College Football Quarterbacks: 9 New QBs to Watch in 2022

College football is a quarterback’s game now. The days of Alabama regularly winning titles with interchangeable warm bodies at QB are over. Most of the national championship winners in the sport’s Playoff era have climbed to the mountaintop with a future high-round NFL draftee throwing passes out of the shotgun. A stellar college football quarterback isn’t necessarily a requirement for success, but recent history tells us that to win big prizes, a team needs either a brilliant downfield passer or (like 2021 national champ Georgia) a superb defense.

The top national contenders entering 2022 all have strong QB ability. In the preseason AP Top 25, No. 1 Alabama brings back Heisman Trophy winner Bryce Young. No. 2 Ohio State has the excellent C.J. Stroud. No. 3 Georgia has Stetson Bennett, who isn’t on the same level as Young or Stroud but played well during Georgia’s title run. No. 4 Clemson has D.J. Uiagalelei, a former No. 1 recruit who had a miserable 2021 but will at least start the season under center for the Tigers.

There’s plenty of turnover in the college football quarterback ranks, too. Here are the other new passers slated to start at top-25 teams this fall—and their relative chances of success.
