Pro Boxer Dead at 31 in Drive-By Shooting

Mylik Birdsong, a professional boxer known by the name King Mylik, has died at the age of 31 after a drive-by shooting in south Los Angeles

According to the Los Angeles Police Department, the violence transpired Sept. 29 around 4:50 p.m. local time, per KTLA. The authorities said Birdsong was standing outside a car with his girlfriend inside when another vehicle approached them. Shots soon rang out on the street.

"A dark-colored SUV drove by westbound on 87th [Street] and shot at the victim," an LAPD spokesperson told KTLA. "The victim then ran towards his residence [when] two suspects from the vehicle started chasing him while shooting at him."

The boxer suffered seven gunshot wounds to his torso and collapsed to the ground in the driveway. First responders arrived at the scene and rushed him to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Birdsong debuted in 2017 and was the reigning World Boxing Foundation International Welterweight champion at the time of his death. He had an impressive 15-1-1 record with 10 knockouts. His next scheduled fight was against Armenian boxer Gor Yeritsan at a Hollywood Fight Nights event on Oct. 26.

Police are now searching for the two suspects and a motive in the shooting.
