Earlier this year, a report claimed that Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, who has a reputation of being one of the nicest and hardest-working people in Hollywood, was habitually late to set of his new movie and costing the studio millions. And now, Johnson is clearing the air and pushing back on the allegations.
Back in April, The Wrap reported that the budget of Johnson's Amazon MGM Studios Christmas action-adventure Red One had bloated to more than $250 million due to the 52-year-old's chronic tardiness, among other things. One of the other details of the piece alleged that Johnson would sometimes urinate in empty water bottles to save time. "It was a f–king disaster,” claimed one insider, while another added: "Dwayne truly doesn’t give a f--k."
In a new GQ profile, Johnson denied the reports of habitual latenesses, but did admit that sometimes he does "pee in a bottle" while working. "Yeah. That happens," he told the interviewer.
Though, Johnson did admit to sometimes being tardy, but called the controversy "bulls--t" "Yeah, that happens too," he said. "But not that amount, by the way. That was a bananas amount. That’s crazy. Ridiculous."
Jake Kasdan, the director of Red One, also came to Johnson's defense and claimed that he "never missed a day of work" during the shoot. "He has a lot going on. He can be late sometimes, but such is Hollywood—that’s the case with everybody," Kasdan said. "Honestly, I’ve made three big movies with him. I’ve never seen him be anything but great to every single person on the set."
Johnson's costar Chris Evans likewise expressed that the report did not jibe with his experience working with the wrestler turned actor.
"In terms of the guy that I saw, compared to some of the things I’ve seen on other movies with other actors who are not only not conscious of other people’s time and efforts, but they’re unpredictable? I found Dwayne to be—we all know exactly what he’s going to do when he’s going to do it," Evans remarked. He also clarified the rumor that Johnson's workout schedule was to blame for his latenesses.
"This is something that the producers, the director, and it’s all his team, so they all know this," he continued. "So it’s all basic. It’s not like he’s late unexpectedly, and I wouldn’t even call it late. He comes in slightly later on certain mornings, but it’s part of the plan. It’s worked into the schedules and everyone knows it, so he shows up when he’s scheduled to show up."
Red One, also starring Lucy Liu and J. K. Simmons, hits theaters nationwide on Nov. 15.
