Leatherman's 17-Feature Multitool Is a Very Rare 20% Off on Amazon Right Now

Men’s Journal aims to feature only the best products and services.  If you buy something via one of our links, we may earn a commission.

Why We Love This Deal

Leatherman is the gold standard of multitools. This American brand essentially invented them when founder Tim Leatherman released his first model, the Pocket Survival Tool (close to today's Bond model), back in 1983. These well-made, highly useful tools don’t come cheap today, but if you know when and where to look, you can find great deals on them. Now is one of those times—the brand just dropped the prices of a few of its tools, including the popular 17-feature Rebar model.

The Leatherman Rebar MultiTool is on sale for $72, a 20% discount from its normal price of $90. This multitool is a popular choice on Amazon: Over 1,000 were sold in the last month, and it's earned nearly 4,000 five-star ratings. The Rebar is available in five cool colorways at that price, and a basic stainless steel model is on sale for just $64.

It’s also highly compact, measuring just 4 inches when closed, and it weighs under 7 ounces. It ships with a nylon sheath for easy carrying on a belt or in a tool kit.

Texas Issues Encouraging Arch Manning Health Update

Texas fans are anxiously waiting to hear more on the status of starting quarterback Arch Manning, who is in concussion protocol after leaving last Saturday's win over Mississippi State during overtime.

Manning, who threw for 346 yards and three touchdowns while adding a rushing score in the 45-38 comeback victory, remains in concussion protocol as of today. However, head coach Steve Sarkisian offered an encouraging update on the former five-star recruit's health while speaking with reporters Wednesday afternoon.

Sarkisian revealed that Manning returned to practice today after sitting out previous sessions this week. While he still must be cleared to play against No. 9 Vanderbilt this weekend, this is a welcome step forward for the signal caller.

Safety Michael Taaffe, who is dealing with a broken thumb, also returned to the field today, Sarkisian said.

Concussion puts damper on Manning's breakout performance

Manning endured his fair share of criticism for inconsistent play earlier in the season, but the redshirt sophomore set a career-high with 346 passing yards against Mississippi State while rallying Texas from a 38-21 deficit.

Manning hit Emmett Mosley V on a 21-yard touchdown pass with 9:34 remaining to cut the margin to 10 points and later led a field goal drive to make the score 38-31. Ryan Niblett eventually sent the game to overtime with 79-yard punt return touchdown with less than two minutes remaining in regulation.

“He’s a warrior — he stood in there, he competed like he always does, and there were a couple protection breakdowns for sure in the game, which we need to clean up, but there were a couple others where he knew he was going to get hit, and he stood in the pocket and delivered a ball and delivered an accurate ball. So that was all very positive,” Sarkisian said on Monday of Manning's performance.

Caldwell preparing if Manning can't go

When Manning was knocked out of the game during the extra stanza, he was replaced by backup Matthew Caldwell, who hit Mosley for a 10-yard touchdown and the eventual winning score.

Caldwell hasn't seen much time for the Longhorns this season, but as a former starter at Gardner-Webb and Troy, he has plenty of experience on his resume.

“He’s probably the most engaged player on the sideline,” Sarkisian said. “He’s got a really good relationship with the guys, throws a really good ball, and he’s a guy who has been in a variety of systems. His demeanor and approach during his visit didn’t seem like this was too big for him.”

Texas, 6-2 and ranked 20th in the AP poll, will host No. 9 Vanderbilt at noon ET Saturday on ABC.

Hoka's 'Phenomenal' Everyday Sneakers Are Now Nearly 30% Off

Men’s Journal aims to feature only the best products and services.  If you buy something via one of our links, we may earn a commission.

Why We Love This Deal

Hoka is known for its comfy, well-cushioned running shoes. The Bondi is the perfect choice for maximum cushion and plushness underfoot, whereas the Clifton offers a balanced ride that’s great for everyday training, and the Mach is a leaner option that’s good for speed workouts. But Hoka makes more than just running shoes, and right now, one of its best—the super versatile Kawana 2 sneaker—is a rare 29% off.

The Hoka Kawana 2 is on sale for $99, down from its normal price of $140. This is the second round of markdowns Hoka has placed on this style, which means sizes are going to start to fly—they usually do during this second markdown period.

What Shoppers Should Know

  • Colorways Available: 2 on sale, 8 total
  • Sizes Available: 8-14
  • Best Use Case: The Kawana 2 is designed for smooth strides and lateral movements, making it a great choice for cross-training and gym workouts. It also works well for casual wear.

