DirecTV Quietly Adds 5 New Channels for Customers

Earlier this week DirecTV made a new offering to its customers without so much as an announcement. The pay TV service folded in five new channels to the streaming lineup, but only for some subscribers.

The move came not long after DirecTV added seven new ESPN+ live sports channels for satellite customers.

DirecTV Adds 5 New Peacock Chanels

Cordcutters News first reported that DirecTV added as many as five Peacock Games channels for subscribers who sign up for Peacock through their DirecTV subscription.

"The first Peacock Games channels hit the service last night and feature college basketball, with more set to launch in the future, around upcoming events. The channels will include major Big Ten and Big East college basketball, top English Premier League action, and other significant live sports events," Cordcutters News said.

DirecTV Offers Further Information on New Channels

DirectTV sells its Peacock premium plan for $10.99, the same price on the Peacock website, but also includes it in other packages like its $9.99 a month Movie Extra Pack.

The TV provider issued a statement revealing the availability of the new channels will "depend on the volume of events and live content, but we can expand to as many as five by 2Q or so 2026. We’ll have at least three to work with as soon as a week from now.”

For now, the new offering serves as "extra live action" as customers wait to see if DirecTV will land NBC Sports Network as a new service in the near future - only Comcast's Xfinity and YouTube TV are offering the revived channel right now.

Archaeologists Make Massive Undersea Discovery That Matches 'Sunken City' Myth

Off the coast of a French peninsula, archaeologists have uncovered a massive undersea wall which dates back to 5,000 B.C. and correlates with a local myth telling of a sunken city (per BBC).

Massive Undersea Wall Corroborates 'Sunken City' Legend

The 394-foot wall was built between the high and low tide marks on western edge of the Ile de Sein of Brittany. At 65 feet wide and 6.5 feet tall, it is the largest underwater structure ever discovered in the country. As water levels decreased to under 30 feet, the mythical "lost city" became visible once again. Archaeologists believe it was originally built as either a fish trap or a dam to protect against the ever-rising ocean.

'Structured Society of Hunter-Gatherers'

The wall was constructed around large granite slabs, or “monoliths,” arranged on bedrock, which were then fortified with more granite slabs and stones. Archaeologists believe that, if the wall was indeed erected for fishing, the monoliths served to support makeshift nets made from sticks and branches. According to the archaeologists’ study, published in the International Journal of Nautical Archaeology, the construction reflects "technical skills and social organization sufficient to extract, move and erect blocks weighing several tons, similar in mass to many [Neolithic] Breton megaliths.”

"It was built by a very structured society of hunter-gatherers, of a kind that became sedentary when resources permitted. That or it was made by one of the Neolithic populations that arrived here around 5,000 BC," archaeologist Yvan Pailler explained to BBC.. "This is a very interesting discovery that opens up new prospects for underwater archaeology, helping us better understand how coastal societies were organized," Pailler later told AFP (via CBS).

SAMM, 2023 / Yves Fouquet et al., International Journal of Nautical Archaeology (2025)

SAMM, 2023 / Yves Fouquet et al., International Journal of Nautical Archaeology (2025)

Site Was Originally Spotted in 2017

Per the study, there exists in the region a legend about the sunken city of Ys, which was thought to lie in the ocean off Brittany. This incredible discovery may now finally answer lingering questions about the myth. "It is likely that the abandonment of a territory developed by a highly structured society has become deeply rooted in people's memories," the study reads. "The submersion caused by the rapid rise in sea level, followed by the abandonment of fishing structures, protective works, and habitation sites, must have left a lasting impression."

Yves Fouquet, a local geologist, first made the remarkable study in 2017 after using cutting-edge radar technology to make depth charts. "Just off Sein, I saw this 120-metre (393-foot) line blocking off an undersea valley,” he explained to Le Monde. “It couldn't be natural.” However, further investigations had to wait until 2022, when seaweed in the region receded. "Archaeologists did not expect to find such well-preserved structures in such a harsh setting," Fouquet added.

DeWalt's 'Outstanding' 20V Max XR Brushless Jig Saw Is 50% Right Now on Amazon

Men’s Journal aims to feature only the best products and services.  If you buy something via one of our links, we may earn a commission.

Why We Love This Deal

Loads of must-have tools have remained on sale after Amazon's Black Friday event last month, which is great news for anyone interested in beefing up their collection or looking for thoughtful gifts. DeWalt, as usual, is playing a huge role in this—things like DeWalt's brushless drill and driver kit and even its double-bevel miter saw, for example, have discounts of up to 40% off, and, surprisingly, the brand's popular jig saw is also among this group with an even larger discount.

