John Cena is taking his next Hollywood adventure around the world. The WWE legend has joined forces with Jessica Biel for Matchbox the Movie, a new action-packed film that’s coming to Apple TV next month.
Matchbox the Movie, based on Mattel’s iconic line of toy cars, is set to premiere on Apple TV on Oct. 9, 2026. In addition to Cena and Biel, the movie stars Arturo Castro (The Menu), Sam Richardson (Hocus Pocus 2), Teyonah Parris (Dear White People), Danai Gurira, Corey Stoll, Bill Camp, and Golshifteh Farahani.
The upcoming live-action film follows the story of “a globetrotting adventure about a group of friends since childhood who have their lives upended when undercover CIA agent Sean (John Cena), their long-absent former leader, returns to their small town and unwittingly gets them embroiled in a frantic international pursuit to save the world.”
Sam Hargrave, known for his work on the Extraction movies, directed this film, while David Coggeshall penned the script. Skydance’s David Ellison, Dana Goldberg and Don Granger produced, as did Robbie Brenner and Ynon Kreiz of Mattel Studios.
During a recent interview with Deadline, Cena teased some of the car stunts he performed for the film. “I got to drive a VW bus, which I was able to wheely it because of the weight ratio of the car, and they souped it up because it was a movie one. Wheelying a van was pretty fun,” he said. “And I got to drive a six-by-six Land Rover in the Sahara Desert. For real, just hey, this thing is roll cage-tested. You’re in there with a six-point harness. If you roll it, you’re probably going to be okay. Put the gas down and have fun. It came at a time in the movie where I really needed to get some stress off.”
Coyote vs. Acme, another film project of Cena’s, hit theaters last month.