The Kawana is a little different from Hoka’s more well-known offerings. Unlike the Bondi or Mach, this shoe isn’t designed specifically for running. Instead, it’s geared toward cross-training and everyday wear.

It features a cushioned midsole, and the mesh upper has an internal bootie and plenty of padding around the ankle collar for a comfortable fit. The shoe is designed to offer good support even when you’re moving side-to-side—something that most running shoes lack. Finally, a gum rubber outsole generates reliable grip indoors and out.

What Shoppers Are Saying

The Kawana has impressed Hoka shoppers with its comfortable ride and versatility. Some wear it for work (it’s great for long days on your feet), others wear it while hiking and running, and others use it as a gym shoe. But everyone seems to agree on one thing: It's super comfortable.

“The shoe is comfortable, light, and just feels fast while on my feet,” said one shopper. Another called it “phenomenal” and “a great gym shoe” with “comfort in all the right places.”

SneaA versatile shoe like Hoka’s Kawana 2 is always a welcome addition to any footwear rotation, and you’ll be glad to have this sporty, comfy shoe in your closet—especially now that it’s 29% off. Grab yours today before your size sells out.

Flight Diverted After Passenger Stabs Two Others With Metal Fork

A flight from Chicago to Germany was diverted after a man allegedly stabbed two other passengers with a fork.

The U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Massachusetts says that 28-year-old Praneeth Kumar Usiripalli stabbed two others on the flight with a metal fork - one in the shoulder and one in the head.

Following meal service, Minor A was sleeping lightly in a middle seat when he allegedly awoke to see Usiripalli standing over him,” the Attorney General's press release said.

Attorney's Office Describes The Attack

"It is alleged that Usiripalli used his right hand to strike Minor A in the left clavicle area with a metal fork. Usiripalli then allegedly lunged toward Minor B – who was seated to Minor A’s right in a middle seat in the center row of the aircraft – and struck Minor B in the back of his head with the fork. Minor B suffered a laceration to the rear of his head.”

One of the teens said that he wasn't injured due to the thick sweatshirt he wore during the attack. He said that he exchanged a simple greeting with Usiripalli - seated next to him the flight - and that they were otherwise complete strangers.

The press release then says that Usiripalli raised his hand and made a gun with his fingers when crew members attempted to subdue him. He fired an imaginary gun before turning to slap a female passenger. He attempted to slap another crew member before he was eventually subdued.

Passengers Were Given Hotels, Rebooked Flights

The flight was eventually diverted to Boston's Logan International Airport, where Usiripalli was taken into custody. Lufthansa, the airline that ran the original flight, offered hotel accomodations and bookings on next available flights.

The company officially attributed the diversion to the actions of "was necessitated by the behavior of an unruly passenger, who was taken into custody by local authorities upon arrival.

The attorney's office says Usiripalli faces up to 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000 if he is found guilty. He's set to appear in federal court in Boston at a later date. Usiripalli had been in the United States on a student visa, and he sought a master's program in biblical studies.

This Popular Portable Generator That's 'Quiet' and 'Runs Great' Is on Sale for $300 at Walmart

Men’s Journal aims to feature only the best products and services.  If you buy something via one of our links, we may earn a commission.

Why We Love This Deal

Portable power stations might be all the rage right now, but those keen on gas-powered generators will be the first to note that having to rely on electricity for recharging isn't always the most reliable. That's why Nexpow's lineup of portable gas inverters has become so popular at Walmart. These generators feature a plethora of ports and are handy for camping and all kinds of outdoor events. They've been sold out for weeks, but Walmart just restocked the 2250W model.

The Nexpow 2250W Portable Gas Generator normally costs a cool thousand, but it’s currently just $300. This power station is fairly compact, at 20 inches on its longest side, and weighs a tick under 40 pounds, so it’s easy to move around. It’s earned an impressive 190 five-star ratings out of 167 total, with shoppers noting how simple but effective it is.

