuesday night after allegedly killing his father and decapitating the man's body. He then waved his father's head around in a YouTube video manifesto in which he railed against the United States government, among other grievances.

Justin Mohn, 33, has been charged with first-degree murder, abuse of a corpse, and possessing an instrument of crime with intent after police found the dismembered body of his 68-year-old father, Michael Mohn. Officers responded to a 911 call placed by the victim's wife around 7 p.m. from the couple's Middletown Township, Bucks County home, according to 6 ABC News, after she arrived home to find her husband beheaded and covered in blood.

At the scene, officers discovered the victim's body in a bathroom on the first floor, along with a machete and a large kitchen knife left in the bathtub. A police affidavit stated that his head had been placed in a plastic bag inside a cooking pot, which was found in a first floor bedroom. Officers also located bloody rubber gloves in a bedroom on the second floor.

Though Mohn initially fled the scene, he was later picked up about 100 miles away near a National Guard training facility in Harrisburg, PA.

In the 14-minute YouTube video titled "Mohn's Militia—Call to Arms for American Patriots," which was quickly removed from the platform, Mohn was seen holding his father's decapitated head inside the plastic bag and identifying him by name. The head was also seen stewing inside the pot in another part of the video, which was posted around 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday.

Reading from a written manifesto on his computer screen, Mohn claimed to be a commander of America’s network of militias, ranting against migrants, the Biden administration, the LGBTQIA community, the Black Lives Matter movement, and "far-left woke mobs."

"He is now in hell for an eternity as a traitor to his country," he said of his father. Mohn also called for the killing of other federal officials, including FBI agents, IRS employees, U.S. Marshals, federal judges, and border control officers "for betraying their country," per the New York Post.

Before the killing, Mohn had previously filed at least three lawsuits against various federal agencies over his student loan debt. Court filings state that in at least one of the lawsuits Mohn argued that he had "negligently and fraudulently" been coerced to take out loans for his Penn State University education, which he then couldn't to pay back as a result of being "unable to secure a job commensurate with his education."

Mohn graduated in 2014 with a degree in agribusiness management, and was later apparently forced to move back into his parent’s home due to his lack of employment.

"As far as the crime itself, it's not something we typically see here," Middletown Township Police Captain Pete Feeney said of the gruesome incident.

Jake Gyllenhaal Offers a Peek at His ‘Road House’ Training Regimen

Jake Gyllenhaal took to Instagram to share some photos of his training regimen from Amazon’s upcoming remake of Road House. Doug Liman (Mr. & Mrs. Smith) directs the reimagining of the classic Patrick Swayze fight movie, which sees Gyllenhaal’s disgraced MMA fighter attempting to rescue a small town from a deranged Conor McGregor. The film, which also stars Jessica Williams (Booksmart) and Billy Magnussen (No Time to Die), was shot throughout 2023 in the Dominican Republic.

“We had an incredible crew on this film and an amazing team capturing images and video throughout our time in the DR! So much more to come,” Gyllenhaal promised in the post’s caption.

The first snap shows Gyllenhaal posing for a selfie with a group of stunt fighters who worked on the film’s strenuous action sequences. Subsequent shots show Gyllenhaal doing some quick exercises between scenes, squeezing in a few push-ups outside in the back of a soundstage; and doing boxing training. He’s also pictured submerged in a makeshift ice bath within what appears to be a storage crate. The final photo shows a ripped Gyllenhaal taking a rest on set while filming one of his MMA fights early on in the movie.

Though it certainly appears Gyllenhaal gave his all to ensure the fight scenes were realistic, original Road House star Marshall Teague isn’t so sure. Teague played a goon who was memorably relieved of his throat when battling Swayze. He said that “the hits sounded different” to him in the remake, noting that in the original he and Swayze “hit each other pretty hard throughout that fight, throughout the movie for that matter…We poleaxed each other, basically.”

2024’s Road House debuts on Prime Video on March 21. Check out the trailer below.

Restaurant Review: Avartana Brings Its Soulful South Indian Experiments To Mumbai

I never knew I would enjoy rasam poured from a French press into a Martini glass. I didn't realise my papad could lend amazing crunch to my dessert. I never imagined I'd taste doodhi in the form of spaghetti. This was until I dined at Avartana at ITC Maratha in Mumbai. My recent meal at the preview of ITC's flagship contemporary South Indian restaurant was eye-opening in more ways than one. The original Avartana at ITC Grand Chola in Chennai was ranked 30th among Asia's 50 Best Restaurants in 2023. It was one of only three Indian restaurants to be featured on the prestigious list. Its Mumbai outpost continues its legacy of celebrating the mystical yet modern aromas from Southern India.

Avartana offers five tasting menus, each inspired by different motifs and storytelling objectives: the seven-course Maya (mystical), the nine-course Bela (beautiful), the chef-special eleven-course Jiaa (soulful), the thirteen-course Anika (grace) and the thirteen-course seafood special Tara (sparkling). At the preview, we enjoyed a selection of dishes from each menu, aptly united under the title of "Kimaya" (divine). We had chosen to try the vegetarian menu and were pleased to note that the variety and ingenuity were equally matched with that of the non-veg section.