The DeWalt 20V Max XR Cordless Jig Saw (DCS334B) is marked down to just $120 right now, a 50% discount off its normal price. Like nearly all DeWalt tools, it is highly rated (4.8 out of 5 stars) and beloved by DIYers and tradespeople alike. It's also currently ranked as the No. 1 bestseller among Amazon’s power jig saws.

DeWalt 20V Max XR Cordless Jig Saw (DCS334B), $120 (was $239) on Amazon

GET IT

What Shoppers Should Know

  • Key Feature: Brushless Motor
  • Compare to: Directly compare this to the DCS331B before making a purchase.
  • Weight: 5.2 pounds
  • Size: 10.25-by-3.75-by-8.38 inches
  • Battery: DeWalt 20V (not included)

The DCS334B jig saw must be immediately compared to the DCS331B before purchase. While there are subtle differences (this drill is smaller and weighs slightly less), the tools operate nearly identically. However, the DCS334B (this one) uses a brushless motor, and the DCS331B does not. People who use tools regularly or professionally swear by brushless motors for their efficiency and long lives.

Otherwise, the tools largely operate the same. Again, subtle differences are there, but the ability to easily cut at 15-, 30-, and 45-degree angles, a keyless blade change, integrated dust blower for clean workspaces, and variable speed trigger grip are all there on this model, too.

The price of the two tools is also noteworthy. The non-brushless model currently sits at $129, so it actually costs less for the better of them right now.

What Shoppers Are Saying

The balance and proper weight of a tool in the hand is somewhat subjective, but one user nevertheless chimed in with an opinion, “The size and weight of this brushless model is outstanding. Perfectly balanced with cell packs attached.”

Another user who's been using an old corded jig saw said, “The brushless motor is quieter than my old one, by far.”

The DeWalt 20V Max XR Cordless Jig Saw (DCS334B) is just $120, a price that has made it a target for quickly selling out. Get yours before the price hikes back up.

Why We Love This Deal

If you've held out this long for a warm jacket, you're in luck: REI's annual Holiday Sale is now live, and one of the brand’s more popular in-house pieces is on sale, again. This immensely popular Co-op-brand down jacket is a perennial favorite among cold-weather adventurers, backpackers, and anybody just looking for a functional jacket with excellent versatility—and now, it’s over $70 off.

Now just $167, the REI Co-op Magma 850 Down Jacket is a premium down jacket that’s ultralight, comfortable, incredibly warm, and stylish enough to wear out on the town. REI makes a new version of this jacket with small updates every year, and as expected, this year's model has become a favorite, earning a 4.6-star rating among the retailer's diehards.

It also comes in a hooded version, which is on sale for just $14 more through Nov. 24.

What Shoppers Should Know

  • Color: Black, olive, orange
  • Size: S to 3XL
  • Type: Power down jacket
  • Fill: 850-fill-power goose down
  • Materials: 100% recycled ripstop nylon shell
  • Finish: Durable water repellent (DWR), PFA-free
  • Weight: 11 ounces
  • Warmth Level: Quite warm yet breathable
  • Packable: Yes
  • Best For: Casual wear, layering, light activity, wind-stopper

Every year, REI releases the new Magma lineup, generally improving insulation mapping and using the latest tech materials, and this year is no different. It features 100% recycled ripstop nylon with a DWR-treated finish that’s crucially PFA-free and makes rain and water easily bead off. It somehow packs 850-fill-power goose down into a more streamlined look, giving you a tremendous warmth-to-weight ratio. Even the down itself is water-resistant, so if you do get caught in inclement weather, you’ll have a jacket that continues to keep you warm and insulated.

This version is one of the brand’s lightest yet, weighing just 11 ounces. Despite that, it's still ultra-warm, and that's thanks to the baffles. This design adds insulation where it’s needed and cuts out the rest. It also features functional touches, including elastic cuffs, a drawcord hem, a windflap zipper, and articulated elbows. It has a zipper chest pocket for EDC carry, and—one of the main reasons it’s so popular—it can easily fold into its own pocket for travel and storage, fitting easily into any backpack or bag.

This jacket is within the same realm as Patagonia’s Down Sweater and Arc’teryx's Cerium Jacket, yet it doesn’t carry the premium price of around $300 to $400 like they do. Typically, that would denote a lesser-quality garment, right? That's not really the case here—this jacket consistently scores high marks in terms of warmth, weight, and performance.

What Wearers Are Saying

Even the lone one-star rating stated that “almost everything is good about this jacket,” although they disliked the fit. Every other reviewer gave it five or four stars, with the majority noting that it’s “amazingly warm.”

