For a time, it appeared that Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz were forming a historic rivalry in men’s professional tennis. However, for months, due to injuries, they haven’t been on the court at the same time.
Alcaraz missed the French Open and Wimbledon with an injury, and now Sinner isn’t playing in the U.S. Open, he confirmed in a post on Instagram. That has shaken up the tournament, as he was a favorite to win the Grand Slam, along with Alcaraz, who is returning to the court for the first time since April.
“I missed you guys 🥹,” Alcaraz wrote on Instagram. However, fans won’t get to see him play Sinner, at least not this time.

Although Alcaraz is now the favorite, he hasn’t played since April and could face stiff competition from tennis great Novak Djokovic, Alexander Zverev, Ben Shelton, Taylor Fritz and other players. According to the U.S. Open, Alcaraz confirmed he would play just hours before Sinner announced that he was out. Alcaraz injured his wrist at the Barcelona Open, and that kept him on the sidelines for months.
Alcaraz teamed up with tennis legend Serena Williams in mixed doubles competition, but they lost in the quarterfinals. “I’m playing next to the one and only Serena Williams, so what else could you do? Just enjoy… Trying to do the things she told me to do,” Alcaraz said, according to People.

Sinner announced his withdrawal in an Instagram post a few days before the tournament started.
“Even though I have been working hard with my team and my medical staff, we have now had to make the difficult decision that I will not be able to compete at the US Open this year. We have been back on court in Monte Carlo over the last couple of days and have realised that I still need more time to recover from my right knee issue,” Sinner posted on Instagram.
“I’m obviously very sad and disappointed, as New York has a special place in my heart. I was very much looking forward to coming back and playing in the electric atmosphere in front of the great fans there, ❤️” he added.
Just days before that, he posted a video showing him running on the tennis court.