The amuse bouche was a mini Potato Nest topped with a pineapple and mint sphere. It broke apart with satisfying crispiness, flooding our palette with a refreshing burst of flavour. The first true taste of Avartana's signature style was in the Distilled Tomato Rasam that followed. The broth was poured over fresh coriander leaves and cherry tomatoes in a French press. It was then served to us in Martini glasses. Two sips were all that were needed to convince us - we could have this every day! The understated heat of the black pepper and the smoothness of the rasam combined to give it a uniquely healing effect.

The rasam epitomised the delightful balance that Avartana manages to master - the presentation of ingredients is unfamiliar, but the taste is undeniably wholesome. The dishes are experiments with a soul. They are not fancy reinterpretations that confound and leave one scrambling to find a silver lining. Creativity and thoughtfulness radiate from the menu, plating, service and decor.

Tempered Bottle Gourd. Photo Credit: Avartana

After making a mental note to request rasam refills, we began with the courses. For vegetarians, the first to arrive was the Tempered Bottle Gourd. The humble doodhi was virtually unrecognisable on my plate in its spaghetti-like avatar. I was almost suspicious. This feeling of unfamiliarity is a contrived one, Chef Deepti Jadhav tells us. She explains that Avartana aims to create that vague dissonance between the conventional and the unconventional. It is not here to deliver what we are "used to". It is here to challenge our notions of what these simple, everyday ingredients can be turned into. But once you dig in, Chef Deepti assures us, you'll find the roots.

Drumstick Dumpling

She was not wrong. The dish in front of us was made of doodhi. But we had a newfound appreciation for its texture and coolness. We (delicately) slurped it down with plum chutney and a multi-seed crisp. The Andhra mango ginger used to flavour the gourd is one of several hyperlocal ingredients that the restaurant takes pride in including. Several of the key ingredients are directly sourced from the Southern regions, as the team wants to replicate the charm of the original Avartana, Chef Deepti clarifies. The next novelty was the Drumstick Dumpling with moringa broth. Indians are no strangers to different vegetable stuffings inside dumplings and dim sums. Although uncommon, let us tell you, that the choice of a drumstick filling, like this one, works marvellously.

Next, we feasted with childlike enthusiasm on the perfectly Crispy Chilli Potato - who could resist? It was spiced with Andhra-style vepudu masala and adorned with a buttermilk sphere. Another favourite was the Asparagus & Coconut Stew served with Idiyappam. Asparagus is not something one would usually find on South Indian menus. Chef Nikhil Nagpal, the brand custodian, explained how the vegetable was chosen for its ability to keep the focus on the flavours of the stew. Additionally, we discovered that the stringy idiyappams pair quite well with the crunch of asparagus too.

The ambience provided a harmonious backdrop to our culinary experiences. The banana leaf - the quintessential South Indian symbol - is a recurrent motif incorporated into the decor. The bright lighting is meant to represent the vibrant sunlight that graces the Southern states. The flooring has been inspired by traditional designs found in temples over there. The chandelier brings to mind the design of the cove of houseboats on the backwaters of Kerala. The crockery also serves as a reminder of the restaurant's roots. Some of the courses are plated on granite serving dishes sourced directly from Mahabalipuram. One of the more colourful pieces is crafted with resin from Pondicherry. Diners can thus expect a genuinely holistic experience.

As we savoured the courses, we sipped on a wonderful mocktail called Pickle Jar - a concoction of raw mango, celery, coriander and lime juice, with a hint of red chilli powder. It was slightly tangy and wholly refreshing and didn't go overboard with sourness. We loved the touch of serving it in a glass that actually resembled a pickle jar. The same can be said of the exquisite lemon leaf sorbet, which was served next as the palate cleanser.

Spinach And Curd Cheese. Photo Credit: Avartana

Our enjoyment of the meal did not waver at any point. We were fascinated yet again by the delectable transformation of an everyday veggie when the Spinach And Curd Cheese arrived. The green leaves were shaped like a potli and enclosed a yummy dahi tempered with mustard seeds and onion. It was served with an aerated rice cake and South Indian-style salsa. The dish as a whole was unlike any palak sabzi or snack we've tasted. Even picky eaters won't complain about greens in this delicious form.

Uthukuli Morel. Photo Credit: Avartana

The next course was all about indulgence. The Uthukuli Morel was among the most memorable parts of our evening. The rich sauce pays homage to Uthukuli, a small town in Tamil Nadu renowned for its butter. It is served with butter toffee and mini Malabar parottas, which were also slathered with butter. This was the only course that felt heavier on the system but we had no regrets. The flakiness of the parottas and the exquisite amount of butter, when relished in such a setting, reminded us of the decadence of croissants and fine French pastries. But there was something special about seeing an Indian indulgence in the spotlight in this specific manner.

Jackfruit Rice with Okra Yogurt

Jackfruit Rice with Okra Yogurt. Photo Credit: Avartana

After this buttery binge, the Jackfruit Rice, steamed in a banana leaf, had a grounding effect. The jackfruit was beautifully cooked and fell apart easily as we scooped up the rice and okra yoghurt. The delicacy has a hometown feeling attached to it. Even if you're not from the South, the dish seems like one you would eat and cherish at a grandparents' house.