Nexpow 2250W Portable Gas Generator, $300 (was $1,000) at Walmart

Get It

What to Know Before Buying

  • Wattage: 2250 starting, 1800 running
  • Est. Runtime: About 10 hours, depending on usage
  • Gas Capacity: 1.06 gallons
  • Dimensions: 18.1x11.4x17.9
  • Weight: 39.7 pounds
  • Ports: 120V AC outlets (2), 5V USB outlet (1), 5V USB-C outlet (1)

This gas-powered generator can hold just over a gallon of fuel, and it has an eco mode that can extend its runtime to 10 hours operating at 25% load. There are two standard outlets (with waterproof covers), and both USB-A and USB-C ports. You can also hook it up to another generator in parallel mode for increased output.

At just under 40 pounds, it's on par with what similar gas- and electric-powered units would weigh, but where it makes up for this is with its price and noise level. The 79.7cc 4-stroke OHV single-cylinder engine is quite quiet, just 58 decibels (roughly the noise level of a dishwasher) at 23 feet away while operating.

Related: This Weatherproof Patio Heater Just Went on Sale for Under $100 at Walmart

What Shoppers Are Saying

One shopper wrote that this unit “runs great and is pretty quiet. It adjusts to added loads smoothly and consistently.” Another wrote that it kept coolers and fans running at a festival without using “a lot of gas or oil.”

Many, though, were shocked by the performance despite the price they paid. One said it's a “great product for the price” after they brought it on a camping trip and “used it to pump up two full-sized air beds on both nights and charged our phones, power banks, and other camping equipment.” They also said that it’s strong enough to charge an e-bike.

Whether you need it for emergencies or recreation, this Nexpow Gas Generator does everything you need a generator to do, and it does it well. This particular 2,250-watt model is the last of the three models that’s still in stock. With this big of a discount, we’re betting that it goes out of stock, yet again, within the next few weeks, so don’t hesitate to pick one up today.

Strength Coach’s ‘Perfect’ Chest Workout: Science-Backed Secrets to Faster Muscle Growth

For many gymgoers who place a heavy emphasis on weight lifting in their workout routine, a frustrating muscle to grow can be the chest. While it varies by individual, anyone who is having a tough time seeing consistent muscle growth in their chest or feels as though they've plateaued, there is some good news. Thanks to certified strength coach and founder of ATHLEAN-X, a leading science-based fitness brand, Jeff Cavaliere, the fix may be easier than anticipated.

Cavaliere offered detailed instructions on how to fill in "gaps" in chest workouts, along with a science-backed breakdown of the best approach to your weight-lifting routine. He explains what the "perfect" chest workout should consist of, but why the baseline concept of hitting all areas (upper, middle and lower) will still leave out a few keys to optimizing your gym session.

Best Chest Workouts: Why Jeff Cavaliere Says Many Approaches Lead to Plateaus

Man performs push-ups outdoors using push-up bars.

Alex Tihonov/Getty Images

Many gymgoers who focus on a specific muscle group or two during each gym session likely change up the exercises they do. Regardless, the main focus for chest workouts should be (and likely is, for some), to ensure you're working out your upper chest, mid-chest and lower chest.

Although this will feel like common knowledge to some, the key is to ensure you're taking advantage of the opportunities to remove the "gaps" Cavaliere mentions during the breakdown below the video.

“Now, the perfect chest workout should consist of exercises for your upper chest muscles, middle chest muscles, and lower chest muscles," Cavaliere writes. "But, even that doesn’t guarantee chest gains … you need to fill in the gaps of what is lacking on those popular chest exercise."

So, how do you fill in those gaps? And most importantly, what else can you do to push past the plateau and see true muscle growth? Cavaliere walks through the science aspect that fuels three key areas: frequency of chest workouts and number of sets, along with the specific exercises to integrate.

Science Behind Frequency and Sets of Chest Workouts

As Cavaliere highlights, his research into the science of chest workout frequency and set count shows that focusing on that muscle twice in a given week is recommended.

"When it comes to the perfect science-based workout, the first thing you really have to ask yourself is, 'What's the frequency with which I'm training?'" Cavaliere says. "One thing we do know with pretty good confidence these days is that two times a week for a muscle group is actually better than may just one time a week. [However,] the third extra workout in the week doesn't really provide much extra benefit, but the two will."

To go one step further, he specifically explains the science that highlights the benefits of focusing on a number of sets to do each week.

"If we want to grow our chest, there's got to be some target point for the number of sets we have to perform," he explains. "Well, the good news is science actually gives us the answer there too...somewhere between 12 and 24 sets is the target set volume that you want to have for your chest if you want to grow it."

The primary reason noted is that there's overlap between some chest exercises. Cavaliere ultimately points to targeting 10, 11 or 12 sets per workout, leaving you in the 20-24 range.

