Allagash Brewing Company x Crowns & Hops Brewing Co. Cur-8

Style: Pilsner

Allagash and Crown & Hops aren’t close. The first is based in Maine, while the other is getting ready to open its flagship location in Inglewood, CA. However. the two breweries have found a way to bridge a different kind of gap with a new collaboration. Cur-8 is a mix of Crown & Hops’ 8 Trill Pils and Allagash’s Curieux, a barrel-aged tripel. 8 Trill Pils gets its name from a statistic in a W.K. Kellogg Foundation report that suggests the U.S. could realize an $8 trillion gain in national GDP by closing the equality gap by 2050. It’s an issue that’s vitally important to Crowns & Hops, one of about 70 Black-owned breweries in the U.S.—out of more than 9,000 total breweries. As for Cur-8 the beer? It’s a really interesting collaboration. It’s slightly hazy and straw-like in color with notes of vanilla, bourbon, and light grains. Drinking it, the beer has the crispness of a pilsner and a maltiness that works well with flavors of vanilla, caramel, and oak.

Atwood Farm Brewery Dark Harbor

Style: Stout

Everything in Atwood Farm’s beer is a local product. The malt comes from less than 50 miles away and the hops from even closer—if not the farm’s own fields. Even the oysters are harvested locally. Oysters? Yep, the brewery’s “black ale with bivalves” uses whole oysters in the brew—which lend, according to Atwood Farms, “a slight brininess all the way to the roasty shores of barley town.” Out of the can, this very dark black beer with thick tan foam has aromas of roasted malt and, unsurprisingly, sea air. Drinking Dark Harbor, you get flavors of dark roast malt and grains with a bit of refreshing saltiness. Want a beer that tastes like Washington's Pacific Coast? Dark Harbor is the beer that will take you there.

Drinking it, there’s still that grassy farmhouse kick and sharpness, but it’s still refreshing and floral. “Sometimes,” as Fair Isle says about Lottie, “simplicity is king.”

Style: IPA

In a Firestone Walker video, brewmaster Matt Brynildson says he had a hard time wrapping his mind around the hazy IPA style at first. It took a trip to Germany for him to find "his groove," when he looked at Bavarian hefeweizens. The result was Mind Haze, a beer that's "super sessionable" and "amazingly smooth." Pouring Mind Haze, it appears blonde and hazy like grapefruit juice. It has an aroma of Texas grapefruit and hops. It tastes creamy with a highly accessible pineapple flavor.

Grand Teton Brewing Bluebird Pilsner

Before it was Grand Teton Brewing, it was Otto Brothers' Brewing Company. Owned by two German brothers, it was the first microbrewery in the state of Wyoming, but more importantly, it was where the first glass jug growlers were developed. The water used for Bluebird Pilsner is glacial run-off that's filtered by the granite and limestone of the nearby mountains before surfacing at a spring half a mile from the brewery. Bluebird looks like lemon juice and has a light, lemony aroma. Tasting the pilsner, you get a lingering grassy aftertaste that levels up as you drink it.

Georgetown Brewing Company Roger's Pilsner

Style: Pilsner

The history page of Georgetown Brewing makes it clear they're not fans of beer bios. Now, founders Manny Chao and Roger Bialous may not have sold insurance, but they definitely got the well-crafted beer part down. Roger's is light blond in color with a quick-diminishing head. It has a light aroma of grass and a nice biscuit taste with an easy finish.