Raw Mango Pudding with Ghee Candle. Photo Credit: Avartana

Both the dessert courses we tasted had theatrical elements to them. Flavour continued to reign, so we could not complain. The Raw Mango Pudding comes with a ghee candle that can be actually lit. As it melts, it lends the sweet a quick jolt of warmth. Ensure you quickly crush the accompanying papad over it and relish the pudding.

Fennel Panna Cotta

Fennel Panna Cotta. Photo Credit: Avartana

The next course was more hands-on. The Fennel Panna Cotta is designed like a bird's nest. The sparkly nest is crafted with caramelised sugar and shelters a sweet, scrumptious egg. The egg 'white' is the panna cotta, while the shell is made of cocoa butter. There's a yolk as well, made using mango and ginger puree. A small hammer is used to crack the egg and out flows the yolk! It's a pleasing visual spectacle; but even if you're not impressed, the mastery demonstrated in the balance of sweetness will win you over.

Avartana breathes magic into mundane ingredients at every step. We often compare a fantastic dining experience to a journey filled with discovery and adventure. This metaphor has never been more fitting than in the case of Avartana, Mumbai. We would gladly retrace our steps and make the voyage again.

  • Where: Avartana, ITC Maratha, Mumbai - A Luxury Collection Hotel, Sahar Airport Road, Andheri East, Mumbai - 400099 (Near International Airport, Ashok Nagar)
  • When: Dinner Only All Days, 7:00 pm to 11:00 pm (Prior Table Bookings with Menu Preference are recommended)
  • Price: INR 2500 - 4750 plus taxes, per guest, depending on the course selected.

Man Dies After Cooking and Eating Highly Poisonous Pufferfish

A Brazilian man tragically died after he cooked and ate a remarkably venomous pufferfish given to him as a gift. 46-year-old Magno Sergio Gomes, of Aracruz, Espirito Santa, died 35 days after consuming the fish, which contained enough venom to kill 30 human adults. His sister, Myrian Lopes, spoke to newswire service Newsflash (via The Mirror and The New York Post).

It’s unknown where the fish came from, but Brazil is home to more than 20 species of pufferfish. A dozen of them reside in Espirito Santa alone. Gomes noted that her brother had never cleaned pufferfish before.

About 45 minutes after eating, "Magno started to feel numb in his mouth,” Lopes recounted. “Then he went with his wife to the hospital, driving his car. When he got there, his mouth was even more numb, and he felt sick. Soon after, he had a cardiac arrest that lasted eight minutes.”

Magno fell into a coma, suffering several seizures in the next three days. He hung on for 35 days before he ultimately passed away. "The doctors told our family that he died from poisoning, which had quickly traveled to his head," Lopes said. She reported the seizures had "greatly affected his brain, leaving little chance of recovery.”

Gomes’ friend was similarly incapacitated after the meal, but he miraculously survived. Despite being released from the hospital, Lopes says he’s still regaining all of his functions. “With his legs, he's not walking very well. He was neurologically impacted, but he is recovering," she said.

Pufferfish contain tetrodotoxin, which can be up to 1,200 times as poisonous as cyanide for humans, according to National Geographic. Maritime expert Joao Luiz Gasparini told Brazilian media that their venom can cause “cardiorespiratory arrest when ingested in large quantities."

In 2019, five people died and another 10 were hospitalized after eating pufferfish they had caught from a local pond.

We Tested 16 New Balance Running Shoes. These Are the Best

Aside from churning out some of the best-looking running shoes on the market, New Balance innovates alongside heavy hitters like Nike and Adidas. It hasn't shied away from implementing the latest tech, like ultra-light foams and carbon plates, while maintaining its heritage comfort and throwback vibe.

And what makes New Balance so widely appealing is the fact that it makes great shoes for every runner. Whether you are an elite marathoner or someone who jogs a few miles per week, the brand doesn't feel exclusionary or niche. Its everyday trainers are versatile and durable—and its racers are comfortable, accessible, and lightning quick.

Men’s Journal aims to feature only the best products and services. If you buy something via one of our links, we may earn a commission.

Best Overall New Balance Running Shoe: FuelCell SuperComp Rebel v4

FuelCell SuperComp Rebel v4

Nathan Lemin

The latest New Balance FuelCell SuperComp Rebel v4 is my early pick for best running shoe of the year. While previous versions of this shoe have varied in quality, the v4 nestles perfectly into the daily trainer category.

While some folks want niche offerings and multiple shoes for different efforts, I’m a big fan of versatility and value. That’s where the Rebel v4 shines. The shoe is peppy but not at the sacrifice of comfort. It’s nimble but doesn’t forgo stability. It’s fast and light but doesn’t cost a fortune. I took the Rebel v4 out on an easy 10K that ended with some interval speed work. I re-laced them once early on, then they stayed snug and felt great, even late in the effort. When I turned on the jets for some faster running, the extreme lightness of these shoes was really noticeable. Late into high intensity workouts, I notice things like energy return, smoothness of transition, and weight, and the Rebel v4 performed as hoped.

One of the shoe’s most direct competitors, the Asics NovaBlast 4, can't quite match the pep or the lightness of the Rebel v4, and while I also love that shoe, I think this New Balance offering narrowly beats it. And for $140 this shoe offers more performance and more comfort than competitors. If you're looking for a racing and training combo, the Rebel v4 and Elite v4 pair perfectly.