Breaking Down Each Day's Chest Exercises to Fill the 'Gaps'

The video does an excellent job of showing how both days of chest workouts will look, with a focus on hitting all key areas of your chest. Throughout the clip (just above), Cavaliere walks through every workout to show how it should look, and we'll list out each day's workouts just below.

Day 1 chest exercises:

  • Primer: Banded external rotator (10-15)
  • Incline dumbbell bench press (3 sets of 5-8 form failure)
  • Crossovers (3 sets of 10-12 reps)
  • Dumbbell floor flys (2-3 sets of 8-10 reps)
  • Deficit 1.5 rep push ladder (1 set to failure)
  • Bodyweight dips (1 set to failure)

Day 2 chest exercises:

  • Primer: Band pull-aparts (1-2 sets of 10-15 reps sub max)
  • Dumbell bench press (3 sets of 5-8 form failure)
  • High-to-low crossovers (3 sets of 10-12)
  • Incline cable press (2-3 sets of 8-10 form failure)
  • 1.5 rep dip ladder (1 set to failure)
  • Prison yard pushups (1 set to failure)

It's an impressive and well-rounded two-day workout plan that effectively pushes your chest to the max and is poised to set you up for success.

Travelers Urged to Avoid 8 Countries After U.S. Tourist's Death

Traveling for a vacation is support to be a fun, carefree and relaxing experience, but that's not always the case. The most important thing for anyone traveling is to stay safe and healthy. For example, according to Dr. Ashima Oza, a primary care physician and an instructor in the Division of Medicine at Weill Cornell Medicine, "from flu-like symptoms to digestive tract upsets, feeling ill post-vacation affects up to 80 percent of returning travelers."

In extreme cases, traveling can even be deadly. According to a report from Fox News Digital, a U.S. tourist died in Laos after "suspected alcohol poisoning this summer." News that like is causing governments to issue new travel warnings, including the British government.

According to Fox News, the British government has added eight countries to its list of travel warnings, and it relates to to the risk of methanol poisoning from tainted alcohol.

Travels 'May Face Risk' of 'Contaminated Alcohol

"The United Kingdom's Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) has warned that tourists visiting Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia and Uganda may face a risk of methanol poisoning from counterfeit or contaminated alcohol," Fox News reports.

They add that "according to an Oct. 21 advisory from the FCDO, the new warnings follow 'an increase in cases of serious illness and death caused by alcoholic drinks tainted with methanol in popular overseas travel destinations.'"

"The expanded list builds on existing guidance for countries including Thailand, Laos and Vietnam," the FCDO added.

Methanol, according to Merriam-Webster, is a "light volatile flammable poisonous liquid alcohol CH3OH used especially as a solvent, antifreeze, or denaturant for ethanol and in the synthesis of other chemicals."

Methanol is sometimes added to alcoholic drinks to make them cheaper to make. As the Guardian notes, "Sometimes it's added deliberately and illegally during or after manufacturing as a cheaper way to increase the alcohol content in a drink."

The Guardian adds that "death is not inevitable if only a small amount of methanol has been consumed and rapid treatment will greatly reduce damage," but "permanent vision damage can occur even at non-lethal doses if treatment is not administered quickly."

Common Symptoms of Methanol Poisoning

The common symptoms of methanol poisoning are "blurry vision, vomiting, confusion, nausea, visual loss, headache and intoxication," according to Dr. Sampson Davis, an emergency room physician, who told Fox News Digital the information.

"Methanol binds to the same receptors as alcohol and will give you the same elated feeling," the New Jersey-based physician said.

So, even though this travel warning is from the British government, Americans would be wise to consider it themselves, too.

Shaquille O'Neal Gives Strong Response to NBA Gambling Scandal

Shaquille O'Neal didn't mince words when discussing the NBA gambling scandal.

The accused include:

  • Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier.
  • Retired NBA player Damon Jones.
  • Then Portland Trailblazers head coach Chauncey Billups.

"All these guys knew what was at stake, and I’m just ashamed that they put themselves and put their family and put the NBA in this position,” O’Neal said on an ESPN broadcast.

“We all know the rules. We all know the letter of the law. And it’s just unfortunate — you know, innocent till proven guilty, but usually when the FBI has something, they have you. I know a lot of people in the FBI... When they come knocking on your door, they have something. We all know the letter of the law when it comes to gambling and sports gambling.”