One shopper stated that the quality of the material is “top-notch” and the feathers inside are evenly distributed. “Even after packing it, which it packs very small, it fluffs back to its original shape,” they said.

With a $72 discount, the Magma 850 Jacket is likely to sell quickly—it usually does. Don’t miss out on yours and grab it before the sale ends on Nov. 24.

Adam Schefter Facing Criticism for His Comments on Sherrone Moore’s Firing

ESPN relies on Adam Schefter for his insider information about the NFL, but perhaps they should reconsider having him on the air to provide analysis on his alma mater and its head coach who is currently embroiled in scandal.

On Thursday, Schefter appeared on First Take to discuss the situation at Michigan, where head football coach Sherrone Moore was fired Wednesday, with cause, after a university investigation allegedly uncovered he had engaged in an "inappropriate relationship with a staff member."

Moore was eventually arrested as a suspect in an alleged assault as well, and will reportedly appear in court Friday. When Schefter provided his thoughts on the matter, he wound up earning himself a ton of well-founded criticism.

Schefter: We haven't heard Moore's side

In a cringeworthy monologue, Schefter cautioned that Moore "gets his say" in what went on and added that the 39-year-old married father of three believed that some at Michigan were "out to get him."

“What we haven’t heard yet is Sherrone Moore’s side of this. And he gets his say in this particular situation as well. And I do know he felt like people had it in for him for an awful long time there while he was at Michigan. He felt like there were people who were out to get him,” Schefter said. “So all these things can all be true. It’s possible that, yes, Michigan does have evidence that he had an inappropriate relationship with a staffer. And it could be that Sherrone Moore is right that people had it in for him.

“But the whole situation, itself, is just sad and tragic. Because now we have an individual who had his professional life, his personal life completely upended. We have a school with a bunch of players who don’t have a coach to turn to right now. We have a school in search of a new coach to lead forth that program. There are a whole host of things that have transpired here that have led this to be a completely surreal wild situation, that if you heard about it, you wouldn’t believe it because it almost seems made up.”

Schefter's comments draw blowback

Not surprisingly, given the gravity of the accusations against Moore and the situation as a whole, many in the media and the college football fan sphere were not interested in Schefter's take.

"ESPN should have a rule: The minute the police get involved in a story, Adam Schefter no longer talks about it on TV," said Buying Sandlot's James Kratch.

"Adam, man, what the hell are you talking about?" asked Yahoo Sports' Dan Wolken.

"He kept going around in circles on this and then got even weirder when Finebaum pushed back a little bit. Frankly, everyone on First Take was uncomfortable," said Awful Announcing's Ben Koo. "IMO ESPN would be wise to ease off Schefter as a leading reporter on the Moore firing. He's clearly conflicted."

"Well this was certainly a choice," added Jake Crain of "Crain and Company."

"This is such a horrific look for you," one fan said.

"Adam sure does care an awful lot about due process, hearing both sides, and compassion. I mean, literally only in regards to his alma mater, of course. If it's any other player, team, or coach, he'll be the first to say something nasty or post private information," another person chimed in.

Schefter's recent history is checkered

While Schefter is viewed as a respected insider, he unfortunately also has a history of putting his foot in his mouth, including having to apologize to the family of former NFL quarterback Dwayne Haskins for "insensitive" comments he made following Haskins' death in 2022.

Today's remarks aren't at that level of severity, but they still are embarrassing for Schefter and ESPN. He's probably better off not saying much else publicly on this issue, at least for the time being.

YouTube TV 'Quietly' Added Several New Channels This Week

YouTube TV has been making some notable changes over the last few days. Some have been well-publicized, while others have largely flown under the radar.

In the latter category, YouTube TV "quietly" added several local channels to its channel options this week, giving viewers throughout the country the opportunity to access more personalized content.

YouTube TV adds several CW affiliates

On the YouTube TV subreddit Tuesday, an intrepid user noted that the service had added four local affiliates of The CW Network.

The four channels, along with the markets they serve, are as follows:

  • WISH TV (Indianapolis)
  • WBKO-DT3 (Bowling Green)
  • KJCT-LP2 (Grand Junction)
  • KYOU-DT4 (Ottumwa)

WISH had previously announced in October it had reached an agreement with YouTube TV and Hulu.

With the addition of these affiliates and others, YouTube TV now has complete coverage of every local CW channel.

What are these CW affiliates known for?

Luke Bouma of Cord Cutters News has a more complete breakdown on what these new channels have to offer their area audiences.

"[WISH] has been a staple for viewers in central Indiana, providing access to popular network shows and local events," Bouma writes. "Alongside it, WBKO-DT3 from Bowling Green, Kentucky, joins the lineup, offering content tailored to the south-central Kentucky audience, including weather updates and community-focused broadcasts.