Pros:

  • Capable and versatile for a great price.
  • One of the lightest and most fun daily trainers I’ve tested.
  • Updated PBA x EVA foam blend balances cushion, durability, and bounce.
  • High stack height and sole width creates smooth, stable ride.
  • Soft and comfortable FantomFit upper.
  • Durable outsole rubber.

Cons:

  • Foot slips out of shoe, despite gusseted tongue.
  • Not the beefiest heel counter for a daily trainer.

Weight: 7.1 ounces (size 9)

Heel-Toe Drop: 6 mm

The New Balance Rebel v4 launches on March 1, 2024.

Best New Balance Running Shoe for Daily Training: Fresh Foam X 1080v13

Fresh Foam X 1080v13

The Men’s Journal test team has been loving the latest 1080 for nearly a year. New Balance claims if it only made a single shoe, this would be the one—and it’s not hard to see why. It packs a ton of versatility and performance into a sleek, lightweight package.

The 1080v13 utilizes New Balance’s latest Fresh Foam X, which our team found to be super soft underfoot. It excels as an everyday trainer, so if you can only buy one running shoe at a time, the 1080 is an excellent option.

The 1080v13 was one of my go-to shoes for easy miles, recovery runs, and threshold efforts. A member of our test team said it moved ahead of the SC Trainer v2 (mentioned below) as his favorite New Balance trainer.

Pros:

  • Midsole, upper, and lacing all fit and feel great.
  • Lightweight for the amount of cushion.
  • Outsole performs well on wet terrain and light trails.
  • Looks good

Cons:

  • Not quite as responsive as the previous version.
  • Plushness isn’t for everyone.

Best New Balance Marathon Racing Shoe: FuelCell SuperComp Elite v4

FuelCell SuperComp Elite v4

Courtesy Image

Just as exciting as the competition to break the marathon records is the race for the best super shoe among major companies. The team at New Balance had an excellent, accommodating racer in the FuelCell SuperComp Elite v3, but they elevated to a new level with v4.

The foam used for these shoes feels softer out of the box than competitors. There's a meaningful squish in the Elite v4, and the bounce back is superb. Speeding up was effortless, but going slow feels good too. While other super-shoes cut weight at the expense of utility and comfort, the upper on this New Balance FC SC Elite v4 is really comfortable—although slightly warmer than competitors. I also love the fit, as the shoe didn't take long to break-in.

The only issue I experienced with these shoes is that the tongue and laces loosened up over the course of my run. I retied them three times over a 10 mile run. Obviously that would be an issue in a race, but I plan to make this my racing shoe this year anyway. I was able to keep them snug using a tight surgeon’s knot at the top (looping your initial single knot an extra time or two), and if you had enough laces, a runner’s loop would likely work too.

Pros:

  • More comfortable and approachable out of the box than other elite racing shoes
  • Incredible energy return.
  • Stable and tacky for a high-stack racing shoe.

Cons:

  • Laces and tongue loosen while running, leading to some heel slippage.
  • Soft outsole doesn’t seem very durable.
  • Upper is a bit warmer than competitors.

Best Long-Distance New Balance Running Shoe: FuelCell SuperComp Trainer v2

Courtesy Image

The SuperComp Trainer v2 was one of my favorite shoes last summer. They are peppy, comfortable, and look great. Whenever I had a Sunday long run or fartlek, these were one of my top choices. The combination of soft cushioning and propulsive plate felt comfortable and fast over big miles.

If you want to race in shoes that you can also frequently train in, give the SuperComp Trainer v2 a serious look. At $180 they are somewhat pricey for a trainer, but the ability to train speed and distance as well as race provides excellent value. Plus, for those not keen on carbon plates, the Trainer v2’s plate feels approachable and not as stiff as others. I also found the upper and laces to provide a secure fit.

Unfortunately for folks living on gravel roads, there is a large void in the center of the outsole that exposes the plate, and this gap picks up rocks, which then make a grating noise against the plate. Additionally, the outsole didn’t hold up as well as we would’ve liked, and I recommend keeping this on pretty smooth tarmac—avoid even light gravel. That said, the performance and comfort are excellent in the Trainer v2, and it is another great shoe in the FuelCell lineup.

Pros:

  • Fun and fast.
  • Comfortable.
  • Versatile, can be used for training and racing.
  • More stable than other long-distance trainers.

Cons:

  • Outsole wears relatively fast.
  • Exposed carbon plate void picks up rocks.

Best Budget New Balance Shoe: Fresh Foam Arishi v4

Courtesy Image

While there is nothing particularly inspiring about the Fresh Foam Arishi v4, for $70 you get a perfectly capable and solid looking shoe. It makes an excellent walking shoe or travel shoe, as the simple lines and lightweight comfort are solid for all-day wear.

However, I didn’t love running more than three miles in the Arishi. The laces don’t come up very high on the shoe, so I didn't feel secure. However, I wore these all day around town for a weekend and like them for walking and as a pair of casual shoes, as they're easy to slip on and off. While I wouldn’t recommend these to a serious runner, I do think they make a versatile pair of travel shoes, especially if you want to go on a couple runs when you're on the go.

Pros:

  • Affordable.
  • Comfortable to walk in and run short distances.
  • Lightweight.
  • Durable, grippy outsole.