Shaq added, "I know everybody that's at play, and I don't like this..." He said he had never gambled "at anyone's house."

Shaquille O'Neal Lamented That the Accused Players & Coach Put 'Their Families & Their Careers in Jeopardy'

O'Neal said he knows some of the people affected.

“I know Chauncey. I know Damon very well, played with Damon. … I’m ashamed that those guys will put their families and their careers in jeopardy," he said, according to ESPN.

"There’s an old saying in the hood, all money ain’t good money. So if you’re making $9 million...like, how much more do you need? Especially if you know you get caught, you can do jail time, lose your career, you know, put a bad image on yourself or your family or on the NBA....They dropped the ball. You never want to have your name involved in that...”

The comments were made on "Inside the NBA" on ESPN.

In one of the indictments, the U.S. Department of Justice announced the filing of a "seven-count indictment...charging 31 defendants in criminal schemes to rig illegal poker games at various locations in New York City, East Hampton, New York, and throughout the United States."

"This morning, 31 defendants were arrested in 11 states, including members and associates of the Bonanno, Gambino, and Genovese organized crime families of La Cosa Nostra (LCN); Chauncey Billups, head coach of the Portland Trail Blazers of the National Basketball Association (NBA); and Damon Jones, also known as 'Dee,' a former NBA player with the Cleveland Cavaliers and Miami Heat," the DOJ's statement says. "The defendants will make initial court appearances this afternoon at federal courthouses throughout the United States, including the Eastern District of New York."

In a separate indictment, Rozier was charged with other defendants and accused of a "wire fraud conspiracy and money laundering conspiracy for their alleged roles in a scheme to use inside information from National Basketball Association (NBA) players and coaches to profit from illegal betting activity."

Charles Barkley Also Weighed in, Calling 'These Dudes' Stupid

NBA legend Charles Barkley also weighed in on the scandal during the broadcast.

“This ain’t got nothing to do with addiction. These dudes are stupid,” Barkley said. “Why are they stupid? You under no circumstances can you fix basketball games. Under no circumstances. ... Like, Rozier makes $26 million. Him betting, giving people information or taking himself out of games — how much is he going to benefit taking himself out the game to get unders?”

Barkley added: “You can’t fix ball games. Like I said, this is separate from Chauncey, but the notion that guys are making all this money and giving information — come on, man, stop that. That got nothing to do with addiction. That’s just total stupidity on these two dudes parts.”

Third Death Reported at Walt Disney World Within 10 Days

After two headline-making deaths in recent days, TMZ is reporting that another death has occurred at a Walt Disney World property, the third in just the last 10 days.

The outlet confirmed the death with the Orange County Medical Examiner's Office in Orlando. A spokesperson for the agency said it is "still in the process of completing" its exams on the unidentified deceased.

It's unclear exactly what happened, but TMZ found a TikTok video posted Thursday morning at Bay Lake Tower at Disney's Contemporary Resort in Florida. The video showed there was a heavy police presence, though it's unclear what triggered the massive response.

The First Two Deaths

A woman was found dead at Walt Disney World's Contemporary Resort on Oct. 14. The woman was later identified as Summer Equitz, and her death was ruled a suicide.

Exactly one week later, authorities responded to calls for an unresponsive male at Disney's Fort Wilderness Resort and Campground at approximately 7:32 a.m.

According to multiple reports, the man was in his 60s and experienced a "medical episode." Authorities do not suspect foul play.

Unresponsive Woman at Disneyland

The three deaths at a Disney World property do not include a woman in her 60s who was found unresponsive at the Haunted Mansion on Oct. 8 at Disneyland in California.

She was transported to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Per People, a cause of death will not be revealed.

How Many Deaths Have Occurred at Disney World?

According to an analysis by legal firm Di Marco, Araujo, & Montevideo, there were 96 fatalities at Disney World between its opening in 1955 and 2024. The most common cause of death was natural causes, followed by suicide, drowning, and falls. Nearly 80 percent were guests, while just under 20 percent were employees. While a few resulted in Disney paying settlements, most incidents never saw a lawsuit filed.

Roundball Rock: John Tesh Explains Origin of NBA on NBC Theme Song

By any measure, John Tesh is an accomplished musician.

The New York native has won eight Emmys, made four Gold Records, and won an Associated Press award for investigative journalism.