"KJCT-LP2, based in Grand Junction, Colorado, brings western Colorado perspectives to the platform, emphasizing regional news and outdoor lifestyle features. Additionally, KYOU-DT4 from Ottumwa, Iowa, rounds out the additions, delivering content for southeast Iowa and northern Missouri residents, with a focus on agricultural reports and local sports."

What other channels has YouTube TV added recently?

According to Bouma, in addition to the four CW properties, YouTube TV also "incorporated a handful of other local stations on the same day, though specifics on those remain centered around niche markets."

"These updates reflect a strategic push to fill in underserved areas, ensuring that more users can stream their preferred local content without relying on traditional cable providers," he writes.

Last week, YouTube TV also began live streaming all three channels from the public affairs network C-SPAN--C-SPAN, C-SPAN2 and C-SPAN3--in all markets.

YouTube TV makes major announcement for 2026

On Wednesday, YouTube TV announced it will begin offering 10-genre specific packages, known as YouTube TV Plans, beginning in early 2026.

One of the options, which is sure to be popular, will be the YouTube TV Sports Plan.

"The Sports Plan will offer fans access to all the major broadcasters as well as sports networks like FS1, NBC Sports Network, all of the ESPN networks, as well as ESPN Unlimited," YouTube TV said in a blog post. "Subscribers can include add-ons like NFL Sunday Ticket and RedZone, and keep all fan-favorite features, including unlimited DVR, multiview, key plays, and fantasy view."

'Jeopardy!’ Champ Hit With Felony Charges

Recent Jeopardy! champion Philip Joseph "Joey" DeSena was arrested on December 1 and faces two charges of felony secret peeping . An arrest warrant was issued on November 26 for the 43-year-old who allegedly installed cameras in a family's home in Currituck County, North Carolina.

DeSena won two episodes of Jeopardy! in November 2024, taking home $44,698 from the popular trivia game show. He made his return to the Champions Wildcard Tournament in early 2025, but was eliminated in the semifinals.

DeSena Arrested in Wake County, North Carolina

Wake County Sheriff's Office

Court documents from the Currituck District Court reveal that the crime took place on October 10, 2025, when DeSena allegedly placed a recording device in the bathroom and bedroom of a home "with the intent to capture the image of another without their consent." DeSena faces one charge for each room in which a camera was later found.

DeSena turned himself into the Wake County Sheriff's Office on December 1 and was later released on a $5,000 bail. The Raleigh native was also made to offer fingerprints and DNA samples before his release. His first court appearance is expected for Wednesday, December 10.

One Film Dominated This Year’s Golden Globe Nominations

There are only a few weeks left in 2025, and the first major award show of 2026 will honor some of the best performances and work from the worlds of film and television. The Golden Globes are set for mid-January, and the list of nominees for the prestigious honor was revealed on Monday.

The competition between the biggest names on screen will be fierce, but one film stands above the rest when it comes to nominations. A film by a well-respected director that stars an incredibly talented cast is usually a recipe for success, and that is certainly true for Paul Thomas Anderson's "One Battle After Another."

The film received near universal acclaim from fans and critics alike, and it's been honored with several Golden Globe nominations. "One Battle After Another" was nominated nine times, including for best motion picture (musical or comedy) and best director.

Anderson, DiCaprio Lead the Way

Anderson was nominated along with Ryan Coogler ("Sinners"), Guillermo Del Toro ("Frankenstein"), Jafar Panahi ("It Was Just an Accident"), Joachim Trier ("Sentimental Value") and Chloé Zhao ("Hamnet").

Anderson, Coogler, Panahi, Trier and Zhao were also recognized as writers in the best screenplay category.

In the best picture category inclusive of musicals and comedies, "One Battle After Another" was nominated with "Blue Moon," "Bugonia," "Marty Supreme," "No Other Choice" and "Nouvelle Vague."

Leonardo DiCaprio, Sean Penn, Benicio Del Toro, Teyana Taylor and Chase Infinitii have each been nominated for their performances in the film. Penn and Del Toro will each be considered for the best supporting actor award, inclusive of musicals and comedies.

Radiohead guitarist Jonny Greenwood was nominated in the best original score category for his work on the film, joining heralded film composers like Ludwig Göransson ("Sinners") and Hans Zimmer ("F1").

Popular Films, TV Shows Acknowledged

Some of the year's most popular films were also recognized. Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande were each nominated for their roles in the highly successful "Wicked: For Good," while hits like "Weapons" and "Kpop Demon Hunters" were selected for nominations in other categories.