Cons:

  • Poor lacing system doesn't lock your foot in.
  • Cushioning doesn’t hold up to longer distances

Best Max-Cushion New Balance Running Shoe: Fresh Foam X More v4

Courtesy Image

If you like soft cushioning, then the Fresh Foam X More v4 should be in your shoe rotation. I’ve never run in shoes as soft and squishy. That’s not for everyone, but for easy efforts, the considerable shock absorption make for a total comfort ride.

When you run, you exert a huge amount of force on your body. That isn’t always comfortable, especially if you’re heavier. A well-cushioned shoe that doesn’t feel clunky or heavy is hard to come by, so New Balance has made a compelling max cushion shoe with the latest FFX More v4.

Pros:

  • Soft underfoot.
  • Surprisingly lightweight.
  • Super stable, great for heavier runners.
  • Tacky and durable outsole.

Cons:

  • Struggled to lock in fit with loose, stretchy material.
  • Zaps energy return, especially on dead legs.
  • Not versatile.

Best New Balance Trail Running Shoe: Fresh Foam X More Trail v3

Courtesy Image

A trail version of the Fresh Foam X More v4 featured above, the Fresh Foam X More Trail v3 is basically a road shoe with bigger lugs tacked on. I often opt for nimble, light trail runners that are pretty stiff because I value rock protection and quick feet when I’m running trails. The More Trail v3 is neither nimble nor stiff, but it provides excellent long-wearing comfort.

Over the course of testing, this became my go-to trail runner for easy miles. I used the More Trail v3 for runs with my dog, flowy single tracks, and other chill trail runs. While it’s not stiff and has no rock plate, the high amount of stack created a protective feel on trail. It felt a bit wide, even in the standard width, so it's hard to lock in fit. And paired with the soft midsole, I occasionally experienced sloppy transitions going into turns and on uneven terrain. Therefore, this isn’t a shoe to run fast in, as the soft feel can slow momentum. Speaking of soft, the Vibram outsole lugs don’t provide full coverage of the midsole, so the exposed foam eventually gets chewed up on sharp rocks, diminishing long-term durability. That said, if you need a max cushion trail shoe, the New Balance Fresh Foam X More Trail v3 was surprisingly sweet.

Pros:

  • Plush ride is ideal for long trail runs and recovery days.
  • Flexible midsole and grippy Vibram lugs combine to create great traction.
  • Available in three widths.
  • Super stable on trail, especially less technical efforts.

Cons:

  • Soft cushioning can slow momentum at times, especially uphill.
  • Not very durable or nimble for a trail shoe.
  • Slightly wide, even in standard width.

Best New Balance Stability Shoe: Fresh Foam X 860v13

Courtesy Image

These days, every running shoe company makes a great stability oriented shoe. New Balance provides overpronators support with their 860 lineup, and the Fresh Foam X 860v13 is a worthwhile iteration of that shoe.

While the More v4 and 1080v13 feel great, they both feature very soft cushioning. For certain runs, especially on varied terrain, I prefer a more solid platform. The 860v13 has a nice balance of stiffness and comfort; it still features the FreshFoam X that makes the 1080 so soft, but also includes some stiffer foam. It fits well right out of the box, with no need for creative lacing. The upper, while a little warm, provides lockdown fit and the stability features felt solid under the inner foot.

Pros:

  • Added rigidity.
  • Supportive medial post works as intended to prevent overpronation.
  • Upper feels really snug and comfortable.
  • Durable and tacky outsole, even on rougher surfaces.

Cons:

  • Not particularly performance-driven.

Why You Should Trust Me

I run in dozens of different running shoes every year. The shoes selected for this roundup by a team of testers and I are the culmination of months of testing. Some of the best New Balance running shoes have been on my feet since early last year, and many of these options are in my full-time, go-to running rotation.

Because I love New Balance so much as a running brand, I have particularly high expectations of its latest shoes and gear. I test all their shoes, especially newer versions of previously-tested models, with a close and critical eye. Their year-over-year improvement is part of why I admire the brand and their shoes as a whole.

I review hundreds of shoes per year, including dozens of pairs of New Balance.

Nathan Lemin

What We Look for When Reviewing Running Shoes

My three go-to questions when testing running shoes are as follows:

  1. Do I want to wear it again?
  2. Is it holding up to frequent wear?
  3. Does it serve its intended purpose?

We here at Men’s Journal seek out durable, comfortable and capable running shoes that perform the job they were designed for. That means a racing shoe should provide speedier transitions, long-wearing comfort and lightweight fit, an everyday trainer should provide durable outsoles, accommodating fit and plenty of support, and a trail running shoe should provide excellent tread and enhanced protection.

In my training and racing efforts, New Balance shoes help me get the most out of my work. I find their shoes fit well, offering a range of widths in many models; they have a soft yet responsive cushioning, especially their FreshFoam X and FuelCell foams; and they look cool, too.

A few of the testers in our team have New Balance shoes in their regular rotation, including former cross-country and track athletes. On tester cited the balance of performance and comfort at a better price than other brands he used to train in. And it’s true, there are a couple shoes in this list that, at their price point, can't be beat by any competitor.

