British diver Mark Graham has had quite a summer dodging sharks on the high seas. In the last two months alone, the 31-year-old has weathered two close encounters with the apex predators in South Africa, and caught both of the incidents on video.
Back in May, Graham was leading a group shark tour when a great white jumped an unexpected distance out of the water. As it circled the boat, Graham’s camera tracked the shark underwater, and then above. The shark then crested up from the sea and chomped for a line of bait, getting within inches of the camera.
In the last few days, Graham once again found himself the subject of a curious shark. Astonishing underwater footage recorded on a GoPro Hero strapped to Graham’s head caught exact the moment the shark made contact.
The video began with the massive great white shark passing through the frame. Once the shark noticed Graham, it pivoted its head and then body to face him head-on. As the shark raced toward the camera, it opened its mouth to bare two rows of razor-sharp teeth and a massive, pale tongue.
It was then that the shark bit down on Graham’s head. Luckily, it only took a nibble out of the GoPro, but even that didn’t appear to be harmed.

Graham found that the shark was “super inquisitive” about the camera, which is likely the reason it approached him in the first place. “Their electro receptors can pick up the GoPro so they get super curious and come in close to investigate,” Graham told The New York Post.
Although the footage of a shark racing towards him appeared to be terrifying, Graham says that he felt no fear during the encounter. “It was an incredibly gentle interaction from the shark. It was just trying to figure out what the strange electrical thingy in the water was.”
Ultimately, Graham feels lucky that he’s able to have such close and respectful interactions with sharks, while lightly pushing back on those who claim the footage depicts a fearful encounter. “Having such a personal and gentle interaction with such a big animal felt extremely captivating,” Graham added.
