What Time Does the Stock Market Close on Christmas Eve?

With the holidays upon us, people doom-scrolling at family gatherings, it's bound to happen that you'll want to check on your stocks. And make a trade, too.

With the holidays here, that also means that the stock market hours will change. On Christmas Eve, the New York Stock Exchange and the Nasdaq are set to close at 1 p.m. ET.

The U.S. bond market stays open a little later on Christmas Eve. They will close at 2 p.m. ET.

The Stock Exchange, Nasdaq, and bond markets will reopen on Dec. 26.

New Year's Eve and New Year's Hours

Expect a similar schedule on New Year's Eve, on Wednesday, Dec. 31, when the bond markets are slated to close early at 2 p.m. ET. The New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq, however, will operate their normal hours.

The hours will change again to start the new year, with the stock and bond markets closed on Thursday, January 1, 2026, to observe the New Year's Day holiday.

Wall Street Going 23/5?

Earlier this month, Reuters reported that Nasdaq will file paperwork with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) to "roll out round-the-clock trading of stocks, as it looks to capitalize on a global demand for U.S. equities."

According to the outlet, Nasdaq would remain open 23 hours a day, five days a week. The exchange company currently operates 16 hours a day, five days a week.

If Nasdaq gets approval, it would operate two trading sessions, "with the day session starting at 4 a.m. and ending at 8 p.m., followed by a one-hour break for maintenance, testing, and clearing of trades. The night session will kick off at 9 p.m. and end at 4 a.m. the following calendar day."