Tiktoker Loses 4 Pounds in 7 Days Eating Only Costco Hot Dogs

A TikTok user claims to have lost over four pounds in one week eating nothing more than Costco’s hot dog combo. Columbus, OH resident Joey Kinsley, who goes by @siryacht on TikTok, actually started his journey as an effort to save money rather than lose weight. Distressed by how expensive food has become, Kinsley set out to see how much money he could save by consuming only Costco’s $1.50 combo, which includes a foot-long dog and a soft drink, for seven straight days.

Over the entire week, Kinsley reported consuming 29 hot dog combos and spending only $43.50. He cites this as being just 25 percent of what the average millennial spends on food each week ($164.82). Culinary brand Home Run Inn reiterates that statistic.

“I also might have started a new diet trend,” Kinsley boasted in one video, “because I lost 4.2 pounds in seven days.”

"The fact I lost 4 pounds was mind-blowing,” he later told Fox Business. “I enjoyed what I ate, and I lost weight, and I was like, ‘I think I might be onto something here.'"

“Surprisingly, I never got sick of eating hot dogs once,” the foodie remarked, noting that he wouldn’t trade the experience for anything. “I balled on a budget, lost weight, and had the culinary experience of a lifetime,” he enthused.

One Costco hot dog contains 560 calories, according to Fat Secret. That means just eating four in one day (as Kinsley did, on average) would give one their recommended daily intake of 2,000 calories.

Whether or not they provide enough proteins and nutrients may be up for debate, but the diet served Kinsley perfectly well. He’s down four pounds, and has memories to last a lifetime. Perhaps for his next trick, he’ll eat Costco’s sushi for a week straight.

Residents of a University of Georgia dorm have been plagued with a bat infestation since returning to campus two weeks ago, and getting rid of the small flying mammals has been easier said than done.

The bats were first discovered at the Ogelthorpe House dorm on Jan. 14, which houses up to 500 students and costs over $3,000 per semester to live in. The bats are believed to have entered the dorm through a mechanical space on the roof of the building where the boilers are housed, and then infiltrating the stairwells. But after they were initially cleared, an additional 25–30 bats were recently discovered in the rafters of the rooftop space, which is not accessible to students.

One student who has seen the bats on several occasions, Eva Sardon, described the situation to Fox 5 News Atlanta as "very alarming." "There was one in the lobby, and it was like on the floor, and then all of a sudden it just got up and started flying at me, so I ran back to my room," Sardon said.

"I don’t know how exterminating works, but I feel like there could be more done," UGA freshman Ella Jones likewise told Atlanta News First. "But they have certain qualifications they can’t do because they’re a protected species. But I go to school here, am I not a protected species? I sure hope I am."

Indeed, the fact that the bats are a protected species is making the situation even more complicated. Linda Kasper, executive director of university housing, explained that pest control has been attempting to carefully remove the bats without harming them.

"We weren't able to complete that work until the next weekend because we needed to get a lift that could reach the 10th floor of the building, which is the penthouse," Kasper told Fox 5. "We completed that work with sealing all of the holes on Sunday. We expected it would take about three days to remove all the bats because the bats are so small, and they're very good at hiding."

"Yesterday, we found about 30 bats in the morning in the stairwell," she added. "There is still a possibility that there are a few. So, we continue to have pest control here around the clock. They are on call, and we continue to tell students please do not touch the bats."

If students should encounter a bat, they are encouraged to call the front desk or call their resident assistant. Though less than one percent of bats carry rabies, the disease is fatal, and anyone who has come into contact with a bat should seek medical advice.

The Northeast Health District said it is coordinating with the both the Georgia Department of Public Health’s epidemiology unit and the University of Georgia to carry out a risk assessment.

"Whether post‐exposure rabies vaccination would be recommended for an individual depends on a number of factors, and completing the assessment will allow public health officials to make recommendations and connect individuals to appropriate care, if needed, based on their specific circumstances," the agency said in a statement.

Give A Twist To The Plain Dhoklas With This Dhokla Katori Chaat Recipe

When discussing Indian street food, one cannot overlook chaat. This quick-fix delight combines crispy fried dough, boiled potatoes, chickpeas, and flavorful chutneys, creating a medley of sweet, sour, and spicy tastes. Fresh coriander and crunchy sev on top add the perfect finishing touch. Chaat comes in various forms, such as papdi chaat, samosa chaat, aloo chaat, corn chaat, palak patta chaat, and katori chaat. However, in today's era of culinary innovation, traditional snacks often undergo modern fusions. In a recent video shared by Food Blogger Meghana Kadu, a new kind of chaat takes the spotlight – Dhokla Katori Chaat. Yes, you read that correctly. After witnessing the preparation of this dish in the video, the online foodie community is delighted with this inventive creation.

In the video, the Food Blogger begins by using a steel bowl and placing a small, upside-down glass bowl inside it. She proceeds to fill the steel bowl with dhokla batter and then positions the entire setup in a steamer. Once the dhokla is thoroughly cooked, she removes it from the steamer. Thanks to the small inverted glass bowl, the dhokla now has a well-like hollow structure. To enhance the flavour and texture, Meghana Kadu fills this dhokla hollow with various ingredients. First, she adds ragda, a preparation made with boiled white peas with turmeric powder, garlic cloves, and salt. Next in line is a generous layer of thick yoghurt. Tamarind and green chutneys are then drizzled on the top. After that, the dish is garnished with a generous amount of crunchy sev and fresh coriander leaves.

