Common Symptoms Of Tonsillitis
Did you ever suffer from tonsillitis? Tonsillitis is a very common childhood health issue. However, adults can also suffer from it. As you must be aware, tonsillitis can lead to swelling of lymph nodes because of inflammation of the tonsils. Now, how will you find out whether you actually have tonsillitis and when you need to visit the doctor for medical treatment?
Here are a few common symptoms of tonsillitis that will be of help
1) Throat pain
A tell-tale symptom of tonsillitis, throat pain is caused due to the inflammation of tonsils that are present in the throat region. You might even have throat pain clubbed with ear and neck pain because both the ear and neck and located very close to each other. So, if you have throat pain, don’t just ignore it. It can be due to tonsillitis.
2) Difficulty in swallowing
A sore throat can make swallowing food pretty difficult. It becomes a huge problem for little children. So, if your child isn’t eating anything at all, or is finding it difficult to swallow food, you must do something about it. Difficulty in swallowing along with fever and throat pain is one of the main symptoms of tonsillitis. You must consult the doctor and get it treated.
3) Fever
You get fever when there is an inflammation in the body. That is why one symptom of tonsillitis is a rise in body temperature. So, if you are suffering from fever which is between 100 and 102 degree Celsius that does not seem to come down even after consuming a paracetamol, it is a reason to worry. If you also have throat pain for more than one or two days, then you must consult your doctor.
4) Headache
Tonsillitis can also lead to headaches because of fever. The other cause of headaches is lack of energy due to long gaps between meals. It can make your headache worse. However, if your headache is clubbed with throat pain, it can be because of swollen tonsils. You need to get medical help to bring down your discomfort.
5) Cough
Throat pain and fever are common symptoms of tonsillitis and in certain cases there may also be cough. The reason to have cough along with the other symptoms of tonsillitis is that the inflammation can spread to the lungs. So, you need to consult your doctor if you have swollen tonsils, a bad throat and cough.

Dental health is important. At some point of time or the other, we all think about eating foods that help in improving oral health.
Here are some principles of healthy dental nutrition:
1) Add in some crunch
You exercise regularly to develop healthy bones and strong muscles all over your body. You must do the same for the jaw too. Now, the jaw cannot work out at the gym; chewing is the only way it can be kept strong. Sticking to processed of refined stuff will deprive your jaw of the much needed exercise. Focus on eating fibre rich foods such as raw veggies, whole seeds and nuts for oral health.
2) Give nutrients to your mouth
To function right, your body needs fat-soluble vitamins. Vitamin D is one nutrient that you need to maintain good health. Apart from being good for health, it helps enhance digestion, immunity and brain function. The human body is programmed to synthesize this vitamin from the sun. It can also be obtained from cheese, egg yolks, fatty fish and liver.
3) Balance the microbiome
For the body to function right, the microbiomes in the mouth and gut require the right balance of friendly bcateria and bad bacteria. When you head for your next meal, keep in mind that you are feeding trillions of little fellows (microbes) residing inside you. To ensure that they are happy, you need to eat foods that contain probiotics. Eat foods that have probiotics in them by nature. You also need to consume prebiotics, which refer to foods for the friendly bacteria in your gut. Include garlic and onions in your diet for that.
There are other little (but important) things you have to be careful about,
- Brush two times a day and don’t forget to floss. Change your toothbrush 3 to 4 times a year.
- Rinse your mouth with an antibacterial mouth wash to prevent teeth and gum related problems.
- Say no to tobacco! Tobacco stains teeth and you should refrain from smoking and chewing tobacco altogether.
- Avoid sugar loaded foods. Bacteria present in the mouth break down simple sugars and that can erode the enamel of the tooth. Sugary beverages like soft drinks and fruit drinks are riskier as you sip them. Carbonated beverages are even worse as they increase acidity levels. Stay away from sticky candies too!
- Limit consumption of coffee and alcohol too as they do no good for the teeth.
- Clean the surface of the tongue regularly as it helps removing bacteria and thereby improving your dental health.
Now, don’t think that good oral health is needed to prevent trips to the dentist. There is a lot more associated with oral health. Tooth problems can cause diabetes, heart problems and even inability to speak or eat! Some maladies can be life threatening. Having crooked teeth can cause gum diseases and lead to loss of teeth.
So, you must be careful with your teeth and gums as you really need to take care of your oral health.

In the recent times, there has been an upsurge in the use of silicones. They look bright, colourful and pretty. Plus, they have been marketed as safer alternatives to plastics. Right from storage containers to baby bottle nipples, you can find them everywhere. Baking world also uses them as they are claimed to be best suited for the high temperatures involved. The same goes for ice cube trays to be placed in the freezer. So, it is kind of in both extremes. Let us find out whether they are safe! But before that, let us know a little more about where else you find them the most and what they are!

What are silicones?
Silicones are a hybrid between synthetic plastic polymers and synthetic rubbers. They have properties similar to plastic. Being easy to clean, non-staining and nonstick, they are great for cookware! However, not rendered completely safe.
People feel that silicones are natural but it is not so. Just like most plastic polymers, silicones are synthetic by nature. The raw material used to make silicone resins is silica.
Can silicones be toxic?
Now, this is what is actually bothering many! And there is no clear answer. They are said to be relatively safe as they are stable at high temperatures and are resistant to chemicals. Experts say that silicones are safe for food and drink. It is believed to be a safer bet than nonstick cookware.