On the television side, "The White Lotus" leads with six nominations. The show won in 2023 after being nominated in the best limited series category, and actress Jennifer Coolidge won for best supporting actress.

This year, "The White Lotus" has been nominated for best television drama outright, along with "The Diplomat, ""The Pitt, ""Pluribus, ""Severance" and "Slow Horses."

Fans can tune in to watch the Golden Globes on Sunday, January 11 on CBS and Paramount+.

The Philips 3200 Series Fully Automatic Espresso Machine is still on sale for $450—its Cyber Monday price—at Amazon right now. This is a 44% discount off its normal $800 price tag and one of the best prices ever, save for this past Black Friday, when it was $50 less.

It’s earned thousands of five-star ratings, and customers appreciate that it's very low maintenance and combines cutting-edge technology with exquisite design to make coffee that “tastes amazing every single time.” This model is Amazon's No. 3 bestselling super-automatic espresso machine, and over 3,000 were sold in the last month.

Its 12-step ceramic grinder (and compartment for pre-ground coffee), on-board water filter, easy-to-rinse tubeless milk system, and five drink presets mean it’s a fantastic machine for folks who don’t have the time or interest to endlessly finetune settings, develop techniques, and generally geek out over coffee.

What Shoppers Are Saying

Users say this thing is built to last. After 3 years of use in a hospital ward, where it goes through a case of beans every 2 months, one said, “This machine, with admittedly subpar maintenance, is still going strong.” Used by the nurses on the floor, this reviewer called this machine “one of the best purchases I’ve ever bought that has really stood up to the abuse.” If it can stand up to that kind of treatment, it’s hard to imagine that in-home use by just a handful of people with halfway decent maintenance would be an issue.

Another customer wrote that they are “very happy” with this machine because “it’s easy to use, easy to clean, and the coffee tastes amazing every single time,” while the milk frother “works great for lattes and cappuccinos.” This machine “saves us so much time and money compared to coffee shops.”

The Philips 3200 Series Fully Automatic Espresso Machine is a great way to save on visits to the coffee shop, and this sale is a great way to save on it. This is marked as a limited-time deal on Amazon, which means the price is likely to jump up at some point, so get yours soon.

Netflix Removing More Than 100 Popular Titles From Its Catalog

Starting on Jan. 1, 2026, Netflix viewers will be losing more than 100 popular movies from their selection, so the time to watch these shows is down to the final few weeks.

According to Super Hero Hype, five of those will be popular superhero films from the house of DC, Marvel and Millarworld. "As new superhero movies continue to pour in on Netflix, the streaming giant is all set to remove certain titles from its roster come next month," Apoorv Rastogi states in a Dec. 7 feature.

Every so often, as Netflix bring new titles in, they have to delete a good number, too, so that's the reason for the change. There's always the possibility that these title will be available again in the future, but starting in January, they'll be pulled from the streaming service.

Movies Netflix is Pulling

"January 2026 brings an unusually packed wave of departures, from superhero tentpoles and beloved comedies to crowd-pleasing family films and long-standing comfort rewatches," notes Moore. "If something in your rotation comes from Sony, Warner Bros, or a past Netflix deal, there's a decent chance it's on the move, so now's the moment to squeeze in those final watches before they vanish with the arrival of the new year."

According to a report from Kasey Moore of What's on Netflix, one of the biggest films leaving in 2026 is Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. The Jason Momoa flick debuted in 2023 and was the last entry in the DCEU. Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom wasn't as popular as the original and left theaters with a worldwide collection of only $440 million, according to Box Office Mojo.

Other titles scheduled to leave Netflix include Blue Beetle, Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance, Hulk, 8 Mile, Doctor Sleep, Hancock, Terminator 2, Elvis, Runaway Bride, both Sister Act movies and Mad Max: Fury Road.

Good News for Those Missing These Films

The good news is that as What's on Netflix notes, "All removals from Netflix are subject to change due to licensing agreements."

They add, "Netflix may extend licenses or remove titles earlier than listed. Removal dates may also vary by region." So, at any point the streaming service could bring these titles back, even early in the year. But, it's best to watch them now, just in case.

'Arctic Blast' Warning Issued Amid Record Cold in Midwest

A clipper system bring a fresh blast of cold arctic air has temperatures plunging below zero across part of the upper Midwest after the area was hit by record cold just last week.

The first in a series of clipper systems expected to move through the Midwest and Northeast will bring even more cold air and chances of snow throughout the week, according to the Weather Channel.