Tesh has sold over eight million records and made millions from his concerts, but he’ll always be known to most of the world for one thing: Writing Roundball Rock, the theme song for the NBA on NBC in the 1990s.

That ditty has been in the public consciousness more recently with the pro basketball league returning to NBC this week after more than 20 years away, and he joined The Dan Patrick Show on Friday to explain how he came up with it.

Origins of a classic

“In 1990 when I heard that NBC had gotten the rights to the NBA back,” Tesh recalled during an appeared on the DP Show. “I’m in that sports ecosystem because I was working for the network on other stuff, and I thought, ‘What would an NBA theme sound like?’”

The idea ended up coming to him while he was in France covering the Tour de France bicycle race.

“I had this melody in my head…and I knew that if I went back to sleep — and I’m sure you’ve had this feeling when you have a great idea and you go back to sleep and it’s gone,” he said.

Without a tape recorder or sheet music (let alone a smartphone — it was the early 1990s, after all), he had to get resourceful.

“I called my answering machine at 2 a.m. and recorded that,” he said. “And when I got home, the two sections were on my answering machine.”

Those ended up being enough for him to compose a song that ends up being the prelude to many classic games, including all six of Michael Jordan’s NBA championships along with the Houston Rockets’ back-to-back titles and many more memorable moments.

(For those who are too young to remember, an answering machine was something people hooked up to their landlines to record messages if someone called and they weren’t able to answer. It was like voicemail but with real tapes and everything!)

Tesh still recording new music

The world is grateful Tesh was able to come up not only with this tune but was also resourceful enough to make sure he got it on tape before being lost into the ether.

That bit of extra effort has worked out pretty well for Tesh, too.

“It’s supernatural for me because the first time it was on the air and I was sitting in a bar watching it come on the air, I had written hundreds of themes for CBS in particular, everything from football to tennis, and so this was another theme,” Tesh said. “It was sort of bouncy and not as epic as most of the stuff that I did.”

Tesh has been recording since the mid-80s, and he has a new album out called Sports, which he is promoting, the first since Songs and Stories from the Grand Piano in 2020.

On Dan Patrick’s show, he also settled a debate (if there was one) between famous songs he wrote: Entertainment Tonight or Roundball Rock

“Oh, Roundball Rock,” he replied immediately.

Major Airports Are Facing Problems Amid Government Shutdown

As the federal government shutdown continues, the travel industry has been hit particularly hard as furloughs and unpaid workers have led to staffing shortages for airtraffic controllers and the Transportation Security Administration (TSA).

While airports are continuing to function to the best of their abillities, three of the biggest and busiest airports in the entire country faced significant problems as a result of staffing shortages this week, resulting in ground stops.

Staffing Shortages in the Travel Industry

About 13,000 air traffic controllers and about 50,000 Transportation Security Administration officers are currently working without pay as a result of the government shutdown.

Staffing shortages within those agencies are becoming an increasing issue as workers increasingly cannot afford to go without a paycheck and seek other opportunities. This will only get worse as the shutdown continues.

The FAA has issued a warning to all travelers about the staffing shortages and how it could impact travel around the country.

Ground Stops at Major Airports

On Thursday, the major airport servicing the Washington D.C. area as well as two major airports servicing the New York city area all issues ground stops due to staffing shortages.

According to Fox News, Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA) near Washington, D.C., was the first to issue a ground delay program Thursday after the airport announced that flights were pushed back an average of 30 minutes as a result of the staffing issues.

Following the ground stop at DCA, two major airports in the New York City area also issued ground stops as Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) in New Jersey and LaGuardia Airport (LGA) in New York halted all departures from the two major airports.

As a result, thousands of individuals across the country were impacted.

Other Delays This Week

These latest ground stops come after several other major airports faced similar issues this week. The Federal Aviation Administration said earlier this week that air traffic control staffing issues were to blame for travel at airports in Dallas, Chicago, Atlanta, Newark, Las Vegas, and Phoenix and warned that these delays could continue.

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy has said that 53% of flight delays during a week-long period earlier this month were due to staffing issues. Typically, that number is around 5%, highlighting just how much the shutdown is impacting the travel industry.

Survivor 49's Jason on His Unexpected Journey From Just an Alternate to Official Castaway (Exclusive)

After going from Survivor 49 alternate to full-fledged castaway, Jason Treul's time in Fiji ended sooner than he hoped—but not before he made his mark. Speaking with Men’s Journal after his elimination episode, Jason opened up about what it was like to be thrown into the game at the last minute, getting "swap-screwed," and why he’s ultimately proud of the experience. He also reflected on the rare alternate-to-player journey viewers got to see play out on screen.