5 Key Strategies to Stick to Your New Year’s Resolutions
All too often guys make New Year’s resolutions, stick to them for a month, don’t see results, and quit. It’s the phenomenon behind the “January rush”—and the reason most gyms are back to their usual crowd by mid-March.
But you don’t have to be one of those average guys who abandons a fitness plan once you lose your initial momentum. We talked to New York City-based trainer and strength coach Nick Ebner, C.P.T., to tell us how to stay motivated and achieve results for life. Here are five common questions with responses from Ebner below.
What’s the key to staying motivated after the January rush?
Don’t just show up at the gym and say, “I want to get in shape.” No plan usually equals no results. You also shouldn’t peg your goals to something physique-related, like “I want six-pack abs” or “I want to burn my love handles.”
I suggest having a definitive performance goal, or several. Make it measurable, like “go to the gym three times a week,” or “make sure to exercise for 180 minutes total in a week.” Depending on where you’re starting from, you may need to change nutrition, sleep, and other lifestyle habits in order to reach these goals, but you’ll need a strategy.
How long does it take to really see results from an exercise program?
This depends on the individual. The three factors I find play the largest role in seeing results are the trainee’s age, past exercise/training history, and consistency. If you’re a young former athlete and are training 3-5 times per week, results may show in 2-4 weeks. Also, if you’re younger and a new trainee, results also often come quickly.
But if you’re 45, you’ve never worked out, and you’ve eaten poorly for the last 20 years, results will probably take much longer. Fortunately, with consistency, results will come more quickly.
What’s an easy way to show myself that I’m making progress?
If your goals are body composition, have someone do a BioSignature Assessment, which is a very accurate 12-point body fat and hormonal assessment, every 4-6 weeks. If your goals are performance-based, keep an exercise journal or program log to see if what you’re doing is working.
How can I ‘cheat’ on my diet and still look better than I did last year?
Set a realistic goal on how clean you think you can get your diet versus how much you want to cheat. After 4-8 weeks, if you’re not seeing the changes you want, you’ll have to skew the ratio toward the cleaner side. Make little changes until you see the results you’re looking for and set deadlines to assess if what you’re doing is working. For most people, little changes stick better than massive changes.
How can I make a shorter workout more effective?
Frequency, food, and sleep! You can train for shorter increments per workout if you show up more often. You can train less and see body composition changes if you feed your body the fuel it needs. Your body changes when you sleep, too, so if you’re sleeping fewer than 7-9 hours each night, you probably won’t make optimal gains.
Use any or all of these tactics if you don’t want to spend as much time in the gym. You can absolutely get better results in half the time.

Smartphones have been ruling our lives for more than a decade now. Everybody walks on the streets with their head bent over the phone. People visit restaurants just to click pics and post them on Instagram! Socializing has now acquired a new meaning; you can be close to a person through WhatsApp but in real life you might not even be able to start a conversation! No, I am not cribbing about technology here! Smartphones have both pros and cons.

The issue is not with smartphones but with how we connect to them. Here are some healthy smartphone habits that will be of help!
1) Change your phone routines
Certain changes like keeping the phone away from your bedroom or using it less often can become a habit and that too healthy ones. Now think when you check your phone for the first time in the day or where you keep it in office. Ask yourself for what purposes do you use your smartphone. What kind of apps help in simplifying your life and which ones are making your life miserable?
2) Mind your P’s and Q’s
What do you do with your phone when you socialize with people (I mean the real socializing!), watch TV or a movie? How do you interact with your phone when you have a meal or while driving? Find out what you do and think whether it is justified to do so. Build good phone etiquettes.
3) Give yourself time to enjoy using the phone
Just like how cheat meals work in dieting, giving yourself some time to scroll through the phone happily for a limited period of time in a day will help. It will ensure that you don’t binge on your phone later. However, ensure that the half an hour you have allotted does not turn out to be 3 hours!
4) Take a break from using your phone
Taking a break from your smartphone can be for a day, for a single meal or for a few hours. You can start by carrying out a phone fast for an hour. Maintain a diary and write down when and how long you are going to carry out your phone fast. This way you will be able to honour your commitment better.
5) Have a life beyond the phone
Take your diary out and list down what all activities make you happy that are not related to your smartphone. Also write down how you will incorporate those activities in your life on a regular basis.
For example, you may write – I love to play the piano. Hence, I would take piano lessons and allot time to play it every weekend.
6) Mastering stillness
Life should have a pause button. You need to be still and silent at times and let your mind relax. So, the next time you go ahead and try to pick your smartphone, use that time to pause and enjoy stillness instead.
7) Bring back attention
It is high time that you work towards bringing back your lost attention spans. For that you need to carry out both physical and mental exercises. Practice attention-building exercises to keep your brain in shape.
It is a must to break the addiction of the smartphone and hence the above habits need to be inculcated.