Midwest Hit by Record Cold Just Last Week

Earlier this week a number of states saw record cold with Aberdeen, South Dakota, tying its daily record low of minus 18 degrees. Just a day later, temperatures dropped below zero across Minnesota, South Dakota and Wisconsin with wind chills in the 20s below zero.

The record cold continued across the Great Lakes and Northeast as temperatures in Flint, MI dropped to minus-3 degrees - breaking a previous daily record of six degrees. Indiana, New Jersey, New York, Ohio and Vermont also saw records lows in several cities.

'Arctic Blast' Set to Bring More Cold to Midwest, Northeast

After surviving record cold temperatures, the Midwest and Northeast must now brace for an "arctic blast" set to bring low temperatures and a scattering of snowfall.

The Weather Channel revealed the forecast for Sunday: "A shot of cold air that started in parts of Montana, North Dakota and northern Minnesota Saturday will spread to the rest of Minnesota, western Wisconsin and northern Iowa. Here highs could only reach the single digits or the teens."

As the cold front continues to sweep south, cities like Philadelphia, New York and Boston will see their temperatures drop by as much as 10 degrees from Sunday to Monday.

"Their high temperatures may not make it much above freezing Monday or Tuesday afternoon. Breezy conditions along this stretch of I-95 and the coast will make temperatures feel even colder," the Weather Channel said.

Below-freezing temperatures are expected as far south as Baltimore or Washington D.C. as the Weather Channel warns of daily record lows being threatened across much of the Northeast.

Netflix Co-CEO Shared Brutal Truth Before Polarizing Warner Bros Decision

Earlier this week Netflix rocked the media world when it announced its acquisition of Warner Bros, including its film and television studios, HBO Max and HBO, for nearly $83 billion.

“Our mission has always been to entertain the world,” Ted Sarandos, co-CEO of Netflix, said in a statement this week. “By combining Warner Bros.’ incredible library of shows and movies—from timeless classics like Casablanca and Citizen Kane to modern favorites like Harry Potter and Friends—with our culture-defining titles like Stranger Things, KPop Demon Hunters and Squid Game, we'll be able to do that even better. Together, we can give audiences more of what they love and help define the next century of storytelling.”

Not long after the polarizing move, Sarandos' previous comment about the movie theater industry and global box office struggles resurfaced. In an April conversation with Variety, Sarandos offered revealed the brutal truth facing Hollywood.

“What does that say? What is the consumer trying to tell us? That they’d like to watchmovies at home, thank you. The studios and the theaters are duking it out over trying to preserve this 45-day window that is completely out of step with the consumer experience of just loving a movie," he shared.

Sarandos admitted Netflix's "bespoke releases" where some films hit theaters for a brief time are just to satisfy awards requirements.

“We have these bespoke releases … we have to do some qualification for the Oscars,” Sarandos said. “They have to run for a little bit, it helps with the press cycle a little bit. But I’ve tried to encourage every director we work with to focus on the consumer, focus on the fans. Make a movie that they love, and they will reward you.”

Netflix's deal with Warner Bros is facing mounting pressure as major names like director Christopher Nolan attempt to weigh in.

Inmates Run 26.2 Miles, Finding Purpose in Utah Prison’s First Marathon

At the Utah State Correctional Facility, a group of inmates recently accomplished something only about one percent of people ever will: a full marathon. What began as a small running club inside the facility has grown into a structured program that’s changing lives, improving moods, and even reducing violence. Now, they hope to make the marathon an annual November tradition.

The idea started with inmate Casey Vanderhoef, who was inspired after watching the documentary26.2 to Life, which follows three men serving life sentences as they train for a marathon. He pitched the concept of a run club to prison officials, and with support, the Fit From Within club was born.

Monthly runs and shorter races, including a half-marathon over the summer, led up to the marathon. For many of the men, running was completely new, but it's proven to be both cathartic and transformative. Vanderhoef says the program helped him through substance use recovery and improved his depression.

"Coming here literally saved my life," Vanderhoef previously told KSL. "I just started feeling better."

Another inmate, Fonua Kimoana, had always stuck to weightlifting since entering the facility in 2008. Running, he said, was something he had "just barely learned." But after helping form Fit From Within, he’s now committed to keeping it part of his life.

"Emotionally, it helps me think clearly, focus on what’s important, and put things in perspective," he told Fox 13 Salt Lake City.

The marathon drew support from therapists and recreation staff alike, who say the consistency of training has brought much-needed structure and stability to participants. Bear 2 unit leader Alfredo Lolani shared that the running club has helped reduce violence in the unit.

Research backs up those improvements, showing that physical activity programs in prisons can ease depression and anxiety while improving overall health.

