The Macallan's New Whisky Is Limited, Tasty, and Surprisingly Affordable

Jerez, Spain, feels like a place lost in time. Most famously the home to sherry wine, the city has become a capital for drinks lovers looking to dive deeper into the history and flavors of their favorite wines, cocktails, and spirits.

For whisky lovers, the Andalusian town holds particular significance, as it creates and seasons many of the barrels used to mature a variety of the world’s most beloved bottlings. And for brands like The Macallan, it's become a staple.

This year marks the 200th anniversary of The Macallan’s birth, and it's spent 2024 releasing a slew of bottles, including a collaboration with Bentley, and the Time : Space Collection. Now, the Speyside distillery has unveiled the final bicentennial release: A Night on Earth in Jerez de la Frontera, which is also the third release in its A Night On Earth series.

The Macallan A Night On Earth In Jerez De La Frontera celebrates the brand’s long history with the city and its iconic wine. The whisky matured in a combination of European and American Sherry-seasoned oak casks and offers aromas of honey coated Pestiños, sweet raisins, cinnamon, anise, rich oak, and vibrant citrus. The palate features sweet pastry, white grape, honey, almond, and vanilla notes, alongside hints of spices and fresh rosemary. The flavors are said to be inspired by Spanish year-end traditions, such as the custom of eating 12 grapes before the start of the new year, as well as the traditional Jerez pastry, pestiños.

“Jerez plays a crucial role in The Macallan’s past, but also present and future,” says Steven Bremner, the brand's whisky maker. “As a whisky maker, having been able to tell part of that story through a whisky has been wonderfully rewarding. A combination of European and American Sherry-seasoned casks has enabled us to capture the flavors, traditions and María’s memories of New Year in Jerez de la Frontera, the home of sherry wine.”

Like previous editions in the A Night on Earth series, the box and bottle feature unique designs, this time created by Jerez-native artist María Melero. The exterior of the box features a nighttime vineyard landscape with a red sky and a shooting star as well as a protective rose bushes in the lower section. The inside of the box is adorned with illustrations of ‘azulejos,’ traditional Jerez wall tiles, as well as golden grapes from Jerez vineyards. The bottle itself, meanwhile, keeps things simple, with just a protective rosebush drawn on the bottom of the label with the expression’s name listed above.

Bottled at 43 percent ABV, The Macallan A Night on Earth in Jerez de la Frontera is priced at $140 per bottle. For more information, head over to the brand’s official website.