Buffalo Trace Lends Beloved Bourbon Flavors to 6 Limited-Edition Tequilas

Tequila aged in bourbon barrels is nothing new. Bourbon can only be aged in new American white oak barrels, so when these distilleries finish aging their bourbons, they sell the used barrels to distilleries across the globe. From Ireland and Scotland to Barbados and Mexico, bourbon barrels are the go-to for maturing brown spirits.

Inside these casks, notes of the former spirits linger, passing touches of flavor onto the next spirit that enters the cask. While most of the barrels used for these soon-to-be brown spirits come from mass-produced whiskeys, Corazón Tequila and Buffalo Trace wondered, what might happen if barrels used for some of the world’s most-beloved bourbons were used to age high-end tequila instead? Enter Expresiones del Corazón Collection.

Launched in 2021, the two Sazerac Company-owned brands continue to grow this project each year with ongoing success. They’ve just unveiled the latest limited-edition collection, which includes two brand new añejos aged in French Oak and ex-Weller 12-Year-Old Bourbon barrels, in addition to the award-winning Artisanal Blanco and William Larue Weller, George T. Stagg and Sazerac 18-Year-Old Rye Añejo Tequilas, which are featured again as part of this year’s Collection.

The collection celebrates the excellence that goes into making spirits, whether that’s distillation, aging, or hard-to-define experimentation. Overall, things are pretty simple conceptually: Corazón’s premium tequila is aged in barrels that once held some of the world’s most-coveted whiskeys produced at Buffalo Trace Distillery.

The Expresiones del Corazón Collection includes:

  • Corazón Weller 12 Añejo Tequila: Matured for 26 months in ex-Weller 12 Kentucky Straight Bourbon barrels, this moderately sweet añejo features notes of heavily cooked agave, toasted vanilla, oak, and a smooth finish.
  • Corazón French Oak Añejo Tequila: Aged for at least 13 months in French oak barrels that formerly contained Old Charter Oak French Oak bourbon, the resulting liquid delivers aromas of rich oak and vanilla. The palate is smooth and lightly sweet with hints of cooked agave, apple, and caramel.
  • Corazón Sazerac Rye 18 Añejo Tequila: 24 months of aging in barrels that formerly held Sazerac Rye for 18 years produces a moderately sweet tequila with strong notes of fresh fruit, oak, caramel, almond, and cinnamon.
  • Corazón George T. Stagg Añejo Tequila: After spending 22 months maturating in barrels that previously aged the high-proof George T. Stagg bourbon, this tequila delivers salted caramel flavors that burst on the palate followed by notes of charred pineapple that slowly transforms to tobacco, leaving a sweet-yet-smoky flavor on the finish.
  • Corazón William Larue Weller Añejo Tequila: 15 months of aging in barrels that formerly held this beloved wheated bourbon creates a balanced and dense tequila with a hint of sweet undertones. Aromas of wood, caramel, and almond are followed by a palate filled with chocolate, vanilla, nuts, eucalyptus and chamomile.
  • Corazón Artisanal Small Batch Blanco Tequila: This blanco tequila is the base spirit used for the entire Expresiones del Corazón Collection. It's made with artisanal distillation techniques using the finest estate-grown agave and boasts a higher sugar content. The result is an elegant liquid with a sweet, gentle flavor; powerful notes of cooked agave; and hints of citrus and green apple.

Each tequila is sold separately in the Buffalo Trace Antique Collection’s glass bottle, featuring a cork stopper and handwritten label specifying the barrel, bottle number, and date of bottling.

The Expresiones del Corazón Collection is available in limited quantities at select retailers, bars, and restaurants across the United States. The suggested retail price for the Artisanal Blanco is $60, while the William Larue Weller, Weller 12, French Oak, George T. Stagg, and Sazerac Rye 18-Year-Old Añejos have a suggested retail price of $80 each.

New Study Has Bad News for Rural Americans About Hearing Loss

When you think of the big city, you might think of loud noises coming from honking cars and construction sites. While these sounds can be detrimental to your hearing, especially if experienced up close, it turns out being out in the middle of nowhere might be even worse for your ears.

A new study published in The Lancet journal found that hearing loss affects nearly 38 million Americans and is more common in rural areas than urban ones. In addition, the researchers found that hearing loss was more prevalent in men than in women.

The scientists' most reasonable hypothesis for the phenomenon likely involves how loud noises are and how often people hear them. For example, a person in a city who rides the subway can go at least six hours before being at risk for hearing loss. By contrast, hunters who don't wear protection on their ears can damage their hearing with just a few gunshots from their rifles. Consider that other popular forms of entertainment and work in rural areas include woodworking and riding ATVs and you have a recipe for disaster.

"Higher hearing loss prevalence was associated with smaller population size," the study authors wrote of the rural hearing loss phenomenon. "West Virginia, Alaska, Wyoming, Oklahoma, and Arkansas had the highest standardized rate of bilateral hearing loss, and Washington D.C., New Jersey, New York, Maryland, and Connecticut had the lowest."

Location doesn't directly determine your fate when it comes to hearing loss, however. “The number one risk factor for hearing loss is age,” study lead author David Rein told The Associated Press. The highest rates of hearing loss the scientists found were among non-Hispanic white people and those 65 and older.

