College Football National Championship Odds Jumbled by Crazy Weekend

A crazy weekend of college football has created a new favorite to win the national championship.  Would the smart money really be on that team to win it all at this point, though?

Here’s a recap of the action and how it impacted the odds:

New-look odds; still all big brands

Ohio State is the new betting favorite to win the 2027 College Football Playoff.

The Buckeyes are at 17/4 odds (+425) after hanging on to beat Indiana on Saturday, a matchup of No. 4 and 5 in the Associated Press poll.

Behind Ohio State, Georgia and Notre Dame are both at 5/1 despite both losing Saturday when five of the top seven in the AP poll lost.

Miami (Fla.) is fourth with 13/2 odds after surviving an overtime clash with rival Florida State, and Indiana comes in at 9/1 to round out the top five.

Here is the top 12 according to BetOnline Sport and Casino:

Why these could change again soon

Ohio State picked up its biggest win of the season Saturday, but the Buckeyes have a major question at quarterback.

Julian Sayin, their second-year starter, will miss “several weeks,” according to head coach Ryan Day after his right (throwing) arm was pinned against his body in a violent hit by an Indiana defender.

Sayin returned to the field with his arm in a sling, but Day did not specify what he was dealing with.

Luke Fahey, a freshman from California, replaced Sayin and looked overwhelmed against the Hoosiers, who have one of the best and most complicated defenses in college football.

He is expected to get the next start for Ohio State at USC. That is not until Oct. 31 because the Buckeyes’ bye is this week.

That means Day and his assistant coaches have some time to prepare Fahey to take the reins of an offense that relies heavily on star receiver Jeremiah Smith and has a below-average running game.

The OSU defense has been on the upswing, though, and ranks in the national top 10 in scoring and total yards allowed.

Stay the course?

More than one of the heavyweights of the sport losing Saturday could make picking a champion easier when all is said and done because they are all facing a reset but very much alive for making the playoff, which will still be 12 teams this season.

It means the teams people already thought were the best are basically still standing on the same ground relative to each other — at least if they still have their starting quarterback.

One-loss Ohio State controls its destiny, but the Buckeyes’ remaining schedule has no easy outs with Nebraska and Northwestern looking improved, USC and Oregon always talented and the old “throw out the records” thing with the Ohio State-Michigan rivalry.