Scroll down to read the full exit interview with Jason.

Men’s Journal: How are you feeling after watching the episode last night? What was it like reliving your boot?

Jason Treul: Yeah, I know. It’s interesting. I know what happens, I just don’t know what’s going to be shown. So I think that watching it, I was like, oh yeah, you kind of go back into that mentality of how it felt. And I think the episode really paints what my point of view was, even though it does show a lot of other people. My thought going into that last day was, so much of this is out of my control. So much of this is decisions between old Uli as to what they want to happen. You know what I mean? So being able to see those conversations, hear spicy confessionals about what’s going on, it was really fun. I was watching it with Jawan [Pitts] too. We watched it together, and then when the rock draw scene happened…I don’t know. It’s funny. My back was against the wall. I felt like it was against the wall, and I think that’s what it showed.

Men’s Journal: At Tribal, you seemed surprised. Did you think you had made some progress, especially with Savannah [Louie]?

Jason: I think so. I’m not Savannah, so I can’t really speak to her, but if I was in her position, I would be very, I guess “trepidatious" is the right word? She was just hesitant to tell me anything. Even if I wanted Jawan out, it’s something that one, I can do without Jason’s help, and then two, if I tell him, maybe it blows up in my face. So I think that there’s very… I don’t know, I just can’t see a world where I’m being let in on the plan, right? I’m somebody where it’s like, my number doesn’t even matter. So did I get the sense that Jawan was on the bottom? Yes. Did anyone tell me that Jawan was a name that was being thrown out? No. I guess you could say implications of that—other people were talking to each other more than Jawan, but no one ever told me, “Hey, this is the power dynamic of Uli. Let me tell you everything in our PowerPoint presentation.” It’s like, no, dude, we’re not telling you anything.

Men’s Journal: Was it easier or harder to accept going out the way you did, knowing so much came down to swap luck?

Jason: I think that I have a unique thought on that—or not a unique thought, but a unique perspective—because the reason that I even get to play the game anyway is as an alternate. It’s out of my hands. So it’s like, tide comes in, tide comes out. There are these forces in the game of Survivor that are just sort of outside of your agency. I was put on the show because of things outside of my control. I was taken off of the show by something that was a little outside of my control. I think that at least I’m playing the game. I can try a little bit. I’m very proud that I was able to outlast Matt [Williams] in one episode because, hey, if two people are swap-screwed, at least I did better than the other guy. So I think I’m very at peace with how things went. Couldn’t happen to a better guy.

Men’s Journal: Were you surprised that they showed your alternate story on TV?

Jason: Yeah, I mean, that was my biggest point of anxiety before the premiere. Not anything that happens on the island, but just like—am I allowed to talk about this really important experience that I had? It’s weird because being the alternate toes this weird line of, is this something that regular people in America know about, care about, have context for? Does it make sense for a television show to say anything about that, or is that all just behind-the-scenes fun stuff? So I actually didn’t know, and that’s how come I frame it at the beginning. I said, “Jeff, I don’t know if I can say this—cut it if we can’t—but I’m going to say it because this matters so much to me.” It was crazy that it happened. It was crazy that they even showed it. I was fully prepared to be like, OK, this is something I can just kind of keep close to my chest and tell my friends. But no, I was so happy to see that that was told to everyone.

Men’s Journal: If you had known you’d definitely be playing, would you have prepared any differently?

Jason: I think that I would’ve probably prepared more for the strategic elements. My focus going in as the alternate was like, oh, if I get pulled in, I just want to make sure that I don’t die. So I wanted to make sure that I was physically fit enough—like, I’m not going to be Jake [Latimer] levels, but I’m going to try to make sure that I don’t die in the mud. I slept outside. I made sure to starve myself so that I could at least withstand the elements. That was my focus. I didn’t really think about the strategic stuff because it’s like, OK, I’ll figure it out as I get there. Maybe next time I apply, I’ll be deeper into that—maybe a more strategic slant. I don’t know if strategy helps when you get swap-screwed; maybe I come back super prepared and it doesn’t make the difference. But who knows?

Men’s Journal: Did you have fun out there?