A Strength Coach Swears by This Training for Building Peak Athleticism

For a long time, training meant picking a lane and sticking to it. You either chased strength or endurance, speed or size, and rarely both at once. Go too heavy in the weight room, and your lungs might hate you on a long run. Push endless miles, and your muscles might feel like wet noodles in the squat rack. Hybrid training is flipping that script. It’s about building muscle, boosting cardio, and sharpening agility simultaneously. You’re no longer forced to choose between power and endurance—you can have a bit of both.

"With this method, you can train individuals to improve their aerobic capacity while simultaneously improving maximum strength, increasing muscle mass, improving balance and agility, and more," says Alex Viada, NSCA Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist & author of The Ultimate Hybrid Athlete: A Definitive Guide to Achieving Peak Athleticism Across All Disciplines. "With more conventional training, one or more of these might be compromised, with poorly designed programs focusing on one or two areas at the expense of the others."

How to Balance Strength Training and Endurance Work

Balancing strength and endurance isn’t about going all out every session. It’s about smart recovery and intelligent training. You don’t need to lift heavy every day to build serious strength. Lower-volume routines that focus on key movements, lighter weights moved explosively, plyometrics, and dynamic-effort work can all improve functional power without wearing you down. The same goes for cardio. Dialing back pace, swapping long, grind-it-out sessions for intervals, and knowing when to push versus cruise helps you get fitter while avoiding burnout.

"It’s all about 'minimum effective dose plus one', and taking the time to understand (and work within) your capabilities," says Viada. "The body can recover from a lot, it just needs to be kept well fed, and needs to stay under that 'burnout' line in every respect."

Common Hybrid Training Mistakes

People usually make two mistakes with hybrid training. The first is stacking a standard running plan on top of a lifting program. Most plans assume you’re only doing one thing, so combining them without adjustments is a quick path to burnout. Smart hybrid programs trim the workouts to the essentials—fewer sets, slightly lower intensity, and only the most critical miles.

The second mistake is trying to mash running and lifting into a single “hybrid workout.” That rarely works. The strength of hybrid training comes from giving each discipline the focus it deserves. Keep runs and lifts separate, train each with intent, and you’ll get better at both.

Simon Cowell Has Telling Comments on Ryan Seacrest

Simon Cowell and Ryan Seacrest spent years working together on American Idol, where Cowell served as a judge from the inaugural season in 2002 until his eventual departure in 2010. However, it does not seem like that relationship has lasted.

During a recent interview, Cowell opened up a bit about his relationship with Seacrest as he made it clear that the two have not kept in touch and offered some telling comments on Seacrest's career and fame.

Cowell and Seacrest on 'American Idol'

Seacrest and Cowell's paths crossed for many years when Cowell served as a judge on American Idol while Seacrest served as the show's host.

Cowell was one of the most iconic figures on the show at the height of its popularity, but he eventually left the show, departing from the judges' panel in 2010. Seacrest, however, has remained.

Seacrest stayed on as the show's host after Cowell's departure and returned when the series was revived in 2018. He will also be back on the show alongside judges Luke Bryan, Lionel Richie, and Carrie Underwood when the show's 24th season premieres in January.

Cowell and Seacrest 'Rarely Talk'

Though Cowell and Seacrest worked together for nearly a decade, Cowell admitted during a recent interview that they do not really keep in touch, nor does he really follow what Seacrest has been doing in his career.

“I don’t follow his career if I’m being honest with you,” Simon told the New York Times in an interview published Nov. 29. “So, I don’t know what he’s done or doing. We rarely talk now, if I’m being honest with you.”

It's obviously been about 15 years since the two of them have worked closely together.

Cowell Talks Seacrest's Fame

In addition to the admission that he and Seacrest no longer keep in touch, Cowell opened up a little bit about Seacrest's rise to fame, offering some telling comments about just how focused the Idol host was on becoming famous.

“He does work hard,” Simon said. “I don’t know, actually. He was very, very ambitious. I always knew with Ryan. He was very steely about his career, wanting to be famous. I mean this massive, massive desire about being very famous.”

Of course, Seacrest has arrived at that fame, hosting many high-profile shows and events over the years. In addition to American Idol, Seacrest has hosted E! News, Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve, Live with Kelly and Ryan, and currently serves as the host of Wheel of Fortune.

Based on his work ethic and how he carried himself, it sounds like none of that success is surprising to Cowell.

Running Is Officially the Sport of the Year and Gen Z Is Leading the Charge, Strava Reports

Let’s be honest, fitness has gone fully mainstream. Everywhere you look, someone’s signing up for their first 5K, trying to beat their time in another half-marathon, or showing up to their first run club in a hydration vest and brand-new HOKAs like it’s some kind of athleisure runway. Honestly, when they’re mid-stride, it kind of is.

