The great thing about indie games compared to AAA releases is the creativity that the developers are allowed to exude. Not restricted by a big budget or a conglomerate nagging about certain specifications and requirements in the game, independent games are the playground for novel ideas to flourish and maybe even revolutionize the industry.
And then there are the indie games that just troll you. Trees Hate You looks like it fits that category.
The game, developed by Tykenn and playable on Windows and Linux, allows the player to traverse a variety of levels in which the only enemy is nature itself: the trees. Inside these polygonal forests, the trees will shoot, hit, block, and overall just make your life a little more annoying as you try to find an exit.
The game appears to be made in a pretty simple graphical style, and the music juxtaposes the rage you might feel as the forest finds new ways to stop you from getting to the finish line. Social media users are already having loads of fun discussing the small gameplay trailer.

Games like this, where the concept straddles the border somewhere between silly and stupid, really do show how the video game industry has opened up and allowed for smaller developers to try their hands at literally anything that crosses their minds.
Remember Untitled Goose Game? The indie classic from House House that put the player in control of a goose whose job was to put townsfolk in fits of rage while accomplishing tasks to move on to the next area. Trees Hate You feels like it's in the same vein as that one.
There is no release date yet on Trees Hate You, but the game is set for a 2026 release, and online gamers have tried demos and uploaded their experiences to the internet for fans to get a taste of the game.
No, this doesn't look like it will be the transcendent indie masterpiece that was Hades or Hollow Knight, but Trees Hate You might just be the gag gift your gamer friends will thank and curse you for telling them about!