If you live in a rural area and are exposed to possibly damaging sounds, it might be worth it to invest in some professional-grade earmuffs.

The World's New Top Whiskey Is Also One of Our Favorite Affordable Bourbons

Jim Beam and Jack Daniel’s have long dominated the American whiskey market. Jim Beam and Jack Daniel’s have long dominated the American whiskey world. In pure sales, there’s no competition. Last year, according to The Spirits Business, Jack Daniel’s sold 14.6 million cases, while Jim Beam sold 16.7 million, making them the top two selling whiskey brands on the planet, titles one of the two have held for at least five years. However, that appeal no longer carries over to the bar—and actually it hasn’t for some time.

Every year, liquor industry news outlet Drinks International surveys 100 bars from 33 countries around the world to find out what drinks consumers order. The selected bars have appeared on iconic best-of lists, such as the World’s 50 Best Bars and Tales of the Cocktail Spirited Awards. Then, Drinks International issues its definitive Brands Report. “The report offers a picture of the buying habits of the world’s best bars—not only which brands sell best, but also what’s trending to indicate the brands that are hot right now,” it reads.

The top spot belongs to one of our favorite affordable bourbons, Maker’s Mark—the Kentucky brand with the red wax-covered top—for the second year in a row. Jim and Jack, once go-tos for “a shot and a beer” or mixed drinks, have given way to slightly more expensive brands, as drinkers become more willing to open their pocketbooks or wallets for a more expensive pour (or maybe the patrons of the surveyed bars are willing to shell out more cash).

Related: Best Cheap Whiskey of 2024 for a Great Bottle on a Budget

Either way, America’s giant whiskey duo sits back in seventh and eighth place, despite their long-carried name recognition in the global marketplace:

  1. Maker’s Mark
  2. Bulleit
  3. Michter’s
  4. Woodford Reserve
  5. Buffalo Trace
  6. Wild Turkey
  7. Jim Beam
  8. Jack Daniel’s
  9. Rittenhouse
  10. Four Roses

The growth of Maker’s Mark and other brands has begun to impact Jim Beam's numbers, which sold about 300,000 fewer cases last year than they did the year before. It’s worth noting that Jack Daniel's grew by 7.9 percent last year, but the brand has also stepped into the craft marketplaces with the release of an American Single Malt and the continuation of its successful, experimental Distillery Series. Maker’s Mark, meanwhile, sold 200,000 more cases in 2023 than they did in 2022, an increase of 5.3 percent, although it had a bigger 2022, growing 11.1 percent from 2021.

According to Drinks International's annual American whiskey trends report, that trend should continue. Instead of relying on business data, this report is more subjective, since the bars themselves decide what climbs up the rankings. And while Maker’s might see competition from Michter’s, Jack and Jim don’t even make the list:

  1. Michter‘s
  2. Maker’s
  3. Bulleit
  4. Woodford Reserve
  5. Buffalo Trace
  6. Angel’s Envy
  7. Blanton’s
  8. Wild Turkey
  9. Elijah Craig
  10. Eagle Rare

Regardless, it seems like consumers are willing to spend a bit more on whiskey than they have in the past—and Jim and Jack are being left behind.

Study Ranks the Best and Worst Airlines of 2023

Travelers returned to the skies in a big way in 2023, as air travel finally began to bounce back after the pandemic. Airlines are now pulling out all the stops when vying for passengers, such as expanding premium seating, and the companies' efforts can be seen in the annual ranking of the best and worst airlines by the Wall Street Journal.

For the third year in a row, Delta topped the publication's list, which cited an industry-high 83 percent on-time arrival rate and lowest level of recorded complaints. And following the larger trend which saw flight cancellations in the United States falling to the lowest rate in a decade in 2023, Delta likewise reduced cancellations from nearly two percent in 2022 to 1.2 over the course of the last year.

Alaska Airlines came in second, with ratings coming in before a door plug blowing out on one of its recent flight made headlines. In fact, Alaska Airline could have even surpassed Delta on the list thanks to its strong on-time arrivals and a sub-one percent cancellation rate. However, it scored seventh out of ninth place in baggage handling on the list, bringing down its overall score.

Following Allegiant Air in third place was Southwest in fourth, amid a barrage of bad press in late 2022 stemming from nearly 17,000 canceled flights and countless stranded travelers. The breakdown resulted in a $140 million fine following an in-depth investigation by the the U.S. Department of Transportation last year.

In dead last place was JetBlue, which fell below even budget airlines Spirit and Frontier, in seventh and eighth place, respectively. In addition to an abysmal on-time arrival rate of 66.4 percent, JetBlue managed to receive the lowest scores in cancellations, delays of more than 45 minutes, and tarmac delays.

Though, the airline blamed a variety of extenuating factors for the low ranking, such as weather around New York airports and alleged mismanagement of air traffic control. "We have the highest level of exposure to New York of any airline, and that continues to make an apples-to-apples comparison with other carriers difficult," a spokesperson said in a statement to the WSJ.

You can view the best and worst nine ranked airlines, below:

  1. Delta
  2. Alaska
  3. Allegiant Air
  4. Southwest
  5. American Airlines
  6. United Airlines
  7. Spirit
  8. Frontier
  9. JetBlue