Jason: Yeah, I thought it was amazing. I had so many moments of triumph out there too. It’s so cool to go from this spot where I’m like, oh, I’m not enough, this isn’t for me, I don’t belong here, and then being tossed in, being able to flourish. Also, having lived long enough in the game to meet so many people, I felt like—towards the end of my time there—I was like, dude, this was my season. It’s crazy to think. I started from such a perspective of, “Oh, this belongs to them.” But having lived through this season, I’m like, no—this belongs to me. This belongs to us. I felt like I was part of the tapestry of what the season was, which is cool.

Men’s Journal: Did you consider playing your Shot in the Dark?

Jason: From my point of view, it really truly is a two-day journey. It’s like a sting operation from all of Uli to take me from this person that is willing to just blindly say, “I’ll play it,” to diffusing this bomb. By the end of it, I’m like, no, dude, I love you all, I’ll play together. I think that from my point of view, one of their main objectives was to tell me whatever it is to get me to not play it—because what else are they doing other than that? So many of them, I think the point of view I want to emphasize is that this is a lot of our first or second Tribals. You want to use those first couple of Tribals to test relationships and bonds, and I knew that the first one was going to be Uli reinforcing their relationships with each other to vote out one of us.

I thought that once they got that out of their system, then we can do something for the second vote. And that’s exactly the narrative Savannah gave to me. But I think again, it’s another vote where, if Jawan votes with us and he doesn’t realize he’s on the bottom—it’s interesting the spot that he’s in right now. Because he hasn’t been giving a lot of information, no one’s turned on him yet in the vote. He’s someone who’s willing to rig a rock draw for the people—the tribe—that he’s on the bottom of. That’s such an interesting thought.

Men’s Journal: How close do you think Savannah actually was to flipping?

Jason: I don’t know. The tough thing is that I think these are conversations I’m just sort of a chess piece for. Even though I’m an interesting tool to effectuate this idea from Savannah, we see that she’s talking with Nate [Moore] about it because this is actually something she has. She wants to talk with people that she trusts. I don’t know how close she was to making that decision. I don’t think I’m the person that knows. Maybe she’d be more honest about her thoughts with people she’s known longer. Would’ve been nice if it went the other way, but I don’t think I had a lot of sway in making that choice. That truly was something she had to figure out for herself.

Men’s Journal: We saw other tribes poking fun at the Hina chants. What was it like seeing that back?

Jason: We’re all in Survivor in our underwear, OK? We’re all cringe. I think that the thing in the tribe was a little silly. I think at a certain point, it was just this weird combination of personalities—Kristina [Mills] was a cheerleader, MC [Chukwujekwu] is a personal fitness coach, and Sophie [Segreti] is a really competitive challenge person. I’m a home-team boy myself. We were just like, screw it, dude. We want to be here, let’s hype ourselves up so we can do well in this challenge. Obviously, Survivor is a game of perception—that’s a stupid thing to do—but when you have those personalities together, it’s like, let’s do it. Let’s braid our hair together so that we can have a little extra secret sauce when we win the challenge.

Another part too—we’re the only yellow tribe in the new era to do what we did, and I think that was weighing on our minds. We didn’t want to be the disaster tribe. They always pick us to be the disaster. We wanted to do everything we could to perform well in the challenges.

Men’s Journal: I know you hadn't really met them yet, but what did you think watching the Sage [Ahrens-Nichols] and Shannon [Fairweather] dynamic play out?

Jason: Oh, my God. After the game ends, everyone gets to meet each other and everyone on our cast is so funny. The Sage and Shannon thing is so interesting. There are a lot of really—let’s say—interesting personal dynamics that say a lot about people in the world. Every one of us knows or has in our lives a Sage or a Shannon, and when those worlds collide, it’s really cool. That’s what makes Survivor, Survivor. Also, Sage’s facial expressions are so good. I love them—they’re insane.

Men’s Journal: She was like Jim Halpert-ing the camera, which I thought was hilarious.

Jason: I know! That little thing with Shannon was so good.

Men’s Journal: Last question—are you glad you did it, and would you play again?

Jason: Dude, yes—so happy. I think once you’re on the boat, you’re like, get me out of here, dude, I want to eat a burger. But then you eat your burger, and literally less than 12 hours later, you’re like, throw me back in. I want to do it again. I was there as an alternate, right? When you’re an alternate, you’re praying on a chance for a chance. For that to pay off, it’s like—dude, what can we not accomplish if we put our minds to it?