Salomon XT-6s are going viral, hydration gels are being tossed around like party favors, and according to Strava’s Year in Sport Trend Report, running has officially claimed the crown as this year’s biggest fitness obsession. Here’s a closer look at the biggest trends, surprising stats, and what they reveal about where fitness is headed this year.

Gen Z Is Crushing the Running Game

If you've ever heard that Gen Z is the “laziest generation,” it’s time to reconsider. Those born between 1997 and 2012, currently 13 to 28 years old, are crushing the running scene. In 2025 alone, Gen Zers made up 38 percent of 5K participants, 39 percent of 10K runners, 31 percent of half-marathoners, and 33 percent of full marathoners. Their biggest motivator? Staying committed to a race they already signed up for (75 percent say it’s what keeps them hitting the pavement).

Gen Z Is Pumping Iron

Gen Z isn’t just leading the pack in running—they’re making serious gains in the weight room too. Members of this generation are twice as likely as older groups to say lifting is their main sport. With regular social media use( Gen Z makes up 27 percent of all users), it’s no surprise that many are training with aesthetics in mind. What is surprising is that while women in this age group are 21 percent more likely to record their lifts on Strava, they’re also 38 percent more likely to fear getting “bulky,” a myth we all wish would finally die.

Strava Is the New Social Flex

While the last decade was all about hearting dog photos, deadlift PRs, and wedding pics, Strava is flipping the script. Instead of endlessly scrolling, people are using the app’s “kudos” feature to celebrate others’ wins and give a virtual high-five that actually sticks. It is working in real life, too. Fifty percent of Gen Z say they plan to use Strava even more in 2026, leaving less time for doomscrolling on TikTok or Instagram. Not to mention, Strava reports that for every two minutes spent on the app, users spend an hour being active. That is a trade-off we can get behind.

Fitness Is the New Social Scene

Running, especially through run clubs, has become one of the best ways to meet people in real life. While gym rats and seasoned runners have always known that workouts are great for making friends or even finding a significant other, this trend has only grown. With more people turning to fitness for social connection, 39 percent of Gen Z and Gen X say it’s one of their top ways to meet like-minded people. Beyond friendship, one in five Gen Z users reported going on a date with someone they met through exercise. If you needed a reason to put down the dating apps and lace up your running shoes, this is it.

Is 'Avatar: Fire and Ash' Good? Read the First Critic Reactions

It's almost time to return to Pandora. The first press screenings of Avatar: Fire and Ash were held on Monday night, and with them came the first reactions to the highly anticipated third film in director James Cameron's blockbuster sci-fi series.

Avatar: Fire and Ash opens in theaters on December 19, and although some critics and members of the press have already seen it, it will still be a few days before any proper, in-depth reviews are out. Those who have seen the movie are able to offer brief reactions or thoughts about it on social media, and the early takeaway seems to be that Fire and Ash is a spectacle, albeit one that maybe repeats some of the beats of the last movie, 2022's The Way of Water

Initial Reactions Offer Praise, Some Criticism

The movie, which once more stars Sam Worthington as Jake Sully, a human marine who becomes a leader to the native Na'vi people, dealing with the tragic fallout of The Way of Water. Meanwhile, a violent tribe of Na'vi led by a fire-worshipping chieftess (Oona Chaplin), join forces with Stephen Lang's Colonel Miles Quaritch.

'First Reactions' to Movies Should Be Taken With a Grain of Salt

The initial response to Avatar: Fire and Ash seems like a pretty fair, albeit early, assessment of the movie. This writer saw Fire and Ash last night and very much enjoyed the film while conceding that some of the critics who found certain set-pieces or story beats to be repetitive had some valid points.

To go behind the scenes of the entertainment industry, it's generally a good idea to be wary of social media reactions. Typically, when a film studio lets people see a movie ahead of the premiere date, they have to agree to an embargo. Full reviews—in-depth essays where people can make a full critical argument—tend to be held until closer to the movie's actual release date. In Fire and Ash's case, it won't be until December 16, just three days before the premiere, when outlets will be able to publish their full reviews.

Social media reactions, meanwhile, tend to have a much shorter embargo. For Fire and Ash, people were allowed to post about it pretty much as soon as the movie was over on Monday night. Typically, social media reactions are very positive, and it's a good idea to wait for a critic's full analysis before betting too much on initial reactions.

However, the initial consensus appears to be that Avatar: Fire and Ash is a thrilling time at the movies. That Fire and Ash's early social media takeaways are largely positive, with some quibbles, should give a decent idea of what to expect when the movie comes out.
