Sony’s $100 PlayStation Classic Launches This December—and It’s a Flashback to the ’90s

Throwback game consoles have been trending lately, and Sony is joining the crowd by announcing the launch of its PlayStation Classic console this December. Based on the original PlayStation, which was released almost 25 years ago, the new system features the same retro styling, buttons, and controllers you’re familiar with, and it comes with 20 classic games that’ll take you back to the ’90s. And if you’re trying to stick to a budget, good news: It’ll only cost you $100, and it’s set to go on sale on December 3. In other words, you might’ve just found the perfect stocking stuffer.

The original PlayStation was the first console in history to reach 100 million units shipped worldwide, and it was the first to bring real-time 3D graphics into homes around the globe. It also featured legendary titles like Final Fantasy VII, Tekken 3, and Wild Arms, all of which are included on the Classic. Although it’s more expensive than rival re-releases like the Nintendo NES Classic Edition, the Playstation Classic comes with two controllers for multiplayer gaming right out of the box—perfect if you want to bring a friend along on your nostalgia trip.

And if nostalgia is what you’re looking for, there’s definitely plenty of it with the Classic. While it’s about half the size of the original PlayStation, it retains the same styling and exterior buttons, the controllers are replicas of the originals, and all the games are playable in their original formats. If you buy one, it will also ship with an HDMI cable so you can simply hook it up to your TV and a USB cable to power it up.
